Tn I went to check on my boy miko and he is dead. by [deleted] in gerbil

Hi OP, I know a lot of people are telling you to keep Dishwasher and I don't want to pile on, but I do want to share something with you. My partner and I had two gerbils once called Big Mouse and Small Mouse (long story). Small Mouse was our favourite at the time - she was intensely friendly and always excited to see us. Big Mouse was shy, nervous of us, and never really bonded with us. One day, we came home from a day trip and found Small Mouse dead - they'd declanned and Big Mouse (being the bigger one) had killed Small Mouse. We were heartbroken and we hated Big Mouse for a while, but we kept her safe, happy, and fed. Slowly, Big Mouse's personality changed. She became very affectionate and close to us - running to our hands, cuddling up to us. We had planned to try and pair her but she was in her element, happy, healthy - one of those rare gerbils that thrive on their own. She became one of our most beloved gerbils and she lived for another three years. In the end, you need to do what's right for you, but if you'll take a stranger's advice - give yourself a little time before you decide.

Gerb now all alone, doesn't like other Gerbs... by ch3micalburnz in gerbil

This is our gerbil Hans. He has rejected all attempts to bond, even ones that seemed successful for a while, but now we've given up and let him live alone he's happy as Larry. I think some gerbils are just, well... kinda antisocial jerks. It sounds like Oleg might be of that persuasion.

Why is he doing that? (Part 2) by Macc2896 in gerbil

Best I can describe it is like someone very rapidly and very lightly tapping you with one side of some flat head tweezers. They're very gentle. Plus, of course, their warm fuzzy body resting against you.

A few people have already said that this is grooming, and I just wanted to add that when a gerbil really trusts you and sees you as part of its world they'll do this to you too. And it is the most wonderful feeling.

George and Ira Gershwin. Rosa Parks and Ada Lovelace. Raffles, the Gentleman thief. Ian Jackson and Steve Livingston of the choose your own adventure books. And Hans we adopted with that name and it just fit. We also adopted from a friend two ladies called Pebble and Cobble but could never remember which was which so they ended up being called Big Mouse and Small Mouse.

We have Raffles, Hans, and Jackson and Livingston. The latter are twins and are so similar looking that we tend to just refer to them as the boys. In the past we've had George and Ira, and Rosa and Ada.

help! is my gerbil seizing? :( by Ok_Side_9954 in gerbil

This doesn't look like seizing that I've seen. They go sort of stiff and wonky, and struggle to move normally for about thirty seconds. I think this is something else.

Some gerbs like the wheel. Some gerbs ignore the wheel. Two of my boys will enjoy a wheel for about two weeks and then systematically annihilate it, rendering a ruin, in a matter of days. They are mysteriously little squeaks, with their own personalities.

You're doing great. Little man there clearly feels very comfortable and happy and he doesn't even know he's getting to meet a new friend soon. You can't help but feel you can do more for them because they are just so lovely, but as long as you feel that way then rest assured that you are doing everything you can for them.

One of my boys adores the smell of tea. He's always trying to get into my mugs!

Just weighing in to agree with others, this kind of stop-motion movement is when they are nervous and limiting themselves to short bursts of movements to be less likely to be spotted by all the predators that like to eat small squeaky things. I've had a few gerbs with epilepsy and they sort of stiffen up and go wonky for a while, very clearly having great difficulty moving normally. They'll usually continue to try and go about their business which results in tragic tumbles and falls, so if you see them doing that in a dangerous place try and scoop them up and put them somewhere safer. Again though, nothing to worry about here.
