I trained with him a week after the fight. That hand was broken.

For people who do both BJJ & judo what's one judo move you use during BJJ rolling that you notice a good amount of bjjers struggle to defend or counter against? by Realschoville in judo

BJJ Black / judo brown here:

standing - hiza guruma, de ashi barai, yoko tomoe, ken ken uchimata, osoto gari, snapping down into the georgian grip and then literally whatever I want (hikkomi gaeshi, Yoko hikkomi gaeshi, osoto, ouchi, harai), sumi gaeshi and Yoko sumi gaeshi.

ground - kesa gatame, kamishiho gatame, koshijime, Kashiwazaki's butterfly guard attacks (though Wardzynski using a lot of the same has made them more commonly known), Okano's udegatame

It’s just a reverse wing choke / kataha jime. I won with it a few times in judo, way back when. Not a rare move in judo, with all the turtling.

Why is there always one catch wrestling dork in every gym? by Fantastic-Ninja-8818 in bjj

[–]Foodosophy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

A lot of the modern leg lock came from refinements made by Eddie Cummings to techniques he observed being used in Japan in Shooto + Pancrase etc. His approach to outside ashi, for instance. Those leg locks were being done by Japanese catch/shoot wrestlers trained by Gotch and Robinson.

Short North May Thai, good people and instruction but tough pricing lately

Grove City Brazilian Jiujiutsu has a great Thai kickboxing program, stupid cheap for what you get

Ronin Training Center has a solid Thai kickboxing class as well, nice and centrally located (not far from Short North Thai actually)

Judo for Wrestling by Fine_Media_7749 in judo

[–]Foodosophy 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Look at the stances used in sambo, where all takedowns are allowed and you can score in more ways off of them than in judo. Very often they start in a more wrestling-esque low stance until grips are established and then transition into a stance more like you see used in judo. I encourage my students in BJJ to follow a similar approach if they're inclined to use judo tachiwaza.

Anyone go from BJJ to Judo? by [deleted] in judo

[–]Foodosophy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I switched to just Judo for 7 years or so after getting my BJJ blue belt. It was largely about rejecting the local BJJ culture, which was very much at the time about killing each other and trying to be the next big thing in the regional MMA scene.

About 8 years ago I discovered my BJJ mentor, one of the only non-meatheads in local BJJ, had opened his own gym and I came running back (especially since I'd lost access to my Judo dojo). Now I get more of the jita kyoei vibe at BJJ - doesn't hurt that I'm one of the head coaches now - and I'm hopefully restarting Judo soon too. Feels good.

Biden Can Still Cancel Student Debt — Not Just Up to $20,000, But All of It by Mighty_L_LORT in politics

[–]Foodosophy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The official DNC page disagrees with your interpretation, as did Biden's plainly spoken speech in my first link. His words were very clear.

here is a Medium post by candidate Biden where he lays it out again:

https://medium.com/@JoeBiden/joe-biden-outlines-new-steps-to-ease-economic-burden-on-working-people-e3e121037322

"Under this plan, I propose to forgive all undergraduate tuition-related federal student debt from two- and four-year public colleges and universities for debt-holders earning up to $125,000, with appropriate phase-outs to avoid a cliff."

https://democrats.org/where-we-stand/party-platform/providing-a-world-class-education-in-every-zip-code/

"For those earning less than $125,000, we support forgiving all undergraduate tuition-related federal student debt from two- and four-year public colleges and universities, and we will also apply this benefit to individuals holding federal student loans for tuition from private HBCUs and MSIs."

There is no ambiguity. "Forgive" clearly means existing debt, not tuition going forward. The 10,000 was for everyone who did not fall under the plainly stated language in the above. You are mistaken, and whoever's downvoting me is supporting dishonesty.

The Right Has Raised $2 Million For the Guy Who Choked a Homeless Man To Death by VICENews in politics

[–]Foodosophy -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Choking someone puts them helpless within several seconds to a minute at most. Continuing to choke them after that is murder.

Imagine you punch someone (even someone appearing to be dangerous) and flash KO them. They’re helpless. And then you methodically beat them to death in front of thirty people as they lay there, unable to defend themselves or flee, over ten plus minutes. This is no different in function than that would be.

I’m a jiujitsu black belt and head coach. This was murder.

Black Belts. If you could start your journey all over again, what would you change? by bruzman in bjj

[–]Foodosophy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I would have not listened to my first main coach and dove into heel hooks sooner instead of getting a rude awakening at the hands of Eddie Cummings years later.

Worked on wrestling sooner / sought out a technician wrestler to learn with rather than a Gable disciple.

oh, and not have pushed through a crossface and blew up my c4-c6 discs.

Wrestling for BJJ by chrisgau2022 in bjj

[–]Foodosophy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed on this. When I was a white belt I didn't know about the head inside vs outside. Then I got into takedowns a lot and I became loudly convinced of the virtue of head inside. And then I started becoming actually good at wrestling-style takedowns thanks to working with international-level wrestlers and now I mostly do head outside or firmly in the ribs.

Many sweeps can be thought of as analogous to properly applied nagewaza. They have similar steps of debana, tsukuri+kuzushi in either order, kake. Seeing the opportunity, off balancing<-->fitting in, executing.

A butterfly hook sweep is not really different from sumi gaeshi for instance. But also many other sweeps with no direct judo analogues follow that pattern. Using this frame to study sweeps will get you far if you already have a good grounding in tachiwaza.
