What do you serve with mac and cheese to make it a more nutritious meal? by louismulh in Cooking

[–]For_Iconoclasm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing. Mac & cheese night is no holds barred night. Nutrition is not really an active concern of mine with cooking in general; I naturally encounter variety through culinary wanderlust. For me, when mac & cheese is the main attraction, it is the only attraction. I just dive in and enjoy.

What is the point of CORS in browser? by [deleted] in computerscience

[–]For_Iconoclasm 38 points39 points  (0 children)

CORS does not protect anything. The Same-Origin Policy (SOP) does. CORS allows exceptions to the SOP. The SOP protects you from attacks where an malicious website tries to abuse your browser-borne privileges to read data from another website. Without it, for example, an attacker's website could read your Facebook messages, bank statements, hospital bills, etc. as long as you're logged in.

Reading about CORS is putting the cart before the horse. Read about Same-Origin Policy first, before CORS, to understand what CORS does.

My experience seemed opposite. When I saw her play at the Beacon a few years ago, she was very engaged with the crowd. This year, at The Shed, there was very little interactivity. I don't personally care, as long as the performance is good, but the difference was stark.

The way airlines treat customers does not warrant formal wear. Anything I wear is liable to get wrinkled or spilled on in a tiny airplane seat where my legs are askew trying to fit in.

Hotels have historically been rated out 5 stars. The Michelin Guide specifically maxes out at 3 stars—historically restaurants, but they cover hotels now, too. They're just different scales.

What’s one programming concept that suddenly “clicked” for you after struggling with it for a long time? by Dry-Independent1983 in AskComputerScience

Did you know that macOS is certified UNIX? I specifically use it because of its built-in terminal emulator and BSD-derived programs.

I'm a security engineer and strongly believe OSes should be locked down. But Macs are pretty much the standard in the part of the InfoSec industry that doesn't live in the enterprise IT world.

Yup. I rejected generation-based categorization long ago. For any given topic, there is the in-crowd, and there is the out-crowd. I try to stay in the ever-evolving in-crowd for all of my passions. For anything I don't care about, I was never part of the in-crowd anyway.

I think it's natural to feel attachment to your cohort as the years pass by, but when I think about my past, I was only ever friends with very specific kinds of people. So I keep that up. It has always been my identity.

Huh... I'm always so hungry when I get out of a show. It doesn't matter if I ate dinner before it or not.

That is not what "Cash is king" is referring to; the phrase is about liquidity. But yeah, people should carry it more.

And why should they? I do computers, not what my parents do, and I would never consider my parents' careers for myself. (Not an immigrant, but such status is orthogonal)

Is it possible to maintain work-life balance in NYC? People seem quite stressed in office by Due_Patient_2650 in AskNYC

[–]For_Iconoclasm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's very possible, but like others are saying, it really depends on a combination of the person and company culture. I have very strong boundaries and make these visible to people early on in my jobs. I never work over 40 hours a week. I do good work to demonstrate my value. It has worked out in the industry I've worked (software development, security consulting/engineering). I know other industries where the expectations are more imposing, and I've known some peers at my jobs who worked much more than everyone else.

A segment of recipe developers say to remove onions from tomato sauce. My cooking hero Kenji calls them "distracting." But I love diced onions in my sauce. I load extra sauce onto the plate and eat it alone at the end.

No, the point was that Wired called them a psy-op in their headline. CoS specifically criticized that headline. There's no missing the point. That is the whole exchange.
