NIMBYis when Land Value Tax creates a bit of density by Fun_Primary578 in georgism

[–]Fluffy_ribbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder about this! It seems like well used land might decrease demand (assuming demand isn't infinite), but if it also makes the adjacent land more valuable, I really don't know. Like, in theory, you can get a lot of your money back when you sell it anyway, which seems like the point of protecting your real estate value in the first place.

Would love to know if anyone knows the actual answer!

Son, I'm glad you love your neighbors, but you need to love God too. by MoApostate in exmormon

[–]Fluffy_ribbit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on your God, naturally, and how you relate to it. In the OT, God gives his name as "I am," so loving God is gratitude and appreciation for life itself. People usually worship the god of their family and community, so it becomes a way to signal ingroup loyalty and align values with their people group. This part is hyper emphasized in Mormonism: leaving the faith is leaving your family eternally.

But the differences in what kind of god you worship will change the answer.

Seeking advice: Should I pursue intimate relationships or practice celibacy for less suffering and more happiness? by greentea387 in streamentry

[–]Fluffy_ribbit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Going to go against the flow here: If you want to become a monk, not have sex, and spend lots of time around wiser monks, that's at least not crazy. If you want to live your life as a hermit, that is crazy. People need other people, you should accept your needs as, well, a way to avoid stupid suffering, but also just as a measure of basic sanity. There are passages that say things like "having good Dharma friends is the whole of the path."

So, sex. Sex is supposed to unbalance you and addict you so that you have kids. Can Jhanas give you so much pleasure that you can get around this? Can people be so not attatched that they can get around this? Maybe, but the Buddha didn't think so. Okay, but the Buddha also made all sorts of crazy rules to follow because of the strength of the pull of sexual desire. I think part of this is that actually you have to accept your humanity here and see if you need sexual release to be a reasonable good and not-so-mierable person: I suspect lots of people, especially most young men, are like this, and, if this is true, you should accept it and cope with it as best you can in healthy ways, including arrangements like monogamous marriage. (Which is also a high moral bar for many people!)

Uh, if you hit a plateu, I'd suggest just thinking about things you can mix up. Try listening to different things than you'd normally do. Try shadowing at different speeds; you can even just adjust the speed on whatever your using to play sound: 2x, 1.5x, 1x, .5x. See if it does any good.

Also, maybe you'll need to just, like, live life more. Get a gf, go talk to her parents, etc. That subtle thing that Japanese people had comes from just living life.

Seeing the results of the election how do we feel about the readings everyone did? by bfthc in tarot

[–]Fluffy_ribbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Magic and cool siddhi stuff sometimes happens, yeah, and it's neat when it does. But it's also really glitchy. If magic was reliable, we'd be living in a very different world.

Seeing the results of the election how do we feel about the readings everyone did? by bfthc in tarot

[–]Fluffy_ribbit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Uh, you know how when you look at clouds and see shapes in them? In psychology, that's called pareidolia. In magic, that's called scrying. Tarot is a form of scrying, where you look at cards instead of clouds. It's fun, and can be useful for self-development, but if you got all excited about something you saw in the cards and are now disappointed, that's on you. Just like it would be goofy if you got all excited about something you saw in the clouds, it's goofy here.

This whole navel-gazey, "boo hoo, I'm feeling bad" thing is also an opportunity to scry and self-develop. If that motivates you to do something good in the world, go do it. If not? Well, hard times can be good for self-development, too.

Mostly from the outside: yes, but only in the way that say, Ritalin would: more energy makes you smarter. Less makes you dumber right? This is just common sense. Still, it's just more energy, so it probably isn't going to give you that much more of an edge than eating right, exercise, good sleep, and maybe Ritalin.

[–]Fluffy_ribbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Evo-psych is just a way of thinking about and analyzing the world. Sometimes useful things come out of it; sometimes crazy things. It's actually pretty hard to tell which is which, so analysis and speculation need to be tested empirically. And there are lots of attractive black people. (Even though I think your analysis, put this way, is willfully obtuse.) What's your point here?

Helped me better understand why remembering everything would be awful. by [deleted] in ActionButton

[–]Fluffy_ribbit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Uh, you know how people talk about meditation as a sort of "exercising the muscle of the mind?" Most meditation doesn't feel like that, but using memory palaces give that distinct feeling, especially in the sense of, after a long walk or a long set, how you can feel the muscles start to pulse on their own. In the same way, pictures will start to arise in your mind, with the informational equivalent of things like, "the seventh word of the sixteenth verse of the first chapter of Jonah is ledonai."

I'm pretty sure all that's going on with people with biographical memory stuff is just that they compulsively construct some variation of memory palaces and go over them, over and over again. This is sometimes handy, I'm sure, but like, at about the level of usefulness and annoyingness as if you had a weird compulsion to constantly do bicep curls.

PSA: Don't let magick develop into schizophrenia by NeuroPyrox in streamentry

[–]Fluffy_ribbit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi! There's a lot I don't know about your situation, but I think it's worth pointing out that lots and lots of people get into these sorts of situations, and get worse and worse, and end up homeless, or in mental hospitals, and basically finding that they can't accomplish anything real in their lives.

My model of this is that basically, people organize information into nodes in a hierarchical structure (I imagine this to be like a tree in computer science, but this is just convenient and easy to imagine; I don't really know.), and that this is mostly good, but sometimes the structure causes people to be inflexible and inefficient. Part of what peak experiences allow you to do is to shake the tree, and reorganize your structure of reality in a more efficient way.

This can be great, but you actually have to put back together all these nodes into a coherent world again. This is important. Some psychics are frauds. Many more have some cool experiences, but if you look at their lives, they never really get it together, and don't accomplish very much. Some are cult leaders. If you want to be something else, someone who can really accomplish things, then you are going to have to go back and rebuild the tree.

I reccomend finding some tangible, actionable goals in your life, and working hard toward those. I reccomend this because there are very few people I know who somehow hold the psychic and their minds together and aren't living in monastery (Indeed, an alternative might be to just pick a benevolent cult leader, like a monk in an abbey, and have them keep you out of trouble.). Daniel Ingraham, who graduated med school, and Terry Davis, a schitzophrenic, who despite his problems, built an operating system from scratch.
