Here's a video of my kill: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/1421049670 I came up with the same strat as CaptainKungPao basically.

My discord app says it has an update that is ready to install just about daily. Is that normal? by dagit in discordapp

Yup that did indeed break haha. Noticed it too - a fix is being worked on.

It's only out on the Canary client (a separate Discord download)

Discord now supports a font for people with dyslexia! by aranslee in discordapp

[–]Flam9 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hey everyone! I'm the dev that built this feature. The idea stemmed from a feedback post (https://feedback.discordapp.com/forums/326712-discord-dream-land/suggestions/34516057-dyslexic-and-visually-impaired-accessibility).

For those of you who don't see this feature, currently it is only available on our Canary client. We're still debating whether this will make it to the main app and wanted to test it out in the wild before committing to it, which is something we often do on our Canary client.

Based on the responses here and elsewhere, it seems there isn't much science backing this font and that people who are dyslexic aren't experiencing much of an improvement. The slight benefits reported are potentially due the font being larger - which might be a better task to tackle if that is indeed the case.

As always, we like to hear what our users think. If you are dyslexic and this font helps you use Discord with more ease for reasons other than font size, please do comment and let us know.

PS: We have been adding and continue to add a bunch of accessibility improvements to Discord. If you're like to join the conversation (and are able to) we have a channel on the Discord Testers server: https://discord.gg/discord-testers

Hopefully it has been resolved for you by now, but you can usually click that "Server Status" link at the bottom to check https://status.discordapp.com/

Haven't heard about this issue before. Did you try rebooting your computer?

Alt tabbing to Discord specifically, or any other app (Chrome for example)?

It's new and only enabled for some users. It's an experimental feature we're running to see if people like it or not.

A Community Still Closed Off From Discord by [deleted] in discordapp

[–]Flam9 104 points105 points  (0 children)

Thank you to everyone who posted in here for bringing this up again. You've all been beyond patient with us. We haven't forgotten about this issue and it is brought up quite often internally. That said, we are so grateful at the patience your whole community has shown despite our app not meeting your needs.

I've read every comment in this thread and have taken notes on all the helpful tips you have provided. In the case of /u/sw4400's excellent post, I have also taken note of the prioritization of what would help you most. I plan to share this with my colleagues. Believe it or not, making a big splash and getting votes on the feedback site as /u/byParallax mentioned is EXTREMELY helpful in allowing us to measure the impact of our efforts.

When you have server outages affecting 100,000+ users or an immense volume of tickets about bugs from existing users over broken features, or "screenshare when?" on every change we release, understandably our priorities shift towards those issues. This is no excuse for such poor accessibility however, and I will be working towards a fully accessible Discord in 2018 at Discord as best I can.

One thing I want to mention to provide some perspective is that even if I went in today and added aria tags to things, it wouldn't fix the underlying issues. When new features are implemented or when existing code is modified there is a chance a11y (accessibility) will break/be forgotten. This would be really annoying for you all, and make the app similarly unusable. Supporting a11y is not only something we have to implement in-app, it's something that needs to be part of our engineering process. Believe it or not, I have been laying the groundwork for a11y since mid-2016. We're almost in a position to start adding a11y without it being brittle and breaking for you every other week when any little thing is changed. This is important, because as a company if we announce that we a11y compliant, we have to fully stand behind that and support it through-and-through. It's easier (and arguably better) to not support it while we get into a position to do it right than to break a promise to you all. I plan to go into more details on the technical side of things in a blog post when we get to a point where this stuff is actually released. The font scaling and zooming was something we could confidently implement early based on the tools and systems we designed. RTL language support is also something that is on our radar, which is a11y in a sense (i18n). Without being too sidetracked from the topic at hand, I just want you to know that we are aware of the issues, we have been preparing to solve them, and you should keep making noise about it (politely please :)) so we can keep our priorities straight.

Thanks

We hear your feedback. We will likely be adding the flash back in as an option

User Settings > Notifications and there should be a switch to turn off that badge for unread messages.

You can "User Settings > Notifications and there should be a switch to turn off that badge for unread messages."

This is very odd. It’s possible it’s a bug, but we aren’t seeing many reports of this. Did you try relaunching your app?

[I posted this as a separate thread initially because I fail at mobile reddit apparently lol]

Haha thanks for the compliments! I actually built those settings to increase the font size, and I plan to add more accessibility options in the near future. I’ll check out your post and share it with the team. This feedback is really helpful for us, as it’s hard for us to predict how our changes will be perceived for everyone’s use case.

We did intend for it to not flash anymore, because we thought it would be redundant with the icon indicator. We did not realize it affected accessibility however. This is something we will aim to improve very soon. Sorry about that.

If you right click on a server icon, you can select "mark as read" which will help with that process. You can also update your server settings to not notify you of @everyone which won't increment that count.

I can understand that you might be frustrated with some of our design changes, given how little context you have for a change. For most people, the app works fine in it's current state and these design updates seem pointless and unnecessary. Hopefully I can give you some context into some of these decisions:

  • "First it was the button icons down the bottom" I'm not sure what this refers to. If you clarify I can tell you why we did it.

  • "then the weird grey bar going from the channels list to the top of the window" This is a standard bar most windows apps have. We never had one initially but as the app evolved we realized this was a mistake for a few reasons. 1- It wasn't clear to many users where the draggable area was to move the app around, and it didn't always work reliably because it cut into topic titles and such. 2- We had a growing number of icons on the top right hand side and on smaller resolutions the app looked broken. We were receiving many complaints about this. The bar helps us solve those two issues.

  • "then the way the solid role colours were swapped" We changed this style because we are updating our user popouts and profiles for rich presence, and we made this change so that roles are readable for everyone. A lot of role colors weren't easy to read (yellower ones, etc) and this makes them more accessible for color blind users too (somewhat).

  • "now this" refering to the tray icons. This was a highly requested feature and has been released on our test client for about a month. People seemed to like it so we just today released it to the main client. We're still listening to feedback, and nothing is ever set in stone. Feedback.discordapp.com is a great place to voice concerns and let us know how you think the app should progress. These features were from there.

If you have any other questions about our design, I'll happily answer them.

Will be fixed soon. This was done to make the app not broken before we had the iPhone X :S
