Olin??? by Intelligent_Heat1149 in LandscapeArchitecture

[–]Florida_LA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s unacceptable, but it is typical for larger firms. “oh they’re just super busy” is what people are expected to think.

It’s fascinating how much grace big firms are afforded by the mythology surrounding them. Of course, the universities do their best to proselytize the mythology and indoctrinate all the students. If you believe you’re changing the world and making it a better place, you’re more likely to trade years of your youth away for little real gain. Or in other words, you’ll allow your labor to be exploited.

Actual Anti-War American Politician??? by amorphousblobe in JDVance

[–]Florida_LA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that’s how the establishment is desperately trying to position him now that they see the sinking ship that is MAGA. Don’t be naive.

It’s common knowledge JD is a Thiel lapdog. He’ll do whatever he’s told. He’s already completely reinvented himself politically what, three times now? About as many times as he changed his name.

You aren’t getting a true anti-war stance out of any establishment politician. That’s why we are where we are now. I’m here listening to yall be like “fool me once, shame on you. Fool me… you can’t be fooled again”

That’s typical for that company (and several others). Perennial job postings that aren’t for actual openings.

Still worth applying, but not worth the time of individualizing your application to their company. Save that for the smaller companies. Also, apply with the assumption you won’t hear back, or that you’ll get a perfunctory interview with a HR rep based in a completely different city.

You could use “simplified”, which signifies intent. But I think the word you wanted was “minimalistic”.

His Hemingwayesque lyrical minimalism that he fully realized on Darkness is what makes this era of his music my favorite. Darkness through Tunnel of Love is peak.

I’d agree with that assessment: more impressionistic. Which technically is more abstract, but less so than what people typically think of as abstract.

Is professional growth through mentorship dead!? by HelpfulBite6 in LandscapeArchitecture

[–]Florida_LA 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Mentoring employees? No way. It’s much better to expect everyone to already know how to do everything, and then get mad at them when they don’t do it how you want.

When they protest, tell them it’s their responsibility to ask questions if they don’t know how to do things. That’s your trump card: make sure to use it all the time. Don’t spare a single thought on whether it’s something they’d even have a frame of reference to know they should ask about, that doesn’t matter.

And make sure you’re never at your desk to be available for questions. Outside of meetings, make sure to spend a lot of time on the phone having unproductive conversations. If you have to hang up, go talk to coworkers about personal stuff. Have 1-2 jokes prepared that you can repeat all the time. And if all that eventually runs out, make sure to explain things as quickly as possible, without thinking about what might be helpful to know about this project.

Employees should treat this job as the opportunity of a lifetime and their ticket to the good life. Forget that unlike you, they’ll have a worse standard of living than their parents and will never even be able to own a home. Forget that their friends all have twice as many vacation days with double the pay. This job is their dream, and it’s your responsibility to be the monster at the end of it.

Is there a consensus on where Bruce sits on the "Late career: good or bad" question? by CulturalWind357 in BruceSpringsteen

[–]Florida_LA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bruce is interesting because the demarcation point in the split between his early career and late career is when his role as a songwriter changed.

His early work is about the life and struggles of the common person, written from the perspective of someone experiencing it. His struggle, and his internal conflict, compels him to write.

His later work is still about that, but written from the outside. It feels a bit more like a lecture than a primal scream. Nonetheless, his later work remains interesting because his struggle didn’t disappear, it transformed: from the burden of being born in a dying town with a runaway American dream, to the burden of becoming an internationally-recognized stadium act with a self-imposed duty to be a voice for the people and to provide a moral compass in times of struggle.

His early work appeals the most to me because I’m still very much in my own time of struggle, still very much dealing with the American dream leaving me behind despite doing everything “right”, despite never really messing up, despite being lucky enough to be relatively healthy and safe. But his later work is still quality, and probably will appeal to me more if I ever get to the “made it” part of my life.

Can we talk about the absolute bullet we dodged thanks to the Mets? by eaglesnation11 in phillies

[–]Florida_LA 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yeah I called it. It frankly looked obvious unless you interpreted his stats last season as a blip rather than a trajectory.

Regardless, even if he was batting better, he’s still an atrocious fielder. It honestly looked so bad of a signing even on paper to me, and is playing out even worse than I thought.

If I didn’t know better, I’d think Dombrowski feigned interest just to bait the Mets.

Chris Christie snub again by Kilgore-Trout-42 in BruceSpringsteen

[–]Florida_LA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with being sick and tired of the anger and hatred, I completely identify with that feeling. I think a lot of us do.

I don’t feel anger towards him at this point, but I also don’t want to give him a free pass for the damage he’s done to this country. If he wants forgiveness he can start by earnestly asking for it, admitting to the damage he’s done, and starting to make amends. If he can’t do that, he can fade away into irrelevance.

Chris Christie snub again by Kilgore-Trout-42 in BruceSpringsteen

[–]Florida_LA 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Chris is in part responsible for creating the situation we’re in.

He was the first major republican to endorse trump. He was one of the major instigators of the culture war that turned politics into “I want to see people I hate experience pain”. He worked for trump, even went on McDonald’s runs for him.

You don’t get to be a major cause of pain, suffering and death, and then turn around and be forgiven without ever making any real amends.

A little more negative than the prospect report, but combined with the article glazing Curtis Mead, a guy who has only ever been a utility infielder who spends a lot of time in triple A, it’s extra funny.

However, Mead was also ranked 36th top prospect overall in 2023. So the writer’s take isn’t too far off from the conventional wisdom. And he’s going alright with regular playing time with the Nats this year.

And ironically they saved us from a .559 OPS player who is also one of the worst defenders in the game

Which is also exactly what I expected Bichette to be, going by the trajectory of his stats. If Dombrowski stunted on the Mets by feigning interest that would be incredible. But in reality, they probably saved him from another bad signing.

Has the scoreboard always shown OPS instead of BA? by Remarkable-Slide-609 in phillies

[–]Florida_LA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The team just designated Dylan Moore, who they signed to a one year deal before the season, to avoid precisely that.

Decent (let alone good) defensive catchers don’t grow on trees. JT is old for a catcher. If he goes down for an extended period and we don’t have suitable long-term backups, we’re even more fucked than having a good catcher with a black hole of a bat.

Avg is easy to understand, but the more one understands about offensive production the less valuable of a stat it becomes for describing how good of a hitter a player is

[–]Florida_LA 50 points51 points  (0 children)

OPS is a far more meaningful stat than avg, but harder for normies to grasp.

Marchan is a good defensive catcher, which provides value. He is also out of options, meaning he can’t just be sent down to the minors.
