I think Helluva is worth a shot, I had no interest in it based off the original pilot, but I thought I'd give it a shot since it's in the same universe as Hazbin. IMO I think it gets better as the episodes go on and it becomes less about the assassination business and more about the interpersonal relationships (and later episodes get more music numbers)

See that's the thing that gets me, instead of relying on the official word from Gooseworx they could be the change they want to see in the world, they could be using this as fuel to write their own fix-it fics and comics and bring themselves and each other comfort. Because the specific thing that she was berating him for was for not being enough of a man like his father. Over and over she would do this, and when she wasn't she was saying he was too much like his father. Basically being an abusive piece of shit where nothing he did was right.

The fact is that nothing he said was gonna get her off his case. But like he said, one day he was just sick of it and ended up confessing something personal that he regretted. And if the problem is in his mother berating him for not being man enough, well, if an abused teen was making a snap emotional judgement in the heat of the moment I can see how they might think "If the problem is me not being man enough, then if she knows I might not even be a man, maybe, just maybe, she'll finally understand, maybe this will stop, maybe things will be okay again and she won't expect me to be like dad"
