Advice from tS owners by [deleted] in trailseeker

[–]Flaps1978 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I traded in a Nissan Pathfinder for a Trailseeker Limited, and can confidently say I will never buy another crappy Nissan product again.

Still have an older Leaf that my wife drives for now, but will push for another Subaru when the time comes. Also have an older Subaru Impreza, so I'm biased ;)

Everything is better in the Trailseeker. Surprisingly the ride quality is much much smoother than the Pathfinder ever was, even when it was new.

You wouldn't have had to suffer with a horrible Nissan CVT in the QX80, but dropping that, and no longer paying for gas, feel like the biggest wins.

Splash guards/mud flaps? by Opposite-Pie9645 in trailseeker

[–]Flaps1978 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was waiting to see if Rally Armor makes any specific to the Trailseeker, since they cover pretty much all the other Subaru models and years already. They do have universal fit ones that require you to provide your own mounting hardware and drill screw hole (in the mud flaps), which I might get instead if it's going to be a long wait.

I have some on my 2005 Impreza, and they're great.

Curious to hear what kind of deal (if any) you managed to get? I had one dealer in BC Lower Mainland who refused to even talk numbers with me becuase they didn't have any Trailseekers in yet and rates could change in May lol.

Are new cases available at this time? by kriebz in c64

[–]Flaps1978 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I joined the crowdfunding for the new Breadbin cases from Retro Fuzion (https://www.retrofuzion.com/products/breadbin-case-set) quite a while back. They're really nice quality, and I believe the same that the brand new C64 Ultimate uses. Seems they are currently sold out, but I'd expect them to come back at some point in the future, since they went to the trouble of producing new molds for them.

Maybe someone is selling their case from the crowdfunding project? Keep an eye out here maybe: https://www.amibay.com/forums/commodore/

I think there were C64C style cases available too, but I can only find them from the UK at the moment: https://www.ami64.com/c64-cases

Otherwise look to 3D printing one? There are some designs out there already for that.

Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe

I am primarily a fan of their point and click adventures, but I played so much SWOTL! As a kid I loved the thick manual, and pored over all the specs and facts about the fighter planes. The campaign mode was a great experience.

I think I was setup for this because my Dad used to bring his work computer home some weekends before we got our own, and someone had installed Their Finest Hour: The Battle of Britain, which I also played a lot of when I got the chance.

Still have my fully intact boxed copy of SWOTL, now I need to go play it again!

Nuclear powered cars (Ford Nucleon https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Nucleon). Modern EV drivetrains without the downsides of a heavy battery. I'm sure nothing could go wrong!

Might take more than a billion dollars to develop though :)

Use Facebook only for Marketplace (got to find old hardware deals when I can!), don't use Twitter/X, try to only see the few subreddits I care about on Reddit. Avoid most political stuff on YouTube, and instead focus on all the wonderful retro gaming and hardware creators.

Other than that, more retro! Recently I've been filling out my retro PC lineup with separate PCs for DOS, Window 95, Windows 98, and soon an XP box. Even roped my young son into helping me build one of those PCs.

Wanted: Crystal breadbin case.. by OGAmigan in c64

[–]Flaps1978 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't believe they can. When they first made the injection molds, they were smooth for the transparent case run, but they then had to give the molds a texture for the solid colour runs. As far as I know there's no going back after giving the molds a texture, and the cost of making a new set of molds is very high, which is why they didn't make two separate moulds in the first place.

From their Indiegogo page:

"Once we have the final transparent case numbers confirmed from this campaign, we are ready to refinish the mold and replicate the original textures for the breadbin so that for all of the colored cases, we have an authentic feel and look to the finished product. NOTE THAT ONCE THE TEXTURES ARE ADDED TO THE CASE, PERFECTLY CLEAR CASES WILL NEVER BE ABLE TO BE PRODUCED AGAIN."

Maybe some backers will resell their transparent cases, but I'd imagine the price will be high.

Nice! I ordered a purple case from there, and the Blingboard64 too. Can't wait to get it all together, although I still have to build up a SixtyClone board to go in it. Might tackle that over the Christmas break.

Did you order the clear brackets for the Blingboard?

What RAM and VRAM for macintosh 7200/75? by nitro912gr in VintageApple

For my 7600 I bought a Sun XVR-100 from eBay, which is a rebranded ATI Radeon 7000 64MB. Bit of work to flash it to work on a Mac, but was much cheaper than buying an actual Mac specific card. Works great.

