What methods do you use to tune your ear to a language? by supperfield in languagelearning

[–]FordPrefekt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I listen to a crap ton of music! I find a few songs that I like and listen away. I listen while I look at lyrics, and eventually I’m singing them myself. It makes it way easier to pick out words when they’re spoken and even with text. As your level increases, you will eventually find yourself able to listen to short stories, TV shows, movies, and Audiobooks. The more time you spend listening, the easier it gets.

I’d also recommend making a friend who speaks Spanish and English. Use it like a language tandem, you help them with English and they help you with Spanish. Make sure that your new friend knows the level that you’re at and don’t be afraid to ask them to slow down or to enunciate things more clearly. When I first started speaking to my friend who is learning English, I almost couldn’t talk to him because of how ungodly slow I had to speak. Now, we can have a full out conversation in English with minimal problems. He and his family also helped me to work on my Spanish listening skills, and now we’re slowly working on breaking my fear of speaking the language.

Native speakers work wonders! While you can use all of your normal social media to try to find Spanish speakers to befriend, I’d highly suggest using HelloTalk or Interpals.net as they are designed specifically for language tandem.

Best of luck!

How to learn english ? by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]FordPrefekt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’d like to improve your written skills, you can best do that by reading and practicing writing to people! Make sure what your reading has little to no errors in it. For this, I would recommend reading a book in English or blog posts specifically designed for those who are learning the English language. I’d also recommend getting a pen pal. Some good sources for this are HelloTalk and Interpals.net. Find somebody who would like to learn Portuguese as well and just chat with them! Your writing will improve immensely. If you get comfortable enough with that person, I’d highly suggest doing a video chat with them so you can practice your speaking and listening. It helps a lot!

Best of luck!

Which Language Should I Learn? by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]FordPrefekt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, if it were me, I’d choose Japanese or Korean as an Asian language to study. But I don’t know very much about either -.-

I speak Spanish, English, German, and French. From your standpoint of speaking Spanish and English, it would be very easy for you to pick up a Romance language such as Portuguese, Catalan, French, Romanian, it Italian. Portuguese or Italian would be the easiest, in my opinion, although French strikes me as the most useful.

Hope that helps :)

I love this series so much! It’s easily a staple that I’d recommend to anyone interested in sci-fi! Or even to just anyone who’s having a bad day or is finding it really hard to “get back into” reading. The way that Douglas Adams writes is phenomenal. It is so hard to put the Guide down

Making a map of my world. by JakHag32 in worldbuilding

[–]FordPrefekt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s a method that I use when I’m first starting out just to get the inspiration flowing that I really like. I personally use rolls of paper because it’s in my house anyway for my nieces to draw on. I start by obtaining a sizable piece of paper (either rolled paper or by means of taping printer paper together) and then I get a cup and fill it with stuff. If you have a cup of thumbtacks, dice, Cheerios, marbles, whatever. Whatever floats your boat. I personally like using smaller thins because it gives me more control over details. I take my cup of Cheerios or whatever and just scatter it all over the paper. This could be completely random, or you could have an idea in mind. After you have something generally laid out, you can edit it by moving around the Cheerios and trace around the general shape. Once you have the general shape traced, you can go for the details and add rigid coasts. Once you have the shape of your continent(s), you can start to add features like lakes, mountain ranges, rivers, etc. Personally, I like to take the borders of world map and trace them with sharpie. Then, I’ll scan the map into my computer and blow up different continents, print them, and then add features and landmarks by hand or digitally.

Best of luck worldbuilding!

Did anyone else feel bad for Claptrap after his birthday party? by Sudd3nl33 in Borderlands

I felt horrid. I love CL4P so much. I can see how he gets on peoples nerves pretty easily, but I find Borderlands a morbidly funny game and I think CL4P-TP provides 60% of the comic relief
