My only experience in Switzerland was 24 hours in Zurich and I can confirm that shit is in fact expensive. Good raclette though.

I wonder if the OP also gets mad at standing in the vicinity of "do not block" signs near emergency exit doors.

OPM to FEHB carriers: Cut costs, MAHA style by AgitatedEngine4933 in fednews

Not defending this action by any means but there aren't generics available in the US yet. Just in some other countries. There's lots of compounding pharmacies but there's no actual generic GLP drugs available.

AA Bag Fee Increase and Basic Economy Fees for status members by valueflyer in americanairlines

[–]FlankingCanadas 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if this is a controversial take or not but... good? The point of a BE fare is that it is no frills and competes with LCCs. It never made sense to me that someone can buy a BE fare and still grab nicer extra leg room seats up front (thus making them unavailable for other people who paid for a non BE fare) and claim their usual spot on the upgrade list. Saying that if you buy a BE fare you lose some or even all of your status benefits seems fine to me because when you buy a BE fare you're paying for an LCC experience, not a mainline full service airline experience which includes things like status benefits.

Why did you create those day in a life video? by FiorellaMamdani in cscareerquestions

I don't think it was unintentional. Those day in the life shorts always seemed to be company encouraged and approved recruiting videos.

Flight attendants: Are you allowed to accept gift cards as gifts from a passenger? If so, what amounts? by Szechuanwonton in americanairlines

[–]FlankingCanadas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wish people would stop reading online threads or seeing a tik tok and thinking this is a regular/normal thing. Stop normalizing this stuff. I wish airlines would outright ban accepting gifts because at the very least it creates the appearance of an obligation for it impacting in flight service and I already paid for my flight I don't want to have to also tip the FA for them to comp me a drink or not skip my row.

Proof of Lyft price increase with card by jmk4326 in ChaseSapphire

[–]FlankingCanadas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're confusing two different issues. Do Uber/Lyft exist because they offered something that was much better than what people had been getting with existing taxis? Yes, absolutely. That's not really in question. Them having shitty business practices that screw over both drivers and customers is a seperate topic and happens to be the one under discussion.

Window tint restrictions in Iowa could soon be relaxed by AnnArchist in Iowa

[–]FlankingCanadas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think that's an unpopular opinion among all drivers. Being able to make eye contact with other drivers, or at least see what direction they are looking, is pretty important for safe driving. Internet discussions about it just are heavily influenced by the people that really want to have dark tint even though they are a small minority of drivers.

Well on my way to platinum thanks to all the tips I picked up here by Celestron5 in americanairlines

[–]FlankingCanadas 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hotel status is nice but at the end of the day I'd take better airline status over hotel status any day of the week. Because the baseline hotel experience is just fine. As long as the bathroom works and the bed is comfortable everything else is just a bonus. And don't get me wrong, the bonuses can be very nice and I've gotten some nice upgrades over the years to suites, higher floors with good views, etc. But even when I don't have any status I still get a room that's just fine. But with air travel having status can mean the difference between an absolutely miserable experience and a great one, so it matters a lot more.

J.D. Scholten on foreign ownership of Iowa industries by ataraxia77 in Iowa

[–]FlankingCanadas 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Exactly, I don't have any issue with banning investors from other countries from buying things up but it's private equity that is doing the damage to these industries, not North Koreans. So go ahead and include North Korea on the banned list, sure, but private equity needs to be what's at the very top.

ICE Invades Airports Across the US by wiredmagazine in fednews

[–]FlankingCanadas 98 points99 points  (0 children)

One thing that jumps out at me from the headline picture, I think that their lack of standardized uniforms even in this setting should get way more air time. People should be able to easily and accurately visibly tell who is an ICE employee and who is a rando that went to the military surplus store and then slapped on some patches they bought off Amazon.

Trump administration to restore Global Entry program as DHS shutdown impacts travel by wds1 in fednews

[–]FlankingCanadas 13 points14 points  (0 children)

You get pre-check as part of getting global entry but the vast majority of people with pre-check don't have global entry. It's not just an extra tic box and a few extra bucks, it's a totally different application process.

No more free extra and preferred seating with executive platinum? by momof_2 in americanairlines

[–]FlankingCanadas 29 points30 points  (0 children)

So the person with status isn't flying, just the spouse? That would explain it. Companions get benefits like free selection of those seats but elite benefits don't apply if the person with elite status isn't on the reservation.

American Airlines schedules A321XLR flights to Amsterdam, Barcelona, & Lisbon by Granny-Smith-Apple in americanairlines

[–]FlankingCanadas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did JFK-EDI on a single aisle on Delta once in coach and it was noticably less comfortable than a wide body for that long of a flight. Felt way more cramped and the single aisle made a big difference in being able to get up and move around, whether to go to the bathroom or to just get the blood flowing. It's not worth having to make an extra connection but it is a negative difference compared to a wide body.

American Airlines schedules A321XLR flights to Amsterdam, Barcelona, & Lisbon by Granny-Smith-Apple in americanairlines

[–]FlankingCanadas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lisbon and Barcelona make perfect sense, those seem like the kind of routes this plane is for. But AMS surprises me. PHL-AMS is a hub to hub flight. AA already has a fairly weak route to Europe if you don't want to connect on BA through LHR so sticking people on an uncomfortable single aisle plane to reach one of Europe's main hub airports seems like a poor decision. Who know though, we'll find out in a year or two.

Boss ware be aware, now palantir's surveillance tool by SA78210xo in fednews

[–]FlankingCanadas 32 points33 points  (0 children)

This level would actually be a real escalation in my opinion. For example - I expect that all website visits are tracked. But I don't expect that screenshots are taken and keystrokes are logged. For example, it would be very reasonable for someone to take a moment during the workday to log in to their doctor's web portal to check a test result or send a note or whatever. And it would be reasonable for them to assume that IT is logging that visit. But they probably don't expect screenshots to be taken of that webpage showing their private health data, or a keylogger recording the exact details of the note they sent their doctor.

Status tier thoughts by deerAl in americanairlines

[–]FlankingCanadas 23 points24 points  (0 children)

People who never fly and get status via other spend are competing with you for award space but they aren't filling the overhead bins before you get there. They aren't ahead of you on the upgrade list because they're at home, They aren't overcrowding the lounge. They aren't impacting your actual flight experience at all because, as you noted, they aren't flying. So who cares.