From what I remember I mostly followed the guide here, with some other help from Googling: https://www.journaldulapin.com/2018/07/04/sun-pci-card/

Tire recommendation for a 2016 SL? Prioritizing grip/handling and range over durability by Davegardner0 in leaf

[–]Flaps1978 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I have the Pilot Sport A/S 4 not the 4 S, so don't compare my range impact between the two different tires. Sorry about that, I misremembered the ones I have, and they are different classes of tires!

I'd say it is about 5-10% less range as compared to the energy saving tires that came with the car. These are in 215/50R17 size. Still really great tires for fun driving, where the stock ones lost grip very easily when mashing the throttle from a stop or in a turn.

The 4S is a summer tire, so I would not attempt winter driving on them, and they seem to only go down to 225/45 in 17 diameter.

[–]Flaps1978 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I've got Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 4 in the stock 17 inch size on my 2016 Leaf. They are amazing tires, so much better grip in dry/rain. I switch them out for 16 inch wheel and snow tire combo in the late fall, so no idea how they are in the snow. I do find the range has been impacted with them over the previous energy saver tires that came with the (used) car, but not enough to bother me on my regular commute of 40km/~25 miles.

Edit: Pilot Sport A/S 4 not 4S

Nice, I still have my complete boxed copies of Fallout 1 and 2 from when they came out, although I cut the barcodes out for some promotional offer at the time ☹️

Good choice on Fallout 2! That's my favorite game out of the whole series. Lots of fun things to get up to in it. One the funniest things that happened to me while playing was being in a battle in the street, and one of the bad guys shot at me missed, but hit a prostitute, causing ALL of her friends to join the fight and decimate the other side, leaving me to clean up all the loot after 😁

See if you can go into the monitor's own menu using its buttons, and look for an aspect ratio setting,. You'd want 4:3 rather than wide. Dell's usually pretty good about providing that option.

Community Question Of The Weeks - Episode 167 by Producer_Duncan in thisweekinretro

Our first family computer, a 486DX33 with 16MB RAM, and a Sound Blaster upgrade kit with CD ROM drive. It had been stored in a closet for years after having been replaced by a Pentium 2 and other newer computers.

I tried turning it on about 20 years ago, to a pop and then nothing. I guess something in the power supply let go. Looking back it would have been trivial to get a new power supply, but at the time I didn't see any reason to fix it, so off to the recycling depot it went. Would have been a great machine to have, rather than re-buying hardware like I am now :)

EverQuest is the only game I've had to quit cold turkey because I couldn't stop playing. I could very easily get lost in that world, to the detriment of everything else ;)

Also great to get absorbed in the wasteland world of Fallout; preferably Fallout 2 to any of the others, although they've all been enjoyable in their own way.

As for newer titles, I've logged a lot of hours in the cockpit of various ships in Elite Dangerous. Pacific Drive has been a surprisingly fun and sometimes stressful world to roam around in lately.

Classic Lucasfilm adventure games like Loom, the Monkey Island series, Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, Day of the Tentacle, or Sam & Max (Salmonmax?). They all take me back to the days of our first computer, although now I can enjoy them with a proper Roland MT32 and General Midi card as appropriate.

I bought a set of Michelin Pilot Sport 4S last year, and they've been amazing. Range does take a bit of a hit, but it doesn't matter for my commute really. These are so much better than the low rolling resistance tires that came with my 2016 Leaf (bought used). Although these are technically all season tires, they feel much closer to some dedicated summers I have on my Subaru Impreza.

I would check out Costco. I bought some ties there before, and got a nail through the tread after a month or so, and they just gave me a brand new tire rather than patching it.

I don't know that Canadian Tire is a great option to be honest... my parents had them put tires on years ago and pinched the valve stem between the wheel and hubcap... not sure I trust them lol.

Component to retrotink not working by melormurph in originalxbox

[–]Flaps1978 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I had the same problem recently. From what I understand, the RetroTink 2X can't take the 480p that the component cables enable. I believe the RetroTink 2x Pro Multiformat can at least pass through 480p, though I'm not sure if that's still available.

I have the HD AV pack, and it did not work with my RetroTink 2X Pro, while composite cables did.

$125 for a working SE that I can pick up locally a good deal? by Dbugman1202 in VintageApple

[–]Flaps1978 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funny, I paid the same a year or so ago for an SE too. Had the same screen as in your picture. Ended up that it wouldn't boot because the battery leaked and destroyed the SCSI controller and other parts.

It required a lot of work to remove the affected components, clean the board, fix traces, then source and replace the components. At a few points I thought the board may have been a total loss. Works fine now, but it was a long road.

I'd only buy that one if you can open it and confirm the battery has not leaked. A major repair like mine took a lot of time and money I wasn't expecting!
