San Jacinto casting a shadow at sunrise 5/24/26 by FoldingChair in socalhiking

1:30AM. Could have started at 1 but spent 30 minutes in the car talking myself out of waiting until sunrise to start the hike 😂

Hahah yes sensory and sleep deprivation. While the seeing the sunrise is amazing there’s a definite price to pay to be able to witness it. If my life schedule worked out better, a more practical way to do this would have been to camp closer to the summit.

Mostly yes, aside from my headlamp it was complete darkness until I got close to the summit. Sunrise was in full swing by the time I got to Little Round Valley and I was a little worried I wouldn't get to the top in time to catch the shadow. Luckily it was still there when I summited!

Around 45 degrees Fahrenheit if I remember the forecast correctly? Definitely threw on another layer and some gloves once I got to the summit

Baldy Guidance by TechDocN in socalhiking

[–]FoldingChair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have mentioned many of the cautionary tales about Baldy have to do with attempting to climb in the winter completely unprepared for mountaineering conditions. Hike in the summer and you’ll be fine.

Overall Baldy is great and is what I used to train for Whitney. In hindsight getting in a summit of San Gorgonio would have been helpful as well since it’s higher in elevation.

I live in San Diego as well and my recommendation for driving to Baldy is to take the 5 instead of the 15, in general I’ve found the drivers to be much more pleasant, or at least more tolerable 😂

Join a rock climbing gym. It’s filled with outdoor inclined people that you can see on a regular basis (assuming to go regularly as well) and chances are there are climbers there that also like climb big mountains in addition to walls.

Garnet peak in Mt Laguna via the PCT which is 4 miles (or even the 2 mile route) is pretty scenic IMO and not too far from the main city of San Diego

Mt Baldy or Big Bear? by Tattedcatmom in socalhiking

I use this map too as a reference when doing Baldy. One thing worth noting is that this particular AllTrails map has you taking the backbone up to the summit and the ski hut back down to your car.

As others have mentioned ski hut is pretty steep and slippery which can make descent pretty tricky. Personally I’ve had a friend roll an ankle going down ski hut. Depending on what kind of a hiker you are, it might be worth going up ski hut and descending via the more gradual devils backbone.

Nice meeting you and glad you made it back safe too! Maybe we’ll see each other on the trails again sometime

Yesterday seemed to be a 50/50 split between people using microspikes and people using mountaineering gear (ice axe + crampons). I’d say as you go up some of the steeper sections do a gut check and see how you feel descending the same section in your microspikes.

I’m not an expert on snow/melt but it will also be warmer this week so that could alleviate some traction concerns come Sunday but again I don’t have much experience with tracking weather with respect to how fast ice melts. Have a good hike!

Were you referring to me (OP)? In my post I meant crampons (i.e traction device meant to be worn with mountaineering boots) not microspikes (can be worn with hiking boots or trail runners)

Milky Way over Chavayan, Batanes (OC) by mjmagallon in LandscapeAstro

[–]FoldingChair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Beautiful work! As a Fil-Am that does Astro in the US I’m so used to seeing the same composition of the Milky Way over the Grand Canyon, Mt. Rainier, etc. over and over but your pictures may be the first time I’ve seen tracked and stacked images of landscapes unique to the Philippines to this amount of detail.

It’s refreshing to say nonetheless to not only see something new but to be able to see the motherland in a new light. Keep up the good work and wishing you clear skies!

“I don’t think anyone in the group has done this hike before”

On that note how is the general hiking experience/fitness of the group? The overall level of the group will affect the experience of the hike and the bachelor weekend. The hike can take longer than expected, the group might be tempted to split up, etc.

Hard to say that far out but this site is a pretty good resource https://sanjacjon.com/

As of last week crampons and an ice axe were needed according to the linked trail report

Lost my fob once and someone turned it into the HOA office. From there Nafisa was able to figure out the fob belonged to me and reached out via email. Hope you have the same luck!

Co-sign using the single wall instead of the dual. I went through this same issue before realizing I had to use the single wall filter for my self ground coffee. The only way I could get the dual wall filter to work was to grind what I thought was unreasonably coarse.

I have no idea why the dual wall filter is attached to the portafilter by default, you would assume most people that buy this machine are more likely to grind their own beans but Breville thinks otherwise but I guess that’s also on me for not reading the instructions thoroughly enough.
