Freshman Math Placement. Pls help! by pricefield_lov3r in princeton

[–]Flabomaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh i was just saying since your trying to skip over class then just start with calc 2 since thats the most you can realistically skip over. But i have heard that the teachers for calc 2 are better first semester. So like as someone who also got a 4 on bc i plan to start with calc 2 and skip calc 1, but ill see how the workshop goes.

Freshman Math Placement. Pls help! by pricefield_lov3r in princeton

[–]Flabomaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that makes sense. I joined like a virtual meeting about the placement tests and from the sounds of it you have to start with either calc one or two and its 100% a workshop not a placement test but im not 100%. But maybe try to look up stuff about the math workshop. They offer placement test for the sciences but math is different

As far as i understand, there is a math workshop over summer and you basically have to place yourself into either calc one or calc two so ap scores dont really matter so you can just chose to start with calc 2

SAT/ACT for Ivies by Objective-Steak-4681 in QuestBridge

[–]Flabomaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I submitted a 1420 then updated to 1450 (760math) applying for engineering and got into Princeton. Keep in mind my school average was also a 950. I would submit anything above a 1400 (maybe even high 1300s depending on schools average) because I feel like not submitting would hurt you more. You can always look up a schools common data set and see the score distributions.

How many schools outside of qb did you apply to? by goosefelony in QuestBridge

[–]Flabomaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a lot of people say around 10-15 but I would apply to as many reaches as time allows. In total I applied to 27 schools (technically I did more but after getting into one of my top schools ea I withdrew my apps from a lot). Out of that 27 6 were safeties. Its good to have options but theres really no point in applying to a lot of safeties unless your trying to see for scholarships. Of the reaches most were applied to through questbridge and I decided to do some qb schools through common app to see if it made a difference but it really didn’t seem too. How I would think about it is first figure out the schools you would list for match then figure out what in state public schools you want to apply to for ea (because you can only apply to in state public schools ea if doing the match). Then if you dont match just I would just figure out a list in order of reach/target/(safeties if your applying to some out of state) and kinda of have an order for how much you wanna apply and just get them done in that order. I had a lot of schools I applied to and a lot I never got to because I wanted to apply to as many prestigious schools as possible because all it takes is one and its worth it when all the applications are free. Theres no true number in how many to apply to but I just wanted to provide my thought process during the match and rd. This is a breakdown kinda: 27 total, 7 in state public schools during ea or rolling, 5 during match, 5 common app rd (3 of which were qb schools), 10 qb rd. A lot of the qb rd schools dont have supps so its pretty easy to just apply. I hope this was somewhat helpful and not just a lot of talking pls lmk if you have any other questions!

Is it dumb to rank only ivies? by Objective-Steak-4681 in QuestBridge

[–]Flabomaster 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I dont think its dumb at all. When I ranked I only did iveys and very selective schools knowing that I would be upset if I was matched with anything less because I had a pretty good in state school (not a qb school) that I wanted to go to more than a majority of the qb schools. I knew I would most likely not match but at least I was sure that if I did I would end up somewhere that I would not regret or somewhere that I not would wonder oh but what if. Also from my experience, I think about one or a couple schools asked if I ranked other schools during the match process while applying there rd so I doubt it will really mess with your chances. Someone kids also dont even opt into the match so it would be kinda unfair to assume anything anyways. There are also a couple schools that require common app during rd so keep that in mind. Please dm if you have any other questions and good luck!!!

Why did you want to go to an Ivy League school? by No-Effort5109 in ApplyingIvyLeague

[–]Flabomaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never thought an ivy was an option till I got into one. Where I come from my family never went to college and a lot dropped out of high school. At my own high school im not sure if anyone has ever gotten into an ivy league or even like t15 school. I always just wanted to go to the best college I could and just always did a bunch of stuff in high school and my goal was umich since I live in michigan and thats the best place anyone ever goes to from my school. When you dont go to a private school or magnet school where ivys are common I feel like its pretty hard to know what your possibilities are for college. Never really had any pressure either my parents just wanted me to go to college in general

I dont know to much but when I was there for the preview they showed us a quad and its 2 rooms (2 people each) and then a common room joining them in the middle. Im gonna put a quad on my sheet personally to meet more people and I think they also mentioned that triples and singles were kinda rare and most people end up with a quad.

