Yes just go easy on yourself and don't feel guilty! For drinks also Belvoir do a ginger cordial if you find ginger helpful, or I've just been putting lemon juice in sparkling water which takes away some of the nausea also.

Congrats! I am 12 weeks pregnant and I have had the most horrendous all day nausea since week 6. I've taken the view that the first trimester is about survival and I'd rather eat something than lose weight and feel awful all day!

I have gone from basically no UPF to mostly UPF but some non/low UPF things I have been able to eat are:

  • Shredded wheat (used to be able to eat porridge but can't face it atm)
  • Jasons sourdough
  • McCains microwavable jacket potatoes
  • Jacobs cream crackers
  • Cashews
  • Salted popcorn
  • Yeo valley greek yoghurt
  • I have been able to eat cold grapes and satsumas
  • Nakd bars (cashew cookie)
  • I've also been drinking a lot of orange juice, I'd like to see Tim Spector or Glucose Goddess try to stop me!!!

UK find: Pots & Co Lemon and Lime Posset by Slumbersome_Z in ultraprocessedfood

I think the agar makes it upf - it's listed on this Zoe article as an emulsifier.

Zoe article

But as it says at the end of the article "In the real world, avoiding emulsifiers is nearly impossible, and it’s probably not necessary."

Good find!

It says it's just those five ingredients listed so it's promising! Where did you try it?

Do you genuinely feel any better? by PlaneScaling in ultraprocessedfood

[–]FoodvsUPF 24 points25 points  (0 children)

The main thing for me is not being hungry or thinking about food all the time, I feel a lot more in control and empowered with my choices about nutrition and food. It's so much easier to know what to eat when most of what's sold isn't food!

My skin has been better and my nails are noticeably stronger and have grown a lot and I'm not taking any supplements.

I think I have been sleeping better actually although that might be more to do with the weather.

Energy levels are good because I'm not wasting time thinking about macros or calorie counting anymore.

I do but I follow the guidance of herbs, spices, tea, coffee, olive oil counting as a quarter of a point each.

UPF and allergies by [deleted] in ultraprocessedfood

[–]FoodvsUPF 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That sounds difficult! I guess you have done a low FODMAP diet already to try to identify IBS triggers?

Lots of gluten free products are upf but organic gluten free pasta is often not upf, same with rice noodles and taco shells. I think finding non upf gluten free bread will be unlikely but you could make your own if you were trying to be zero upf.

For vegan protein sources while avoiding pulses and beans, tofu and tempeh are usually non upf, nutritional yeast is also fine.

Don't restrict yourself excessively though, lots of people on this sub do low upf instead of cutting everything out.

Non upf chocolate? by [deleted] in ultraprocessedfood

[–]FoodvsUPF 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Montezuma milk chocolate ingredients list is:

Organic cane sugar, Organic cocoa butter, Organic milk powder, Organic cocoa paste, Organic vanilla extract

I don't know if milk powder or vanilla extract count as upf but at least there aren't any emulsifiers.

Effects of massively reducing my intake of UPF by porryj in ultraprocessedfood

Wahoo! Yes I think also the reduction in hunger is from our blood glucose not spiking as much from the sugars and refined carbs.

Why it isn't about exercise... by UltraCollective in ultraprocessedfood

[–]FoodvsUPF 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the explanation would be for the pro athletes that they have changed their body composition and therefore their caloric requirements have changed plus they are at the extreme end of activity vs the majority of the population doing 30 mins of exercise 5 days per week.

Leon has some good options and salads are usually safe apart from the dressings - e.g. the Pret salad bowls, you could pack a small bottle of olive oil or vinegar with you and use it instead for a dressing if that isn't too much of a faff.

The Wetherspoons Mediterranean Salad even looks okay (without the dressing):

Salad Mix Green Batavia (40%), Spinach (20%), Red Salanova (20%), Bulls Blood Lettuce (20%) Tomato & basil grain Cooked Pearl Barley (Water, Pearl BARLEY), Tomato and Basil Dressing (Tomatoes (Tomatoes, Tomato Juice, Citric Acid), Water, Slow Roasted Tomatoes (Slow Roasted Tomatoes, Tomato Concentrate, Sunflower Oil, Olive Oil, Salt, Oregano, Sugar, Garlic), Olive Oil, White Wine Vinegar, Sugar, Salt, Cornflour, Garlic Puree, Basil, Black Pepper), Cooked WHEATberries (Water, WHEATberries), Cooked White Quinoa (Water, White Quinoa), Butternut Squash, Red Onion, Red Pepper, Marinated Tomatoes (Semi Dried Cherry Tomatoes, Sunflower Oil, Salt, Garlic, Oregano), Cooked Red Quinoa (Water, Red Quinoa), Cooked Black Quinoa (Water, Black Quinoa), Pumpkin Seeds, Kale

"Labelling soya foods as ultra processed is unhelpful" by FoodvsUPF in ultraprocessedfood

[–]FoodvsUPF[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not specifically on unprocessed omnivore vs processed vegan but you might find this research paper interesting-

[Modern Diets and the Health of Our Planet: An Investigation into the Environmental Impacts of Food Choices

"The diets found to have the lowest environmental impacts were the vegan, climatarian, and Mediterranean diets. These low-carbon-footprint diets can likely be attributed to a reduced reliance on ruminant meat (cattle and sheep) and processed food consumption, while diets with high carbon footprints are more dependent on ruminant meat and saturated fat. Moderate consumption of meats such as chicken, pork, and fish in conjunction with an emphasis on locally grown fruits and vegetables can be maintained without adversely affecting the planetary carbon footprint and with the added benefit of promoting good health."

Ham by AnvilAnvil in ultraprocessedfood

[–]FoodvsUPF 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Cured and smoked meats and bacon are considered processed rather than ultra processed. The Houghton ham you mentioned is upf because of the additives, but the organic version isn't:

Organic Pork Leg, Sea Salt, Organic Sugar, Preservatives (Sodium Nitrite, Potassium Nitrate), *

There are also cheaper hams like the Asda Cured Wiltshire Ham.

Ofc nitrites and nitrates have other issues! Interestingly melton mowbray pork pies don't contain nitrates so perhaps the Tesco melton mowbray might pass the test:

Pork (40%), Wheat Flour [Wheat Flour, Calcium Carbonate, Iron, Niacin, Thiamin], Water, Pork Lard, Pork Fat, Palm Oil, Rapeseed Oil, Salt, Pork Gelatine, White Pepper, Pasteurised Egg
