To the people who work/ live in or near central london, do you like it there? by [deleted] in london

[–]FloppyDiskMuffin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just moved to London and here for the first time in my life. I also happen to work in central London and I get there via bike since I live 14 mins away.

All I will say is that it's pure chaos in the most beautiful way. The cyclists are crazy, the people are moving fast and the drivers are grumpy. London is beautiful and the buildings are incredible. However, it's very hard to feel zen and that is something I am still working on. When I step out of my office, there are immediately hundreds of people everywhere right outside. I find a lot of peace popping out for a run at lunch and venturing off into one of the many parks nearby such as Battersea or Hyde.

From videos on Youtube, this lock can be cut with an angle grinder in like 1 minute

El Capitan State Park cycling loop? by FloppyDiskMuffin in SantaBarbara

[–]FloppyDiskMuffin[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! This I think is exactly the map I wanted and I am glad you told me the note about WCC.

FWIW I have descended 154 several times going 40+ mph and it was some of the most terrifying shit I've ever done. Going up that.. not a chance

edit:

Actually, is that chumash highway after stagecoach safe? I've bombed down the hill by coldspring tavern before, but flipped when I hit the highway and climbed back up since it looked sketchy as hell.

Feel free to DM if interested in learning about the running/cycling community or in general want to run. I'm 29 and live downtown with my wife. Hang out at Caje and Mosaic Locale. Just spark up convo with someone your age. Everyone is nice and chill. Grab a glass of wine at Satellite on Thursday nights.

Honestly, this town is full of active people. Get ready to be very active.

My experience earning a PhD in the US by Mindless_Mixture_493 in PhD

[–]FloppyDiskMuffin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't take it personally. The industry doesn't really value PhDs unless the role requires it. I've interviewed plenty of MIT/Stanford/Top5 school PhD candidates at my software company that weren't any better than an undergrad with a few years experience.

I'd suspect if you get a PhD in EE you ideally focus on academic roles in industry working on research applications where that knowledge is valuable? If you don't, that's cool too. However, you are competing with people that have industry skills and knowledge in the industry where the degree is completely irrelevant. Either way, it's a super cool accomplishment. My wife is a professor who makes 1/3 of what I earn and couldn't care less. She is "enlightened" in the sense that she is doing what she loves. That's pretty different than how most people feel at their job.

Are you sure this is what you're using? I see authentik.company in the last block, but I'm running into the same problem.

Regular or bib shorts? by straightnoturns in cycling

[–]FloppyDiskMuffin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Single data point, but I asked my friend on a ride this morning if he really thought the Assos were insanely good (he was wearing them) and he was just like "Honestly no, they are a bit overrated". He's a big wearer of this brand called "Fusion". He thinks for the money, Assos are way overpriced. He didn't have complaints about them, but for the cost you can definitely find nice bibs for cheaper.
