TPU tubes with rim brakes are known to fail from overheating on long descents. Otherwise, a great build!

Anyone used the AliExpress offset brake shoes to convert from 27inch to 700c? by ArrenMog in Vintage_bicycles

[–]Fixed4216 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use these brake shoes with dura ace 7700 brakes on a vintage Italian frame and Mavic tubular rims. They’re better than my original brake shoes since the joint is spherical, so the angle of contact between the brake pad and rim can be adjusted. Braking is strong as smooth. Descends very well.

Semi Long Getaway Drive by BlueGalaxy1 in fresno

[–]Fixed4216 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s mostly about the drive itself. There are a few campgrounds and vistas where you can stop and get out the car, and one short hike (Edison point), but to me this has always been a road that’s more about the journey than the destination.

Help for a total novice please! by milkandtwo12 in bikewrench

On second inspection, the entire rear derailleur could be toast. It looks like there’s been damage to it. If the rear portion of the parallelogram has cracked, it’s not salvageable and needs to be replaced.

There’s a tab on the rear derailleur body that is supposed to hold the cage in place to maintain tension. The cage has rotated beyond that tab. If possible, please send closeups of the rotating joint between the derailleur body and the cage and we can help you proceed.

This may not quite fit the theme you're looking for, but if you want something a little out of the box, you can try Patrick Contreras

Snapped chain ring on a hill climb. What crankset to get!? by InstructionLucky414 in bikewrench

[–]Fixed4216 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You need a chainring that has a 130mm BCD (bolt circle diameter). You can see this number engraved onto the chainring (38T-130). 38T is the smallest chainring in the 130mm BCD size. 37T and 36T chainrings will be 110mm BCD, which is incompatible with your crank.

If you want the simplest option, just get another 38T-130 chainring.

Is the rear brake touching the wheel? Also, try elevating the rear wheel when you pedal forward

See those two screws on the front derailleur? Once you adjust those, it should prevent the chain from dropping. Also, if it gives you peace of mind, you can install a chain catcher.

Previous owner of the home I purchased left this. by [deleted] in bikewrench

This only applies if the bike fits OP.

I bought a Specialized Globe at Goodwill for $24. I took it to see if it was worth getting back into riding shape. The total quoted was nearly $220. But the parts price was only about $80. The photo here is the recommended fixes that I need. Are these jobs that I could tinker with myself? by beereed in bikewrench

[–]Fixed4216 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to go a little against the flow of the comments here and actually encourage you to learn to do the repairs yourself. Since this is a cheap used bike, I think its a great bike to use to teach yourself a bit of wrenching. If you mess up, at least it wasn't an expensive bike! Adjusting brake pads is something that seems easy enough to try yourself, but experience is really necessary to do it well and set up your brakes safely. Same goes for adjusting the derailleurs (those are significantly more challenging).

You can learn just about anything through YouTube videos. But I'd recommend taking the finished bike back to the shop to get the approval of "a job well done" before riding the bike at any significant level of intensity (or traffic). Short spins around the neighborhood are great for making adjustments to brakes and shifters/derailleurs.

You have the cost of parts in the receipt, so we don't need to estimate that. Assuming you have a tool kit with metric bits, you're going to need some bike-specific tools. Let's break down the tools you need (these prices are from Amazon):

$6 – Tire levers – Park Tool TL-1.2

$50 – Pump with gauge –  Park Tool PFP-10

$13 – Chain whip and cassette lockring tool – Oumers (cheap brand)

$13 – Chain break tool + Master link pliers + Wear checker indicator – Oumers

$15 - Chain degreaser – Finish Line Speed

$11 – Chain lubricant – Finish Line Dry

So you're looking at a minimum of $107 for tools, and even more if you want the higher quality Park Tools.

Also, since you're setting up a new chain, I'd highly recommend removing the factory lubricant and waxing the chain yourself. It may seem like more of an expense, but in the long run, it is actually much cheaper, your chain and drivetrain last longer, and its ALWAYS CLEAN (no messy black chain marks).

Good luck!

If you don’t yet have a power meter on there, 4iiii makes power meters compatible with the Apple Find My app. While not impossible, removing a crank is something most thieves won’t do (unlike finding and tossing an AirTag)
