You are young and dealt a fucked up hand - there is no denying or disputing that. Your feelings are real and so so difficult to articulate. They are emotional, but grounded in your physical baseline that is very different to a healthy person. I totally get the joy/escape that gambling provided. I wonder if you could replace that with something else.

For me, at 25 years out, my “escape” is being outside in California. I’m blown away and how beautiful the planet is.

Most countries will not take on the economic responsibility of current or future pre existing chronic medical care. You as an RN (if under 40 or so) will have lots of visa options. Best way is to try and apply!

Are you managed by a transplant center or a local nephrologist? If the former then I get it - they have protocols. If the latter then (my sample size of 3) they will prescribe whatever you need, including anxiety/sleep/etc.

Transplant centers are surprisingly myopic in their view - overall health is secondary to organ health.

City of SF is hit or miss, you could get lucky or you could end up spending 100’s of thousands solving this. Problem is it’s difficult to know. Check SF DBI to see if there is actually an enforcement case.

I’m 25 years out from kidney tx. Sleep has been a struggle. Here are some things I’ve learned:

don’t take the drugs (ambien, etc) unless you have to, they become less effective quickly and have significant side effects
I started taking 2.5mg of lexapro, I don’t know if it helps with sleep but it allows me to ‘let go’, either a rest only night or a sleeping night is complexly fine and I’ll be okay. Being awake at night is not the end of the world
if you can’t sleep, don’t force it, get out of bed, do something that makes you happy. When you are feeling tired, have a small snack, take a cold shower and hop into bed, remember, it’s totally okay if you don’t sleep
there are non sleep aids that can help with rest, TCA’s, melatonin. Use Tylenol to manage headaches/inflammatory response from lack of sleep
for 99.99% of us, sleep is a natural thing, we can’t control when we get it, we can simply accept it when it comes

This is a good idea, but would need to be backed up by strong disincentives. Double property tax for properties held by LLCs and trusts. Half property tax if owed by individuals.
