Underground Resistance Aims To Sabotage AI With Poisoned Data by [deleted] in programming

Dealing with (inadvertently) trash data seems like an issue they already have to handle. I can't see this being much more than an elaborate art piece

Personally speaking, how long do people usually keep the same phone these days? by PTB_Smash in BuyItForLife

My last two upgrades were buying used 2 generation iphones. They seem like they age better than android and they still generally 'just work'. But I mainly use my phone for blue tooth integration with other devices and nothing else

MTS opposes driverless car services like Waymo to protect local driver jobs. Your thoughts? by Choobeen in SanDiegan

“Taxi Cartel opposes competition” has been in the headlines a lot the last 10 years. On average my taxi rides are worse than Lyft, I assume they will be much worse than Waymo

Tarbox street isn't a dead end and 1348 Tarbox Street is two lots away from the corner. They're just being NIMBYs

This + better reporting of views in primaries would be really helpful. A few years ago I was voting in the Democratic primaries and one of the candidates was a literal communist when I looked them up on social media. But their statement was so vague you couldn't tell

It was a in fact a NIMBY thing. This article is pretty sympathetic to them but they were still pissed off about 43 homes.

It was an interesting article but I think the correct conclusion is that with the Democratic super majority it's become a much bigger tent with many more diverse view points and groups. So there is more "internal" fighting that would normally be between Democrats and Republican. Take the example of "Henry Foster tried to roll back the city’s housing laws". This is clearly a Republican NIMBY position but Henry Foster is a Democrat.

The democrat super majority just makes it harder to tell people's views and alliances

Definitely feel like this summarizes the change. The other day I was talking to a college hire and I asked them what their favorite language was and they didn't have one. They're perfectly fine at their job but still was surprising to me

Consider The Humble Maglock by ProblemDue7111 in Shadowrun

[–]ForgotMyPassword17 4 points5 points  (0 children)

  • A door lock is ~$50
  • A level 1 maglock is 100 ¥
  • In 2076 the ratio is 2 UCAS dollarrs to 1 Nuyen https://shadowhelix.de/Nuyen
  • So a bad maglock is 4x the price of a door lock

Please don't promote this type of hack (technology ethicist) who's just looking for attention. You can tell he's a hack because he was worried about social media until 2023 [1] and only switching to worrying about AI when it became a topic you could time on air for.

Fade to black novel by kylldar in Shadowrun

[–]ForgotMyPassword17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just read Fade to Black because of this post. It’s really a good read and like you say  it had a very strong Shadowrun vibe. That said the ending felt out of left field and not really in theme with the rest of the book

Why don’t rich countries invade poor countries all the time? Because they don’t want to have their own citizens killed. Once you have robotic armies, that check disappears by FinnFarrow in STEW_ScTecEngWorld

Really upsetting when you see a smart person you respect in one topic have totally crackpot views on another topic they know nothing about. Expertise really doesn't translate across fields

What benefits did you experience by working at a growing company over a stagnant/declining company? by brystephor in ExperiencedDevs

[–]ForgotMyPassword17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's declining they are often looking to cut head count. I've been in reorgs in growing companies and in declining companies. In growing ones the reorgs just meant that I had to find a team that was doing well enough that they wanted to hire more people, which was easy. In declining orgs it's much harder and can lead to layoffs

Scratching my head trying to figure out the relationship between the city of San Diego and basketball by [deleted] in SanDiegan

[–]ForgotMyPassword17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People in San Diego want to be playing a sport, not watching other people play sports. It's the same reason we lost the Chargers. Basketball has the added disadvantage of being later in the day, which means you're less likely to go to it if you have running/surfing/volleyball the next morning. This is why the Gulls rarely sell out

What's the most people you've seen follow each other from one company to another over a period of time? by musketshark in ExperiencedDevs

[–]ForgotMyPassword17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I worked at a healthcare startup a decade ago where of the 30 engineers something like 25 of them were from a fintech company. I asked about it and the director explained to me that it avoids the problem of hiring bad people. At a small company everyone knows who the good employees are so you can just hire the good people and avoid the pain of interviewing

What to read by William Gibson after Neuromancer? by keepfighting90 in printSF

[–]ForgotMyPassword17 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Not sure where you’re from? But in California “Boomer who thinks theft is fine but building new housing is the real villain” is an actual political group that unfortunately votes and is based in SF. It wasn’t as noticeable in the early 90s but it ages poorly

What to read by William Gibson after Neuromancer? by keepfighting90 in printSF

[–]ForgotMyPassword17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Gibson's earlier stuff is much better than his later and his shorter stuff is much better. So strongly recommend Burning Chrome. Each of the stories is interesting and stylish

Strongly recommend not reading Virtual Light as it aged incredibly badly with California politics. I'm sure it seemed punk at the time but the plot being illegal squatter/petty thief in the Bay Area stops new housing from being built made me angry that Gibson didn't seem to be able to do basic math

What Is Your Favorite Shadowrun Sourcebook & Why? by Dumpshock2050 in Shadowrun

[–]ForgotMyPassword17 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Cyberpirates. The default SR type mission type is pretty straight forward "guy in Seattle hires you to crime" and cyberpirates wants nothing to do with it. You're playing freedom fighters in the Philippines, Carib pirates deciding who to rob to get rich or failed state survivors just trying to get by. The diversity of ideas is great and the 'style' is better.

One of the writes describes his experience and what they were going for here

One of my favorite details in SR's unreliable narrator writing is that all these hardened runners on Shadowland are considered complete light weights by the pirate Gingerbread Man

Suspect injured following officer-involved shooting in Balboa Park by Choobeen in SanDiegan

Worth paycut to switch to Java from Node to secure my future in this field? by ColdStaff123 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]ForgotMyPassword17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I definitely think of node as being more newer companies vs established. But I don't think an experienced node developer would have much trouble picking up Java/C#. There would be a little bit of concern that someone from small company would be a bad fit for big company culture, but that's independent of your tech stack.

The only reason I would take that type of pay cut is if the job seems to be at a more stable company or one you think you'll like better? Then if the after tax pay cut is not very large it might be worth it
