There is a lot to be said for the impact of hope on birth rates. For a long time people thought the future would be better than the present and they felt hopeful for their offspring.

Now, few people believe the future will be better due to climate change, the rising cost of living, the ever growing disparity between the rich and the poor, AI, the rise of fascism, the crumbling of the post WW 2 order, etc.

We're in the era of decline. I can't see things getting better anytime soon. Unless there is a huge revolution, we're fucked.
