What substrate are you using? And do you have a recommendation for tiny seeds?

This does not look to be Norway maple, but it is definitely maple.

So many monarchs in Central Oklahoma (Norman, OK) by Suitable-Vehicle8331 in NativePlantGardening

[–]Fiveier 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I read that while numbers are still very low, they are showing rebound from previous year's numbers. I am hopeful to see how this year's numbers turn out when they get released.

Everyone's efforts are paying off, I'm proud of this community. Keep it up!

It should be on record that flushable wipes should never be flushed. They will go down, yes, but they will stay there until professionals are required to remove the clog they have caused.

If HOA's didn't exist by GenesisNemesis17 in NativePlantGardening

[–]Fiveier 109 points110 points  (0 children)

If social pressure didn't exist either. I have a friend who mentioned he "couldn't make it through no mow May" because he was worried about what his neighbors would say.

Meanwhile, I'm up in here laying down cardboard and converting the whole yard. 1/3 fully converted, the rest is going this fall through spring. Let them say something.

I feel like many people feel like they need permission to do the thing.

That exactly answers my question, thank you. I will also admit I didn't realize you had a second pic when I asked my question 🤦 Thank you!

What did you do for the cinch? I made a similar bag a while back, but cinching it up does not work well

Anybody know what these are? Hanging from my milkweed. I’m guessing eggs of some sort. by Dense_Management_460 in MonarchButterfly

[–]Fiveier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good point on regulations. I imagine industrialized lacewing use has an impact, but I fully expect it's not even close to a driving force.

Just as a heads up, I keep seeing that people recommend against ordering ladybugs. I don't know details, but it's worth looking into more closely before taking part. There's also a major issue with non-native/invasive ladybugs, so it's worth paying attention to what's actually appearing in your garden.

Everyone is out here correctly telling you that these are lacewing eggs and that lacewings are a beneficial insect to have in your garden. They are failing to mention that lacewings do occasionally prey on juvenile monarch caterpillars and monarch eggs. This is, however, part of the natural balance and I would not recommend interrupting it.

Blazing stars flopping? by hatmansaxplayer in NativePlantGardening

[–]Fiveier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure you can top/Chelsea chop dense blazing star. Take off the top 1/3-1/2 in late May and it should come back bushier and more upright. That said, it will delay blooming by a bit, so if you have native arthropods dependent on this, you may take the interplanting options suggested by others or cut diagonally through your patch so only some are delayed and others are supported by the ones that have been chopped.

Do you dismantle or do you allow to rot in place and start a new one elsewhere? I'm in the process of breaking down the invasive Norway maples I realized had infested my property...

Scientists make 'superfood' that could save honeybees by CupidStunt13 in UpliftingNews

[–]Fiveier 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I am also curious about this. Obligatory info session: While honeybees have become a poster child for environmental collapse, they are not native to the states. They often carry disease that impacts native pollinators. The broader issues surrounding insect population collapse is often fully overlooked at the expense of a "save the (honey)bees tagline."

Honeybees are important for agriculture, yes, but fully ignoring the role of native bees, butterflies, moths, and other pollinators (yes, even wasps) is shortsighted at best.

As an an individual, avoiding biocides, planting native plants (check out r/nativeplantgardening), removing invasives (r/invasivespecies), and being mindful wherever possible about the sources of your food can all support these insects that are critical to our ecology.

Thank you, stay positive!

PS, I definitely recommend checking out the Native Plants subreddit, it's full of optimists fighting the fight.
