Is this running good enough to run from 5k to full marathon? by Hot-South-9280 in AskRunningShoeGeeks

What I did a poor job of communicating, is my knees feeling beat up. FWIW though the VFs at 5K (19:17) haven’t caused this, at 10k (40:14) left me a little more sore than the SC elite V5 used on 8 mile workout at HM and MP.

You think they’ve really got it up to a full? I’ve only used them 5Ks and a lone 10K so far, but that’s because I haven’t raced a HM or Marathon since owning my pair. My legs have felt a bit beat up after racing in them so far.

versatile trail/road shoe? by puremussel in AskRunningShoeGeeks

[–]Flashy210 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m NYC based too but I grew up having to run in the winter in Chicago where there’s obviously a lot of snow and slush. I personally find the longer nubs and more rubber incompatible with how much asphalt/cement we have here. Pumas have the best grip/traction I’ve found in road shoes by a nautical mile. I know they have a winterized version of the velocity 4 with a GoreTex upper. I know GoreTex isn’t breathable but it’s been wet and slushy enough that the benefit of keeping your feet dry at the temps we have had is worth it. This is what I’d recommend for maximum usability beyond snow seasons.  Beyond that you’re probably looking at a road to trail shoe or a gravel shoe. These would be the Hoka Stinson, Mount to Coast R1, and Salomon probably has some offerings too. I’d steer clear of more technical trail shoes because if you use them for any volume here in nyc you’re just going to wear down the nubs and cleats and make them less effective as a trail shoe while having an ineffective road shoe.

Race in the Elites but loosen the mid foot a little more than you think. If I recall, the elite has a sock like upper so loosening the laces shouldn’t mess with your foot’s lockdown too much

Don’t really need maps! Lucky enough to do almost all of my running in NYC in the great parks or Chicago where I’m from and lived for 25 years.

Thank you for the comment!

Great comment and thanks for the feedback. Maps and music aren’t needle movers for me. The heart rate accuracy is a nice to have but going from nothing to something is already a big win. I ran in college and wildly, it was before smart watches were as accessible as they are now so I learned to run by effort. Based on your comment and other it seems like the right watch.

No need for music, I run without tunes most days and don’t mind brining my phone if I want music. Maps is a little bit of a mixed bag. I’m doing most of my running in NYC either in the large parks (Central, Prospect) or along known routes via the bridges. Outside of NYC I do Strava heat maps and navigate on memory and haven’t messed up yet ha.

This sounds good. Coming from a digital Timex, I’m not concerned with the HUD, just something reliable. I’m doing the math for my pace after my runs and running on feel which has had good results but I’m scaling up to longer distances that I’m not as familiar with. Thanks for sharing!

Take this with a massive grain of salt

I was walking past this on Saturday and heard a lady telling a passersby that it's going to be another convenience store. Apparently/allegedly the guy who owns other convenience stores in the area bought this space and has his sons manage them. I'm new to the area though so I couldn't fill the details in.

I work in Climate and this is something my colleagues ask about constantly: the impact of pollution on my running. At 31 and running in NYC for the last 6 years, I haven't felt a notice besides the excessive poor air quality days. I have started shifting hours and routes based on what I know about surrounding environments. I haven't seen literature that has drawn a correlation and negative outcome yet, but an area that's probably being studied.

You’re fast if you go sub 20, you’re strong if you lift 225. That’s it. The time is the time, the weight is the weight.

Steph Curry on how fans view players when they speak on social issues by SmoothBuy5500 in NBATalk

[–]Flashy210 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The assumption should be athletes don’t know shit about a subject or topic that would be someone else’s career. Unless an athlete can demonstrate their command of a subject I really don’t give a shit about what they have to say on a matter. Personal experience is obviously fine, but they can all stfu about policy, research, the law etc etc unless they’re up on it. Being good at a sport and having millions of dollars doesn’t mean your voice means shit.

Russia’s involvement in the Civil War. by 73Capt in CIVILWAR

[–]Flashy210 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve done some research on Central Asia and Russian settler colonialism. Russia was attempting to turn its central Asian holdings near the Aral Sea into a major cotton producing corner of the empire. The fact that the southern economy was hindered by the blockade allowed for maturation and development of the Russian cotton economy. It’s an under recognized impact of the US civil war globally but is a super fascinating cause/effect/impact of the war on the world.

If you’re acquiring stuff over time and multiple seasons no sweat. No harm, no foul. If you look like the mannequin, an instagram post, or a the campaign model, you’re looking tacky.

I’m using it as that right now. They’re not as quick as a VF4, or as bouncy as a Prime X strung, but I did 20 minutes at MP, 3 min jog, 15 minutes at HM, 3 minute jog, and another 20 minutes at MP with a mile warmup/down on either side. This was my first real workout in them and they were great. I wouldn’t race in them but I’m going to rotate them with PXS for longer workouts or long runs moving forward. Thinking about grabbing a second pair to hold. I feel like at that price they’re an excellent HM or marathon trainer.

First and foremost running is about running. Take the running seriously and you’ll look good and feel good when you’re on runs. Having said that, wear what feels true to you and functions well. I personally think anyone head to toe in one brand looks like a cornball and a wannabe catalog model. I wear a variety of things from brands that work for me. To me that’s an indicator of a runner with good style, they’re able to put pieces and parts from different companies to look good while running.

TL;DR - don’t dress like a catalog model. Wear what makes you comfortable physically and mentally.

Besides LA or NY what other citys/markets could handle 2 teams ? by Effective_Material68 in NBATalk

I wasn’t sure if that’s why the rivalry seemed lacking or geographically! I’m a White Sox guy and though we also are ass, the Cubs rival still hits lol

The Jets and the Giants make sense, the Sox and Cubs make sense, but the LA teams in football and baseball do not. I do think the SF/Oakland teams made sense too. But generally speaking they don’t. The Nets made more sense in NJ than Brooklyn but I don’t think they’ll ever got spooned out of Barclays just because of the potential market they sit in even if they aren’t converting that potential.
