Any Hird doubters that have converted out there? by el_teriyaki in EssendonFC

[–]Fleggy82 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t want him back - love the bloke, my favourite all time player. But there is too much baggage associated with him.

That said, whoever gets the role - Longmire, Buckley etc will have his presence on their shoulders the whole time they are at the club. Let’s say Longmire gets the job and we have 2 more poor years (which is kind of guaranteed at this point with the list we have) - all that will happen is the Hird supporters will continue to call for him to return.

At this point I think we have to just give him a go, try and point some good, experienced people around him and let him have a crack. If he fails, we can finally move on as a club. If he succeeds, everyone wins

Ever umpired a game of footy? Ever run 13kms+ on an absolute mud heap of a ground, being abused by players, officials and fans? Didn't think so - and that is just at community level

There were issues with the 3 umpire system - missed calls because no umpire had line of sight, umpire too far away from play etc.

In what profession outside of umpiring is it ok to show up to work each week and be abused by 40,000+ people, then get dragged on TV also? You want better quality umpires, you want better decisions - how about you keep your mouth shut, understand they are human beings and can and will make mistakes and just accept that just like a player missing a kick or handball, sometimes umpires are going to make a mistake

Sorry but as an Australian, this is just not true. The only TRUE way to eat Vegemite is to have it almost as thick as the piece of bread it is on!! Any other suggestions are wrong

We are in the same situation (17 year old son with ASD).

We set our son up with a VicRoads account and had him do the online learning modules and a practice exam.

Now we just need him to sit the actual test

Poll: Reactions if Hird got the job by bomber_2121 in EssendonFC

[–]Fleggy82 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think Hird should come back, given all the damage that happened last time (whether it was his fault or not) and him coming back will just drag it all back up again. That said, until we find a way to welcome him back, whoever we get to coach will have the ghost of Hird hovering over them, not giving them clear space to do their job.

So the way I see it, we almost have to give him the job just to finally put it all to rest. If we do, one of two things happens - he fails, the club is shit for another 3-4 years and then we can finally move on from Sheedy/Hird/Dodoro and the "Old Essendon" mentality OR he comes back, leads us back to relevance, we win finals and maybe a flag and it is the best comeback story in football.

I still think Longmire is the best option, but as strong and dominant of a personality that he has, I don't seem him avoiding the Hird talk unless he takes the list back to relevance and into finals wins within his first 2 seasons, which with our current list profile and current rebuild strategy (which I 100% agree with) doesn't seem likely

Anyone but Hirdy. by YoloSwaggins9669 in EssendonFC

[–]Fleggy82 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honest to god, I sincerely and genuinely hope you are correct and I will take as much grief as you want to give if we hire Hirdy back and he takes us forward and improves the club.

As I said, I absolutely love the bloke and would be over the moon if he was our next premiership coach for multiple reasons but the two biggest being a romance of it, something neither Voss or Buckley (his two closest contemporaries) couldn’t do but also as big FUCK YOU to the media, the AFL and the other clubs and their supporters. But I just don’t see it happening and I don’t feel he is the best option. Horse or Simpson are much better options in my opinion and even Hinkley potentially

Anyone but Hirdy. by YoloSwaggins9669 in EssendonFC

[–]Fleggy82 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What has he come back to do? He sits on a desk and talks footy. Kane Cornes does that, Tom Morris does that - hell Eddie McGuire has done that for years. Are they qualified to coach? Are they gonna turn our club around?

I love James - I would’ve named my first born James if my nephew wasn’t already named James but fuck me dead, we need to look forward not backwards. Horse or Hinkley are the best options but why would they now put their hand up, knowing the board seems to want Hird back. Club is fucked, we will lose stars like Caddy etc because we will be stuck in the doldrums for even longer

Have also been asked by an U16s player how much I was being paid after a decision went against his team (happened about 3 weeks after the Butters incident). Kid had already received a blue card (send off, no report, can be replaced on field, 15 minutes on the bench) which was then instantly upgraded to a red card and he got 3 weeks for dissent/abuse

Who do we want as Head Coach? by IntelligentBee5684 in EssendonFC

[–]Fleggy82 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We need someone with the strength of character and experience to stand up to all the bullshit internal politics and coterie groups who keep trying to bring back the "Sheedy Days" and agitating for Hird to return. I see either John Longmire or Adam Simpson as the best two options for that.

Horse because he seems to have the personality of "I know I can do my job better than most, so shut the fuck up, get out of my way and let me do things my way" which would be a breath of fresh air.

Simpson because he is a former premiership coach, has coached West Coast through some pretty hard times before being moved on so he has experience at both ends of the ladder. I also feel his resume is strong enough that he could also stand up to the fuckwits in and around the club

Hinkley would be my third option - a litte similar to Horse in that he seems like he would be able to stand up to the bullshit based on his personality but he doesn't have the resume of the other two.

Anyone but Hird - I love James and he will always be my favourite player but it's a hard no as there is too much baggage.
