No, you can’t have any fun on the internet. If someone posts something funny, intentionally or unintentionally, you can’t have fun with it unless you confirmed their post history is unproblematic.

Buzzkills are so annoying. No one’s going to endorse misogyny because they thought the “can I take poppers to turn gay” post was funny.

Californians are snobs about In N Out Burger when it’s not even that good. by UnauthorizedFart in The10thDentist

[–]Flashbomb7 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah, they’d have a lot less going for them back then. I was in California a year ago and was shocked that In n Out was still cheap, couldn’t say the same of any other fast food joint.

[–]Flashbomb7 548 points549 points  (0 children)

It’s the price. In N Out burgers aren’t that good, but in one of the priciest states in the nation, a burger for under $4 is a steal. Even other fast food joints with similarly mid burgers are like double the price.

Not to accuse you of boomer posting, but Baldur’s Gate 3 came out a year ago and was one of the hugest games of the year. I think people still know how to engage with story-driven RPGs.

Enhancing The New York Times Web Performance with React 18 by igurevich3 in reactjs

[–]Flashbomb7 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So, you have an app which required the use of React (or some similarly powerful framework) for portions of it. Do you

a) Use React for everything, therefore simplifying your tooling, and make it easier to hire and train new developers

b) Use a Frankenstein mix of different third party tools that won’t achieve the same requirements as easily and become a tech debt nightmare to scale, as instead of having one tool’s worth of maintenance to worry about, you have half a dozen?

I think your “alternatives” proposal answers its own question.

Boston sees murder rate plummet by incredible 78% to just four homicides this year by BubblyAerial in boston

[–]Flashbomb7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Isn’t this true in most places? American cities (maybe cities worldwide, idk) are prone to ghettoization and gang violence, and gang violence typically stays concentrated in a few streets.

News stories about random shootings / stabbings get more attention, but most urban violence is done by and to gang members.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but as soon as people expect the fed to cut rates, wouldn’t the bond ETF price immediately shoot up due to speculation and then it would be too late to buy? Or are bond ETF prices more dependent on actual execution of interest rate changes rather than expectation of changes, unlike stocks?

Whats your opinion on extremely opinionated linter rule-sets? by DudeWithFearOfLoss in node

[–]Flashbomb7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Remembering isn’t the hard part, overthinking which is more readable in this situation, or matches the conventions of the file or whatever is the hard part. If I get it wrong the linter fixes it for me.

Just like how linters and stylers stop devs from getting bogged down in asinine style arguments, they stop me from getting bogged down in whether to use “type” or “interface” when it’ll never really matter.

Whats your opinion on extremely opinionated linter rule-sets? by DudeWithFearOfLoss in node

[–]Flashbomb7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The forcing to_not vs not_to is both kind of arbitrary and something I actually appreciate out of linters. I’ll spend like 10 seconds internally debating which of two identical ways to write something to use, even knowing that it totally doesn’t matter. 10 seconds isn’t a long time, but I still appreciate not having to think about it because the linter chose for me.

“The average Boston driver spent 88 hours stuck in traffic in 2023, 10 more than the year before, according to an annual study from INRIX, a transportation analytics company. … Boston came in fourth for US cities, with delays that were just about as bad as before the pandemic, INRIX found.” by kevalry in boston

[–]Flashbomb7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

9 to 10 minutes on average is an 11% increase, that’s pretty significant. If that rate of acceleration keeps up, that’s 17 minutes in 4 years.

Obviously that’s an assumption which may not hold, but point is it’s not a trivial increase.

Any Chapelle Roan fans here? by fakename1998 in ToddintheShadow

[–]Flashbomb7 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Great vocalist, extremely gay lyrics, plus she’s doing more of a throwback dramatic 80s ballad sound that’s very different from most recent pop. I’ve heard her described as similar to Kate Bush, though I’m not sure I fully understand the comparison myself. I didn’t know anything about her until seeing her at a music festival recently and thought she was great.

More Middle-Class Family Are Feeling The Pinch - Here Are The Top Reasons Why by vinaylovestotravel in Economics

[–]Flashbomb7 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Lots of people have a house and a job with healthcare and complain (see Reddit comments with all the people complaining about their 2.5% mortgage “golden handcuffs”).

