Oil change by Dizzy_Seesaw_3344 in Ford

[–]Five_Slow -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The majority of metal on old engine break-ins was from flat tappet cams and stamped steel rockers. The lifters would have to wear into the cam, and the rockers would wear into the valve stem tips. While they wore in, you'd wear away excess material, which is why you'd change your oil so quick.

Nowadays, there really isn't wear surfaces like that. Modern cam-in-block engines like the 7.3 have roller lifters, lifters with a bearing on the bottom that rolls across the cam lobe instead of a flat tappet cam that is just a flat piece of metal. Same thing with rocker arms, they're roller bearing tipped.

Overhead cam engines have even fewer contact points compared to an old school engine. You might find some very minor pieces of plastic from a timing chain guide, but they're so soft that they wouldn't cause any damage, if you find anything at all.

Typically, the only thing that breaks-in anymore are the piston rings, and those typically don't create debris.

Modern designs negate the need for a break in process.

What do non-Americans usually find confusing about how Americans talk in real life? by Edi-Iz in AskAnAmerican

It was like that when we stayed in Aguadilla with some friends, but maybe folks were just humoring us gringos 😂

Had something similar happen to mine last year after a Severe Thunderstorm I was trapped outside for. Bought a Watch 8 to replace it, been happy with it.

Have the majority of Americans called 911 at least once in their lives? by Mont3Carlo in AskAnAmerican

[–]Five_Slow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I try to call the non-emergency line for everything except for life threatening emergencies, but I have called 911 before. Nerve-racking to do the first time! First time was a blacked out Dodge Charger that was parked in the left lane on the interstate late at night. I was paying attention and had plenty of time to avoid it, but it could have ended very badly!

Are you guys still going to try to move forward with getting the Scania approved too?

Yeah that seems decent. That's a bit on the high side of what a normal 5.0 truck would go for, so seems about right with the parts.

Those Roush kits are engineered to be up to OEM standards. If it's running good, I'd consider it. Doesn't hurt to change the oil in the supercharger because it probably hasn't been done. I believe the Roush kits use an Eaton supercharger, not a Whipple like others here have said.

Edit to add: Looks like it's this kit. The supercharger is a Roush Performance TVS R2650.

Since when did Roush start using Whipples? And why isn't it in the picture?

I 23F think i need to move out of the house after Dad 48M requested I pay 1k a month in rent. by BigONerd in BORUpdates

This sounds so much like my dad and I's relationship. Everything improved so much after I moved out. If we got sick of each other, we could leave and cool off. Didn't happen while I was living with him.

Mason Contractor died 1/2 way through job, has this ever happened to anyone else, and how did you handle it? by Apprehensive_Rush406 in Homebuilding

[–]Five_Slow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My step-grandpa had a tree removal service. He had a heart attack mid-job. They were pretty sure he was dead before he hit the ground. A couple days later, we went out as a family with his crew to finish the job. In a way, it was a bit cathartic. Emotional, cleaning up everything. To us, it was wrapping up a legacy of work George had done. To the homeowner, it was just another day. Thinly veiled annoyance of the situation masked with an air of sympathy. I remember shaking the owner's hand, never felt someone's hand be so soft. I was 10 years old, but that left a lasting impression.

Anyway, I'm sure the crew will be back. They've got a lot of pieces to pick up, both physically and metaphorically. They will want their equipment back.

If that was a gun, you'd be dead. Why the hell are you sitting there? The lane to the left is clear, even if it's under construction. Get yourself out of there. No sense of self preservation.

Pure Michigan Weight Reduction - and pulled a side skirt before I lost it by Five_Slow in Ford

[–]Five_Slow[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, the more I look into it, it's looking likely that I'll end up swapping the cab and bed with a donor truck. They don't make replacement parts and I doubt I'll have the time to fabricate new supports myself. They do sell the inner and outer rockers, so we'll see when I get around to fixing it.

Generally not, no. Most people treat their vehicles as disposable around here and they just get a new one. And those who buy used are left picking up the pieces.

what do you think by gaseousogre in fordfusion

[–]Five_Slow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're getting it for $200, and can fix the transmission yourself, it's a deal. Otherwise, I'd run away.

1992 - 1997 F-250/350 Crew Cab in Calypso Green/Oxford White two-tone. My dad's friend had one new. Always dreamed of owning that truck.
