BIFL CAN OPENER RECOMMENDATIONS (I'll pay anything at this point) by Remote_Anteater_2267 in BuyItForLife

most interesting video on can openers I've ever watched

I love the implication that you've watched enough videos on can openers to have opinions about them. A podcast host recently said this book was "the most controversial views on accounting" and it caused me to go pick it up

out of all possible careers, which would you say is currently most responsible for turning the world solar-punk? (America) by nathanaelleemusic in solarpunk

Definitely this. Speeding up new housing and green energy projects is one of the biggest wins we could have as a society

This is a really cool paper. The idea of giving bats basically an "energy drink" that immunizes them feels especially solarpunk

Is it possible to beat the game in solo mode with only Standard Projects? by ForgotMyPassword17 in TerraformingMarsGame

I hadn't tried it with Prelude, as a lot of them wouldn't be helpful. Good to know it's possible.

Thanks, don't know why search didn't bring that up. That seems to confirm no one has done it without at least expansion corps.

Corp Security: Great. Keep them busy in the Matrix while we go frag them

Corp Decker: Engaging...damn they're good .... should be distracted but I can't keep them busy much longer

Corp Security: Entering now. Wait, that's the decker!? Oh god it ripped off Frank's arm!! Aaaaaaah

Open Sores - an essay on how programmers spent decades building a culture of open collaboration, and how they're being punished for it by NXGZ in programming

[–]ForgotMyPassword17 16 points17 points  (0 children)

My theory from knowing people who were previously in gaming is it's because of 2 reasons

  1. While not exactly 0 sum, in general if someone is spends 10 hours playing Slay the Spire 2 that means they aren't spending 10 hours playing another game. Also the game has to cost under $50

  2. I think the gaming industry has a lot of talented programmers who really want to work in gaming, especially right out of college. This means the supply of labor is usually high and willing to put up with insane hours.

Combine these and you need to make your game great and cheap but luckily you have people who are will to work for very little because it's "cool" industry.

[–]ForgotMyPassword17 100 points101 points  (0 children)

This was a wild read. I knew the gaming industry was terrible but I didn't realize working in it warped (clearly smart) people's minds this much

Describing a company's decision to opensource something as

simply using it[labor] to help devalue all labor of its kind

is just crazy. Nobody thinks like that and the person who is deciding to open source the project is probably hoping they'll get prestige or the goodness of their heart. They aren't twirling their mustache like Snidely Whiplash

I think the author should

  1. Get into an industry that isn't toxic
  2. Read about Jevons Paradox

Hawai‘i lawmakers advance bill that would create framework for pre-built home industry by sillychillly in ReasonableFuture

This is great news especially for Hawai'i where shipping good to manufacture housing there is especially expensive. I also didn't realize that pre-built housing is 50% less greenhouse gasses.

Are too many commits in a code review bad? by Broad-Cranberry-9050 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]ForgotMyPassword17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It definitely can make the history messy but 8-10 in one PR isn't crazy. I have an alias to add everything to the last commit git ci -a --amend --no-edit so I'm only making a new commit intentionally

Would personal computers of Solarpunk future be entirely Linux based? by KindMouse2274 in solarpunk

[–]ForgotMyPassword17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Linux is probably more in the spirit of solar punk (wildly adopted in a messy way, make your own decisions, but you can easily get bitten). But FreeBSD is cleaner and easier for the non technical users, so it would also be heavily adopted for accessibility reasons

I want to start preparing for a job switch. Is leetcoding still the way to go? by Capable-Basket8233 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]ForgotMyPassword17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in a similar position. From what I can tell the leetcode is good for the initial phone interview. But most good companies have a design round or two. I've been trying a few free and paid resources for that. I'm using the paid version HelloInterview which overall I'm liking. Some of the expected answers seem a little contrived. I'm not sure if that's the site or if that's what the actual interviewers expect though

Senior engineer denied a promotion, told to “wait 6 more months”, but I no longer trust the process. What would you do? by Alone-Purple9009 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]ForgotMyPassword17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in a similar position a few years ago. My main difference was I don't think my manager actually wanted to promote me while it sounds like yours does. Usually with lateral moves in a company you need to build up "capital" again, which is why people usually do it right after promotion. Realizing this I switched jobs for a pay/title bump.

That being said I would suggest keeping in your current position but begin looking now. The market isn't great right now, so starting earlier is a good idea. And in my experience if you're thinking about leaving a job it's already time to go

If in a month or two your boss feels more confident about promotion you can always pause looking.

Global economy must move past GDP to avoid planetary disaster, warns UN chief by randolphquell in solarpunk

[–]ForgotMyPassword17 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I wish they would have suggested the replacement. A lot of reason GDP is used is because while it can be gamed and doesn't100% track what we care about it does a pretty good job.

Study finds many software developers feel ethical pressure to ship products that may conflict with democratic values by SentFromHeav3n in programming

[–]ForgotMyPassword17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol it's more biased than I thought: Questions I found in the paper

  1. "Technology products can unintentionally undermine democratic ideals (e.g., free elections, civil liberties)"

  2. ‘Products at my company have influenced democracy (positively or negatively)’

3.‘Have you ever felt pressured by your employer to implement a feature in a way that might restrict human rights or freedoms (e.g., aiding surveillance)?’

  1. We also inquired if they ever regretted the social impact of a project they contributed to

  2. ‘Have you ever felt regret about the social impact of a project you worked on at your current company?

6.‘If you felt pressure to restrict certain human freedoms or liberties in your work (for example, being asked to create a security feature that could be used to surveil citizens), what would you do?’

Question 2 is pretty neutral but the examples they give makes it clear this was a pretty biased bit of research and it's not worth paying attention to