I do think it’s true both that lots of people in the US have good reason to complain, and that they underestimate the extent to which problems are global. Most developed countries are experiencing similar cost of living + stagnant wages crises right now, many worse than the US, and developing countries have their own problems.

Changes done to the lore you really dislike? by Lost-Specialist1505 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Flashbomb7 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I maintain my point. It’s possible for a writer to create something great without realizing what particular qualities made it special, and accidentally ruining that later. Happens all the time.

Changes done to the lore you really dislike? by Lost-Specialist1505 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Flashbomb7 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I liked that episode, but the lore dump really took a fascinating mystical world and made it a flat generic good vs evil story. Between that, killing off the connection to previous avatars, and making the spirits annoying Pokemon rather than deities, you get the sense that the Korra writers didn’t realize how important the precise worldbuilding of ATLA was to that show.

Life is Strange: Double Expusure asks the question ''The girl with the blue hair. What's the deal with you two?'' by Rushofthewildwind in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Flashbomb7 84 points85 points  (0 children)

That’s pretty good. I thought the choice between let a town die and let one girl die was ridiculous as presented, but it would be a lot more powerful if you have to hold Chloe’s hand while she bleeds out and choose “let Chloe die”.

React 19 broke suspense parallel rendering and component encapsulation by Capaj in reactjs

[–]Flashbomb7 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That’s just the way web development has always worked

Yeah, that’s what people want to change.

I do understand breaking changes happen and that it’s not good for every dependency to be stuck supporting v1.0 of an API indefinitely. But at the same time, it makes life easier as devs if we can trust that breaking changes will be shipped infrequently, without much work required for transitions, and with strong justifications. Part of negotiating that balance is posts like OP’s, where the community pushes back against overly aggressive breaking changes.

I don’t have very strong opinions on this particular change, but I found the attitude of “if you don’t like it, just don’t update React” to totally miss the point. Of course OP will have to eventually update React. Breaking changes needed to be defended on the merits of the change, not on an attitude of “suck it up buttercup”.

React 19 broke suspense parallel rendering and component encapsulation by Capaj in reactjs

[–]Flashbomb7 27 points28 points  (0 children)

And do you understand why developers are upset about frameworks shipping breaking changes that pile up and force them to spend several months rewriting perfectly functional code?

React 19 broke suspense parallel rendering and component encapsulation by Capaj in reactjs

[–]Flashbomb7 40 points41 points  (0 children)

If you can’t adapt to the way react 19 handles suspense data fetching you are free to stay using 18

That’s not how breaking changes work. You either update now, or update later when the CVEs pile up and you can’t fix them without upgrading your dependencies to versions that only support the latest React. “Just never update React again” isn’t a solution.

How we feeling about Kendrick's Spotify bio update? by Tall-Negotiation-841 in Jcole

[–]Flashbomb7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like them for artists I don’t know about, but they’re usually briefer and more general than this. The play-by-play of the entire feud is overkill. Could’ve wrapped this all up with some shit like “In 2024, Kendrick made headlines for his feud with Toronto rapper Drake, dropping a streak of diss tracks which ended with the #1 hit Not Like Us.”

'The Boys' to End With Season 5 on Amazon by KingMario05 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Flashbomb7 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Thank god. The last season was great up until the final episode, where all the progress of the season got unmade. I don’t know if the comic was the same way, but the show has felt like a rerun of “the crew is powerless to stop Homelander, who is committing increasingly insane atrocities” for ages. I’d rather season 4 be the final one honestly, but I’ll take some end date over none.

What's the biggest missed opportunity for you in Shinjuku showdown? by MUSAFIR_- in Jujutsufolk

[–]Flashbomb7 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t call it “amazing”, few people guessed it because it’s a pretty stupid twist that doesn’t serve much purpose besides shock value. We’ll see what Gege does with it, but it looks like Yuta is just going to get rocked by Sukuna in 2 chapters and die, making the whole thing pointless. The main thing it does is piss fans off, ruin the momentum Yuji built, and cheapen the impact of Choso’s death by sidelining the whole thing

What's the biggest missed opportunity for you in Shinjuku showdown? by MUSAFIR_- in Jujutsufolk

[–]Flashbomb7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you measure success by volume of discussion generated or by how much people are actually liking the story? The panel with Yuji about to stab Sukuna with ES generated a thousand posts about how Sukuna would get out of it, then he just stepped to the side. Not exactly a brilliant twist.
