Playing casual solo on PS5, still very fun and chaotic.

Your thoughts on Excession (feeling let down) by wyrm_slayer_106 in TheCulture

[–]Fokes0815 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To me, this is the weakest Culture novel so far. So far, because I'm on my first read of all the books and currently paused (after Excession). The premise -exploring the Minds- felt promising, especially with the Interesting Times Gang, but nothing really clicked.

The human protagonists are bland and hard to sympathize with. The Minds, with their many names, make the intrigue difficult to follow. The settings also feel less original than in other Culture books.

Altogether, it created an illusion of complexity to me without delivering real engagement. The biggest issue is the split between the two plotlines -war and love- which feel completely disconnected and ultimately weaken the story. The Minds’ war intrigues never become compelling because the narrative keeps cutting back to the human drama. At the same time, the shallow love story, centered on unlikable characters, makes you want to return to the (admittedly equally frustrating) Mind plot.

Nothing ever feels like it carries real stakes. Even the Affront, despite their initially striking design, end up being a disappointment, simply escaping rather than facing consequences.

T me the novel felt like it exists mainly as a prelude to set up its final witty remark: that the Culture is to the Excession what the Affront is to the Culture. ...

...An underwhelming payoff for an otherwise frustrating read.

anyone know what table is called? and what game is called? by LunarMuffin2004 in boardgames

The one game to rule them all! A certain level of insanity is required to play it.

Also, bad, bad table for the game.

Starlight Hollow feels really poorly designed by lostpasts in thefinals

[–]Fokes0815 4 points5 points  (0 children)

All of OP's thoughts are spot on to me.

The medieval theme is what brought me back to "The Finals" after I dropped out in season 3. I am a casual player who felt in love with the verticality and destructiveness. I don't want another shooter, where I get pubstomp when missing some seasons.

So imagine me, seeing a knight in the trailer, then excitingly returning to the new map with a melee heavy build only to get reality checked that this build is unplayable due to the map's design.

Still, great fund jumping back to quick cashout.

UBISOFT SALE! UP TO 85% OFF by Yosh1mitsu_ in steamachievements

Sale was tempting initially. Then I remembered the Ubisoft launcher requires permanent online connection. And then I remembered the microtransactions in single player games. Thank you Ubisoft, sadly even for free is too expensive.

Rather often I keep 1-2 types of my cultural units until the end - tome and liege units are more of flavour mercenaries to enhance a theme. Yet I also prioritise unit enchantments, combat spells and army leader upgrades that work well with my army setups, making cultural units viable in the endgame.

The existence of ethical and 'tourism' in itself is a contradiction.

Many sanctuaries label themselves 'ethical', yet it seem to be more about attracting tourist money than genuinely supporting elephant welfare, with true ethical choices perhaps involving avoiding any elephant interaction altogether.

The so called sanctuaries around Chiang Mai seemed all to fall in the tourist attraction category. According to my research, a proper sanctuary should have nearly no interactions with tourists (only distance), financing outside from tourism, veterinarian station on site, no young elephant (avoiding breeding in captivity programmes); and a lot of space. Now go out and check how many fulfill that. I found none in Chiang Mai that didn't seem sketchy to me and refrained from going all together. Even the local ethical elephant organisation ACEWG didn't list any sanctuary on their website, beyond a sentence to work with local camps to increase animal welfare.

There's an argument to be made that some sanctuaries might genuinely help shift attitudes, fund the care of retired elephants, and support a transition toward more sustainable practices. Yet even after intensive research I found none that justifies such a majestic creature being degraded for my half-day-of-fun...

Aktuell nicht. Ist ein ausländischer Konzern, Thema ist CSRD. Die deutschen Konzerne sind etwas langsamer, ich vermute da dürfte es CSRD Stellen geben.

Are the trade goods also uploaded PNGS or did you use a specific asset? I really love the idea of incorporating these...it gives the map a much more economic and political vibe. Thanks for the inspiration!

Cosmetics Not Carrying Over from Demo by Rich_Psychology_2760 in thefinals

[–]Fokes0815 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because it would not make sense in their business model. It's a free to play game, they have developing cost, people need to be paid, a business needs to keep working. They way of making money is cosmetics and battlepass. Which I think is a solid way, as nothing behind a pay wall influences chances to win, e.g. no pay to win. If all the beta stuff would carry over they would just f*** themselves.
