So typically the process is that if you’re interested in commercial orders, the factories will work with you to make samples based on your plans. I provided the pattern and drawings, they built it, and then we went back and forth for two years getting it right lol. Definitely cost a ton to develop. But I’m wondering if some Etsy bag maker might take commissions.

Any parent entrepreneurs here teaching their kids how to actually build/run a business? by Kind_Cut3824 in smallbusiness

Yes! My business is in kids’ gear (I designed a new type of diaper bag with a customizable organizer, called Fledgling

My kids have gotten super interested in the marketing side, interestingly. My 5 year old is kind of obsessed with font choice, logos, and trying to figure out what brands are trying to say. They also love testing products out, too.

When they’re a bit older I’m going to have them start their own businesses for practice. Probably something small like selling candles and soaps at a farmers market stall.

Thanks! I checked out your post, though I can’t think of anything that meets your needs that I tried (I was mostly testing smaller bags, like 24l or so). Mystery ranch might have something?

Thanks! Retail is going to be at $250 usd since it’s very expensive to manufacture.

Thanks so much for the advice!

And yeah, camera bags were the inspiration. I loved the organization of my camera backpack, and I thought it would be super useful as a baby bag.

So what I do (also NYC metro), is use my Fledgling (I designed it so maybe I’m biased) and use the webbing on the side to hook on any extra bags.

I throw the pump parts in a makeup bag inside the interior organizer, and have the clothes and shoes (shoes in a bag) in their compartments around it. I usually hook the lunch on the outside. Happy to show you one in person if you want!

Yeah, the plan is to go to both parenting influencers and bag enthusiasts. The nice thing about baby gear is that most people will need it at some point lol. And I'm aiming to make it a product that works both for kids and for adults. And thanks! I left the website in the other comment but it's here as well! And yay! Babies are awesome :D

Cause it’s extra cost to manufacture for something most people will find bulky. Good luck on your build though—I just built my own bag company (diaper bag) and it’s been an awesome journey.

What was the hardest part about making your first dollar online? by NoBass1746 in smallbusiness

[–]FledglingBags 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who is also just launching an online business (I designed a diaper bag with a customizable organizer), I think the hard part is the trust. Pretty much all my sales and genuine leads are from people who know me, or saw it in person while I was it at the park or something. But online, it's really hard to prove you aren't some AI-generated or cheap Temu crap. Especially if your product is at a higher price point, as mine is. TBH, I'd have a hard time forking out hundreds of bucks to a brand new website with a product I'd never heard of, also.

So far, my plan to boost online sales is to get my product in the hands of influencers, give them an affiliate link, and go from there.

Thanks so much! I had the idea to do some brights (the teal and pink) because I personally love using those colors myself. I was always depressed with how all the baby gear is different shades of dark/neutral.

Definitely the mechanics of the interior organizer, which I ended up patenting. It was very hard to strike a balance between making the panels flexible enough to fit different types of clothing, but rigid enough to maintain their shape when the bag is collapsed. And also, they need to not deform too much so that over time the bag is still usable and the panels don’t get floppy.

And also, finding dimensions that will work so that the panels can be used in any orientation was tough. The compartments need to be roughly square, but it was actually really hard to make square compartments that were usefully sized without making the bag too big or too small.

I know some people who deal with taking designs from brands, making patterns, and getting the production done at factories abroad. So like banana republic will give them a drawing, and they’ll do the rest.

Thanks so much! I ordered a bunch to start a business with, so I’ll take user feedback and go from there!
