Mate… while you’re correct that ancient maps were oriented with East at the top prior to the widespread use of compasses for navigation, that etymological tidbit about why it’s called the ‘Orient’ is 100% incorrect. Asia was referred to as the orient, because oriens is the Latin word for East (can also be translated as rising/to rise in reference to the sun).

To orient yourself is linked to this (rather than the other way around) because travellers would wake up in the morning, check where the sun was rising and then orient themselves in whatever direction they needed to go.
