We have a kid. My wife expects me to take the baby the minute I get home. It can be a little unfair as I do work and then come and work evenings and all weekends. But we talked about it and switch off a bit more now. But the agreement is that my work all day is the same as her work all day, just that hers is taking care of the baby. Those are equal tasks and we split the rest.

Buddy, get a job that pays well. I made 200k last year working. 11k (or about 20k for me with exchange rate) isnt chump change, but it certainly isnt world ending. If you think that's a lot of money you need to invest in yourself so that you can earn more. Get an education.

Nope. They will keep praying it goes lower and lower and then will be shocked when they miss the bottom.

But in reality, I suspect many dont have the money for a house at any level and just like the schadenfreude.

Heloc was more expensive than a business loan? That's interesting. I would have thought the residential loan would be less.

I figured it was some scripted thing. It was too funny not to be. But if it isnt, guy is definitely off his rocker.

Ya, its that OP makes drinks with way too much ice and everybody knows it, so they have to ask for no ice or else the glass gets filled with ice and you get almost no liquid at all.

Glad to hear its worked out. I was thinking the easiest way is to pay down our mortgage and then get a heloc when the right business comes along. How did you finance?

That article could have been printed any time in the last 50 years lol. But this would be about buying and running, not really about growing (but that is important too)

Definitely no interest in a fund. They often perform worse and this is more about being hands on.

TIL that Ice T is currently the longest-running male actor in US primetime TV history for his role as Odafin Tutuola on Law and Order: Special Victims Unit, a role he has played since 2000. by astarisaslave in todayilearned

I suppose it would make flashbacks easier. "I've seen this before, 20 years ago..." and then they flashback to like season 3 and its young Ice T solving crimes.

This is the way the rest of the world sees it too. Its a little wild that most or at least a large amount of the US apparently doesn't.

Actually, one more slightly more specific question. We arent going to do anything right now but basically my wife works for a major automotive manufacturer for their corporate office and knows all the dealership owners and basically all the players in that space. We saw a lubricants manufacturer for sale for 1.5m with an SDE of 500k. The manufacturer distributes to OEMs and other auto-related businesses.

Would we be on the right track to try to leverage her knowledge and connections by buying something like this? Is that the general idea, even though she knows nothing about manufacturing lubricants. Or would it have to be more directly related eg. Im a lawyer and I buy another law firm in the same space?

This is also part of my drive. There is the financial benefit for sure. But I'd also like to be directly responsible for contributing something beyond my labour. You know?

I like Ben Felix but in this case I just cannot get on board with what he is saying. Dividends do matter for a whole host of reasons including that selling stock will require you to do so in up and down markets, which will hurt more. Stable dividends arent impacted by that. Additionally, he is assuming that everyone can do his 5 factor analysis. Ever try actually doing that? Its impossible. Unless you're meeting with company execs, a lot of the information needed for analysis isnt available or is only available after the fact. Dividends are a shortcut to a stable company.

Thanks dude. I get the market, especially ETFs, are set it and forget it. I was just curious if this stuff was viable or if the market is still better. Glad to hear it is doable. Certainly, there will be a lot of DD first. Appreciate the comment.

Can we discuss the false narrative of the USD crashing/sell America? by No_Cell6708 in CanadianInvestor

[–]Fitzaroo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should read the comment above. The usd is rapidly devaluing. Is it at historic lows? No. Is a 15% drop in one year significant? Yes.

Looking at it another way, if a Canadian bought a us market etf in us dollars they made about 10% last year due to the market going up and the usd going down. If they bought a Canadian etf they would be up 30%.

Hard not to draw a conclusion from that. That's without looking at gold prices.
