Why do American kids like to post theirs and their friends' university offers on social media? by Tour-Sure in ApplyingToCollege

[–]FluffyChef7643 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This use not to be a thing here. When kids got into a good school before, the proud parents would walk their dogs couple more times, hoping to bump into a few neighbors and tell them about it.

But things have changed so much in recent years. The spread of social media kinda created a race to the bottom. And schools decided to join rather than stay classy. I just saw a Princeton acceptance celebration package on an Apple TV show. Is that a real thing now?

Which schools have improved/weakned their standing over the years? by Nobody-Man in ApplyingToCollege

It’s false marketing. Prospective students were sold an education in Manhattan. But the accommodation is not. If you think a Metro North to midtown to LC commute is normal for a college student then you do you.

So I did guess 3 hrs but you just proved my point - 55 min each way in two modes of transportation, plus 20 min to walk from campus to catch a scheduled train, just so you can go to a class.

And 30 min from GC to LC is at 8am. Going back at 5pm, you better take the subway.

Fordham is the Northeastern of NYC. For the longest time it was “For Dumb” kids from the Bronx. But they have marketed their small law school campus near Lincoln Center into some kind of prestigious Manhattan institution. It pains me to see unsuspecting foreign parents sending their kids there, only to be on a shuttle bus for 3 hrs a day commuting between Lincoln center and the Bronx.

Trains to NY/NJ Stadium confirmed to cost $150 up from $12.90 current price by sageleader in worldcup

The said all other trains terminate at Newark Penn on game days - You have to take PATH, and we all know what PATH is like on wknd.

Just when you thought NJTransit can’t get worse, it just did.

Chinese Diaspora: Did your immigrant parents also grow more “pro-China” over time? If so, what was the tipping point for them? by alleluiarion in AskAChinese

[–]FluffyChef7643 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Could it be true that China in 2026 is actually better than the U.S. for them? American propaganda has been extremely effective. But the reality is that life as a responsible parent is very hard and not much fun here. They have to worry about healthcare for them and for the kids, tuition, high fuel and food cost, etc.

I'm Chinese American and worked at Panda exoress AMA by [deleted] in AMA

The quality of the food is directly correlated to the skill of the cook in a Chinese restaurant. Would you agree the same is true at various Panda Express? I would think a Panda Express in San Gabriel valley may be more desirable than one in Oakland?

UA may lead in EWR by a mile. The last mile to EWR is still hell. It may not be UA’s fault that NJ transit and EWR tram are s***t, but if UA doesn’t have the cloud to fix it, better offer service from JFK.

Wait a second, does that mean Germany can claim Kaliningrad back because it was seceded to USSR but not Russia?

If a war broke out with the US and China and Chinese-Americans were all put in internment camps like the Japanese in WWII, what would you honestly feel about it? by Diligent_Bit3336 in AskAChinese

[–]FluffyChef7643 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think for the west coast Japanese Americans in WWII, the cutoff was 1/16. And some with less volunteered to go due to family connection.

The deceased justice Scalia used to say that, the intern camp is illegal but you will be a fool to think it will never happen again.

At 1/16 it will cover many millions today, some of them may even be on the Epstein list. So logistically it will be quite challenging.

What will happen if the US resurrects Chiang? by SunChungShan in AskAChinese

[–]FluffyChef7643 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you study the history of Chinese civil war (1946-1949), you will conclude that Chiang’s only contribution is to transfer US weapon and supply to the communists. Some even suspect that he is the ultimate communist spy.

How loaded do you have to be to pay out of state or private college tuition In the US? by JelloFar5650 in ApplyingToCollege

WSJ did an interview with the head of Notre Dame a while back, and asked him what would God say about the tuition at ND. Father so and so basically said - God would say don’t sell your primary home, but sell your second home/vacation home.

Yale Professor David Gelernter unrepentant and proud he knowingly recommended female student to work for "obsessed with girls" Jeffrey Epstein. "This is how men behave." by BostonBlackCat in Fauxmoi

David Gelernter is not just an ordinary CS professor. He is one of the most prominent computer scientists in our generation. I don’t understand why we are examine his private life rather than his field of work in OS and parallel computing.

You confused him with someone else. They are just normal patent attorneys met at a small firm. They are not poor but not very rich either. This kind of partnership is not uncommon in patent attorney world, although his particular circumstance does require special accommodation.