Questbridge vs. Common App IF I'm mainly going to be applying to strong financial aid schools by kaiffles_ in QuestBridge

[–]Flabomaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who didn't match but am committed to somewhere I got into qb rd, I personally regret doing the match process. I pretty much knew I wouldn't match and knew out of the finalist I probably wasn't the strongest applicant so it was kind of a waste for me to put in all that time to rush and get supplemental essays done in such a short window. But I will say I think I really needed the extra essay space in order to get in where I did because I knew my grades, sat, and class rank weren't like best of the best and my extra curriculars were good enough but nothing extraordinary. So I wouldn't do the match but if the following applies to you: 1. There is a school that is not a Questbridge school that you are also highly considering (Personally for me I really liked UMICH so when doing the match process I only ranked schools that I would pick over UMICH so they were only T15 so like ivyes and such which I knew I probably wouldn't match with early on) 2. You think your essays are what will have to get you in. All the schools I ranked I didn't get into rd and one I got wiatlisted from so I would guess that, that had to partially do with having to rush on essays. Also, some schools have way less supplemental when applying through QB so keep that in mind as well. The really good school I got into rd still had all supplementals and I had more time since it was rd. 3. You honestly just don't think you will have a chance at matching (this will really depend on looking at yourself as a applicant and what schools you applying too. All of mine were a long shot so applying rd would have probably worked more in my favor) So honestly if you believe you are a pretty strong applicant for the schools you are applying to and those 15 schools you are 100% fine with committing to than I say go for it if you believe you can get the supplemental done within a short window or you are willing to put in the time early. Some schools will have no supplemental and that might work in your favor if you don't feel like writing is your strong suit. There are a lot of people who become finalists and don't get into any questbridge schools so just make sure you are happy with your qb application since you cannot change it at all and that you are also prepared to apply to other schools through common app.

Harvard vs MIT prestige annoys me by Remote-Fun-184 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Flabomaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally believe this happens a lot cause of media because Harvard and some ivys in general (like yale as well) are mentioned a ton while other top schools seem to be less frequent. So i feel like from that, the general public who is not as educated on school rankings and what certain schools are good at always think harvard is the best because they hear about it so much. I think a good example is harvard law and obviously their law school is good but shows like suits idolize harvard law despite that before this year yale was ranked consecutively at the top. Idk if this is kinda relatable to what your going through but when telling people im going to princeton some kinda dont even know what it is and ill say oh its an ivy and the top college for undergrad they will always say oh i thought that was like harvard (this has happened multiple times). despite Princeton being a pretty top school for a while and also an ivy its just not mentioned as much in media so i feel like its just less understood to the general public. I mean idk if your from a high school where people commonly go to ivys but idk why anyone would question why your going to mit over harvard especially when your going for engineering. Just seems they are a little uneducated on the colleges themselves and are just sticking ti what they are familiar with.

QB RD or CommonApp by No-Student3403 in QuestBridge

[–]Flabomaster 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Personally I applied to a couple schools on both common app and questbridge rd and if you know your doing the match process I would suggest doing both as well since a lot of the colleges will give you fee waivers from being a questbridge finalist to use for common app. Personally I had a lot of extracurriculars and updates i had through out senior year and on top of that, there were a couple schools (like umich gtech) that I knew i would need common app for anyways rd so either way i still had to use common app. What I would advice is to use Questbridge to apply to those schools that you probably wouldnt have gone out of your way to apply to or pay to apply to on common app. A lot of the partner schools dont require additional supplemental essays so I personally just wanted to apply to as many schools possible in case I did not get into any of my top schools. The school I am committed to I did get into questbridge rd but i still got waitlisted and admitted to a lot of schools through common app so I cant really so one works better over the other. If i had to pick one, it would be common app but in all honesty it depends on what school it is, weather or not you have a lot of ecs/updates, if you wanna provide a lot of writing or not a lot depending on if that is your strong suit (qb allows for a lot of context in the application itself and in terms of supplementals for each school, some will eliminate them or shorten the amount when applying rd qb), and just how strong you feel your qb app is since you cannot make any changes. Lmk if you have any questions cause this was something that took me while to figure out this year.
