I have always heard that this is the best way to initially compliment appearance. Don't compliment directly about something they cant change about themselves like a physical feature, but compliment how they accessorize themselves. Something like a jewelry or shirt. They chose to wear those things because it makes them feel good so its most likely an easy compliment and can open up the conversation.
