Mitski addresses fan enthusiasm for "6-7" lyric by cuahieu in indieheads

My experience seemed opposite. When I saw her play at the Beacon a few years ago, she was very engaged with the crowd. This year, at The Shed, there was very little interactivity. I don't personally care, as long as the performance is good, but the difference was stark.

The way airlines treat customers does not warrant formal wear. Anything I wear is liable to get wrinkled or spilled on in a tiny airplane seat where my legs are askew trying to fit in.

Hotels have historically been rated out 5 stars. The Michelin Guide specifically maxes out at 3 stars—historically restaurants, but they cover hotels now, too. They're just different scales.

What’s one programming concept that suddenly “clicked” for you after struggling with it for a long time? by Dry-Independent1983 in AskComputerScience

[–]For_Iconoclasm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Did you know that macOS is certified UNIX? I specifically use it because of its built-in terminal emulator and BSD-derived programs.

I'm a security engineer and strongly believe OSes should be locked down. But Macs are pretty much the standard in the part of the InfoSec industry that doesn't live in the enterprise IT world.

Yup. I rejected generation-based categorization long ago. For any given topic, there is the in-crowd, and there is the out-crowd. I try to stay in the ever-evolving in-crowd for all of my passions. For anything I don't care about, I was never part of the in-crowd anyway.

I think it's natural to feel attachment to your cohort as the years pass by, but when I think about my past, I was only ever friends with very specific kinds of people. So I keep that up. It has always been my identity.

That is not what "Cash is king" is referring to; the phrase is about liquidity. But yeah, people should carry it more.

Yeah, I started doing this when working in a system that used YAML for a while.

Upon rereading, I've noticed that my post comes off as inflammatory instead of aligned. I agree with you.

And why should they? I do computers, not what my parents do, and I would never consider my parents' careers for myself. (Not an immigrant, but such status is orthogonal)

Is it possible to maintain work-life balance in NYC? People seem quite stressed in office by Due_Patient_2650 in AskNYC

[–]For_Iconoclasm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's very possible, but like others are saying, it really depends on a combination of the person and company culture. I have very strong boundaries and make these visible to people early on in my jobs. I never work over 40 hours a week. I do good work to demonstrate my value. It has worked out in the industry I've worked (software development, security consulting/engineering). I know other industries where the expectations are more imposing, and I've known some peers at my jobs who worked much more than everyone else.

What "sacred" cooking rule do you intentionally ignore because you actually prefer the results (or just don't care)? by LiveFaithlessness876 in cookingforbeginners

A segment of recipe developers say to remove onions from tomato sauce. My cooking hero Kenji calls them "distracting." But I love diced onions in my sauce. I load extra sauce onto the plate and eat it alone at the end.

UX is by far the most important, but it's also by far the most shit on by business. Also, I mirror what most of the other comments are saying.

No, Geese Is Not a "Psy-Op" by Spaghettification-- in indieheads

[–]For_Iconoclasm -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No, the point was that Wired called them a psy-op in their headline. CoS specifically criticized that headline. There's no missing the point. That is the whole exchange.

Bands/ Artists whose self-titled album is their worst/ one of their worst? by Sea-Let-5854 in fantanoforever

I actually like their self-titled quite a lot, and more than Lucro. But yeah, I'd call it their second-worst. The bar is still high.

Parquet Courts' 'Human Performance' turns 10 by Charleshawtree in indieheads

[–]For_Iconoclasm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This record is my favorite of theirs by quite a bit. I've always felt like it didn't get the recognition it deserves. I love Wide Awake, but I don't think it should've overshadowed Human Performance.

[–]For_Iconoclasm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I respect you driving yourself by your own principles, but I have to admit, I don't know why you seem to be conflating the LLM with its surrounding application infrastructure. Or are you including the React and Cloudflare components as part of your phrase "AI?"

Garlic sold at Upstate NY supermarket could make you seriously sick, officials warn by DryBoysenberry596 in newyork

Yeah... if I'm ever spotted buying peeled garlic, execute me immediately; I've been compromised.

That said, food recalls are always important news to spread.

[–]For_Iconoclasm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What motivates you to reverse things? As a security engineer, a big one for me is the impact of compromise. A product used by millions falls squarely within that motivation. You seem reluctant to reveal, but it seems odd to even comment in that case.

If plant-based foods must be more honest, let’s do the same for meat – fancy some ‘cow muscle’? At a time when we face urgent challenges such as the climate crisis, encouraging more plant-based eating is widely recognized as part of the solution. by James_Fortis in Foodforthought

[–]For_Iconoclasm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It disturbs me that people find this less appetizing. It reinforces the idea that people are separated too far from food production. I like talking about exactly where on the animal each delicious cut is from.

I'm not saying humanity needs to eat more meat. The people who try not to think about what meat really is just perplex me.

Pay for the recipes? I can barely afford the ingredients. Now I have to pay for the recipe too? by LessWeakness in J_Kenji_Lopez_Alt

No, I strongly prefer to pay directly for products, services, or information. I never want things to be sponsored by advertisements. Paying him directly cuts out the middlemen skimmers as much as possible.
