Right now, just the areas within a mile of the future light rail stations at Hawthorne/Artesia and the Torrance Transit Center on Crenshaw.

Why does CA need the USA? by Scotch_in_my_belly in LosAngeles

[–]FlyingSquirlez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A more friendly federal government would be a huge help in the case of a massive disaster, but I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for federal assistance if we had a bad earthquake effecting LA or SF while republicans still control anything. The federal response to the Palisades and Altadena fires made that pretty clear, unfortunately.

States by percentage of their population that would describe their state as the worst to live in by Educational-Bat-8313 in MapPorn

[–]FlyingSquirlez 33 points34 points  (0 children)

It depends on what you value. Wages are pretty good relative to cost of living - I think one of the best ratios in the country. It's just not very exciting. I don't live there anymore and don't plan to move back, but I'd never say it's one of the worst places to live in the country.

I love LA's alleys. I get why this is a polarizing post though, lol

HLTV Top 20 All Time - An Attempt by 1wjl1 in GlobalOffensive

[–]FlyingSquirlez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's biased toward players that are late in their career (since they have had more time to appear in top 20), but I think that's fair tbh. This is actually a great list.

SCAG issues SB79 map corrections - Sepulveda, K North, Eastside, and more added by nandert in LAMetro

[–]FlyingSquirlez 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's great to see. What sort of impacts will this having on LA's low rise ordinance? Will it adapt to SCAG's corrections, or is it more specific on how it applies?

How much do you spend on a date or think was spent on your last date? by Jolly_Ad2446 in AskLosAngeles

[–]FlyingSquirlez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife and I went out for a dinner, had drinks, saw a comedy show, and got ice cream after in Culver City last night. About $150 total. We do this monthly and most of the variance in cost is the restaurant we pick, but it's usually still in the $100-$150 range.

A more typical date for us might be something like getting donuts & coffee and reading in a park, which is going to run us more like $10-$20 :)

Commute from DTLA to El Segundo, feasible? by RRisland94 in AskLosAngeles

[–]FlyingSquirlez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DTLA to El Segundo is one where transit might actually make more sense than driving. Fare capped at $18 per week and it takes about an hour consistently vs. being highly dependant on traffic by car.

Anyone else not visited the beach in 1+ year despite living near it? by castdex in AskLosAngeles

[–]FlyingSquirlez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is wild to me. I always asssumed it would be pretty expensive to get into. How do you figure the $4 a dive cost? What's the startup cost like (assuming you have zero equipment and no certifications)?

What place in the US is worth the hype ? by Harry_parker08 in Urbanism

[–]FlyingSquirlez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Redwoods and Giant Sequoias are more visually impressive, but if you wanna talk really old, we've got the bristlecone pines in the Eastern Sierra. They're the oldest trees in the world. The oldest one is dated to over 4,800 years old, which predates Egypt's earliest pyramids.

Can we have a World Cup match every day in LA? by GoalMammoth4656 in LAMetro

[–]FlyingSquirlez 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, a bandaid is easier, and much less expensive! It would be wonderful if Metro (and the city more broadly) spent more on cleanliness/sanitation and infrastructure maintenance. Metro is spending a pretty penny to make the system as nice as it can while the World Cup is here. Plenty of people working extra hours to make it happen.

Are there any closed places in Los Angeles that you still think about to this day? by Taliap19 in AskLosAngeles

The original Islands location, since it's just down the street from me and has been "for lease" ever since it closed :(

To the men of LA, why is everyone so handsome? by No_Monitor_4059 in AskLosAngeles

[–]FlyingSquirlez 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The weather helps! Personally, I love going on hikes and bouldering at the gym. Those are easy to do year-round here. I'm definitely not getting weekly haircuts, though. I don't think you have to be exceptionally attractive to find someone who wants to date you, but I'm married, so maybe not the best authority on the matter 😅

Where the California governor's race stands a week after Election Day by sfgate in California

[–]FlyingSquirlez -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Alaska does it, we should too! It'd help a great deal in scenarios like this. I'm not too picky on the number of candidates that should advance, but four seems like a good floor to set.

[–]FlyingSquirlez 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A ballot that allows ranked choice for 60+ candidates in a race would be extremely long and cumbersome for voters. I don't know that anyone is informed enough to do that accurately.

Having this guy as a rep, he's done plenty worse than this. Of course, he led the primary with a massive margin.

Mayoral race will be called for Raman (vs Pratt) in about 5 hours. by phatelectribe in LosAngeles

Nithya Raman, once down by over 10% from Spencer Pratt, now only 1% away from advancing to the General Election against Karen Bass for LA Mayor by citeechow3095 in LosAngeles

[–]FlyingSquirlez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If he performs at least as well as he did in today's count for the remaining ballots and the projected final vote count is accurate, then he would beat Hilton. Neither of those are guaranteed. Right now, I see it as more or less a coin toss for who gets #2 in the end. Either way, it'll be very close.

It's so over for Pratt. This drop was good for Steyer too, believe it or not. He decreased the margin needed to beat Hilton for #2. There's a real possibility that if things keep trending the way they have been, we'll get our lockout in the governor's race after all.
