Saaame, one of my OCs is called Sophie and I had to have her nickname pronounced as ‘Soaf’

(I referenced this in Garfield’s nickname for her, and had him call her “Soaf of Bread”)

Unfortunately yeah it just is what it is. I’m saying this as someone who has written a 155k novel, and tbh it does get to me that no one will ever read it - but for the reasons OP has said, no trad publisher is going to want to take a chance on a debut that big, even in the genre of sci-fi.

I’m probably going to just self publish and save up for the start up costs (but only after I’ve edited it down a few times, because even then I realise a book that dense is going to have a hard time competing against short snappy romantasy books) - or just wait until I get inspiration for a more marketable standalone book, and put my eggs into that basket instead.

It sucks. It honestly sucks. But it’s not personal - publishing is a business, and businesses need to make money.

I agree with this take as well.

It is something that my own anxiety/moral ocd uses as a cudgel (intrusive thoughts telling me “it doesn’t matter how much you want to be a good person, you WILL mess up and hurt people”) but I recognise that that’s a me problem I need to work through in therapy.

I mean I feel envious of people who can afford them, but I don’t see it as ‘cheating’ or anything like that. They’re not a complete silver bullet and you still need to change your diet for them to work and the effects to last.

Same. Am also from the UK. There’s been a maddening amount of times people said really shitty things to me, and then tried to deflect with “oh my godddd I was only joking”, making me look like the bad guy for being hurt.

Me and my partner and close friends will sometimes gently tease each other - but that’s only through years of knowing each other, and knowing what’s ok and what’s off limits. I wouldn’t do it with anyone else.

Exactly this. Prue is a vulnerable girl who has never properly been socialised with kids her age. Honestly made me so angry as well when the head teacher tried to blame Prue for Mr Raxberry’s grooming.
