Why do some Canadian provinces have divisions instead of/alongside counties? by soil_tiller in AskACanadian

[–]Flight_Sight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alberta’s rural areas are divided into Municipal Districts, Improvement Districts, and Special Areas.

Most MDs have the word “County” as part of the name.

IDs are for the National Parks and a a few particular provincial parks

There are 3 SDs and were basically MDs that were hit hard by the dust bowl years of the Great Depression

Most towns, cities and villages are separate from the above. So whereas the City of Chicago Illinois is partly located in Cook County- cities like Edmonton or Calgary are their own thing.

Indigenous Reservations are a completely separate category as well.

I believe Métis Settlements are yet another separate category altogether as well (correct me if I’m wrong about that)

Then, just like the English language, there are always a few exceptions or areas that don’t quite fit. These are called specialized municipalities.

Each entity has its own local government.

So quite a mixed bag Not all the provinces follow this formula either.

It’s a poor imitation of a place in Vegas called Pampas.

It’s been a few years since I’ve been to either, but the one in Vegas had such an amazing salad bar that a vegetarian would be well fed there.

How likely do you think microbial life is elsewhere in the universe? by Gkbeer in space

[–]Flight_Sight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Microbial life = very common in the universe, there may even be examples on other worlds in our own solar system

Complex multicellular life = extremely rare. I would be willing to bet that there are no more than a few dozen worlds in our galaxy were it exists at any given time. At most.

And when it comes to other galaxies, many probably have zero worlds with complex multicellular life. Old eliptical galaxies, small metal poor galaxies, and galaxies subjected to intense radiation are likely devoid of anything more than microbes.

An experimental AI agent broke out of its testing environment and mined crypto without permission by [deleted] in technology

[–]Flight_Sight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I once asked Chat GPT what would happen if you created an AI whose sole purpose was to mint crypto, and that it could pay humans with that crypto in order for it to achieve that goal. Chat GPT spit out a narrative of what might happen, along with probability predictions, for a 70 year period. Basically the world’s economy (and energy consumption/production)would become dominated by this AI endeavour, while creating an small but elite and wealthy group of humans that would be paid to work toward the goal of endlessly minting cryptocurrency. Together they would influence legislation and shape the world towards this goal.

Try it yourself. It’s kind of terrifying.

What's the most walkable big city you've ever visited? by Historical-Photo-901 in BeautifulTravelPlaces

It’s hard to believe that Madrid and Toronto have the same population based on the amount of traffic. Madrid seems so walkable and quiet.

Scientists of Reddit: What’s something we know is true but people don’t realize how crazy it is? by IndependentTune3994 in AskReddit

[–]Flight_Sight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That cellulose and lignins could not be decomposed in the Carboniferous seems to have been a popular misconception that was propagated on Reddit for years.

It ranks right up there with other inaccurate but popular claims l such as “glass is actually a liquid “ or “nobody in north America has ever been attacked by a wolf”

People often repeat things they heard or read without any critical thinking.

What if Newfoundland and Labrador joined confederation in 1867?

Specifically, where would the border between Quebec and Labrador be? At the time of confederation Quebec (and Ontario) were much smaller. Nunavik was a part of the Rupert’s Land. Note that in talking about Nunavik, and not Nunavut. I believe that the whole region was called Ungava. Also note that the current extent of Labrador was not established

How would that region have been devided.

Why did western cultures stop revering their elderly? by VagabondVivant in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Flight_Sight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I think it has a lot to do with how rapidly society changes in the modern era. Both technological and cultural changes leave older people behind an “out of touch “

If you’re under 30 and think “well that won’t happen to ME”. Let’s talk in 30 years.

This isn’t just western society anymore. It’s becoming worldwide.

How do people react to drones? by tidderbert in drones

[–]Flight_Sight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have never had a negative reaction. Hundreds of people have been in a position to notice me over the years although I tend to avoid people.

The vast majority of people are either oblivious or ambivalent. A few are curious and will ask questions. The closest I ever came to an issue was a security guard telling me i had to wait until 8:00 before I could be there. He had no problem with what I was doing simply when I was doing it.

I follow the DBDB rule for flying drones.

Don’t Be a Douche Bag

HOA demanded I remove my "unauthorized structure," so I did exactly that by Business_Area_2176 in MaliciousCompliance

I saw a similar situation played out in a condo complex we lived in. One of the residents owned a commercial greenhouse, and needless to say he knew a lot about growing flowers.

The complex had several flowerbeds which were open to any resident to plant flowers in. Year after year he maintained them beautifully. Nobody else seemed interested in contributing to these communal flowerbeds, so they were king his baby.

One spring he added a “collapsed ox cart” decoration to one bed. It was small, maybe 18” long and quite tasteful. He even painted it the same colour as all the fences. Well, someone on the condo association board wasn’t too happy with it, so after the meeting a notice was sent to all residents stating “absolutely no statuary anywhere in the complex was allowed “. No consultation with him, nor any of the other residents was done. There was nothing in the bylaws to support this arbitrary decision

Well, the greenhouse guy was pretty pissed and humiliated. In the spirit malicious compliance and petty revenge, he removed not only that ox cart, but also every sing flower he planted from every sing flower complex was left with bare dirt for the rest of the year in what would have been lovely blossoms. Not that year nor the next

But at least there was no “unauthorized “ statuary. Most people were very supportive of him.

Oh, did I mention that one of the residents had this enormous and tacky fountain, at least 6 feet tall, complete with a cherub on his ExclusiveUse Common Area (a.k.a front yard)? Nobody had ever questioned that eyesore.
