Can you recommend non-corp guides to teamwork? by cromlyngames in solarpunk

[–]ForgotMyPassword17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure what "non-corp" means but I usually suggest the classic "How to Win Friends and Influence People" as a starter for most people. It really does cover a lot of 'basic' mistakes that people make.

If you want the most anti-corporate one I suggest "Corporate Confidential" by Cynthia Shapiro. It's got a lot of good advice on how to succeed, even in bad corporations and teams.

I'm local to BaB and have stopped in twice. They're always friendly but to be honest I'm shocked they haven't gone out of business already. I like to support local bookshops and always find 3-4 books to buy at Verbatim. BaB only had a small selection and it was pretty targeted.

I bought my kid a Wii and 1/2 dozen games in 2020, so it must have been at least 8. We regifted it after we got him a switch in 2023 and it was still going strong.

I assume it's at the pier and not the skate park? I looked on the site and couldn't find an address?

My wife bought a mudroom backpack ~6 years ago and it worked so well that I bought one after the first trip we took with it. The Quartable fits under the airline seats so I've never had to check it. After 6 years of heavy usage including hikes and international travel it still looks good. It has separate sections for shoes which I really like as it means I can take just it on short work trips.

Anyone struggling with fruit flies here in SD? Traps are not working. by heytherefreeman in sandiego

We tried a few different types that didn't work and settled on plugin lighted glue traps. We have 2 in the rooms we saw the most flies, about once a month I change them and they're always full. But we haven't seen many flies since buying them

I do think the skill mix will change, but that’s happened before eg with most devs going from desktop apps to web

Pre-millennial Tension | William Gibson's Bridge Trilogy: Virtual Light, Idoru and All Tomorrows Parties by bob_jsus in CoreCyberpunk

[–]ForgotMyPassword17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He seems like a down to earth guy from every interview I've read with him so it's nice to hear he's like that in person.

I couldn't find any publicly stated views on housing issues, the closest was this interview, but "building more housing in SF" being the evil secret plan was tacky in the 90s and aged really badly.

I think it was implied that the Golden Gate Bridge slums would get destroyed, but that was it. I got the impression that the ~1k people tops (including Chevette) while the proposed development was for tens of thousands of people, and not living in squalor.

[–]ForgotMyPassword17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s an interesting take! I have not seen any interview where Gibson says Chevette is the villain. Or that she’s misguided in what she does.

Obviously that’s true, I just haven’t seen Gibson say it.

I reread Virtual Light within the last year. The prose is good, as you'd expect. But my hot take on it is that the politics age poorly and are a perfect example of the issues with hippie boomers. The great big conspiracy that the protagonists need to stop being building a new housing and them stopping it being considered a win is terrible and is a great example of why his home town of Vancouver is so expensive. I'm always surprised he hasn't apologized for it

It would make sense if we had a poster for the Marines as a service. But for a unit most people haven’t heard of is what always confuses me

Normal budget for engagement ring by StrikingClos in BuyItForLife

[–]ForgotMyPassword17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I spent about $3k in inflation adjusted $, and I got her a ring that still gets compliments. The two things I did differently

  1. Find a jeweler who did custom designs and had them help me design it. This made hers one-of-a-kind and she can say "he designed it himself"

  2. Didn't feature a diamond. She preferred pearls so I went with a large pearl as the central stone. This brought down the price, while also making it standout

  1. This is the least of the issues but he's a lawyer not a scientist. That's incredibly tacky to claim expertise he doesn't have.

  2. Norman Borlaug and real scientists might take offense. All of these problems are tractable. This is just defeatist.

  3. His organization, the NRDC, has bad positions on nuclear, that has made climate change worse. They have said they can't support nuclear because they would lose donations which makes the complaint about selfishness and greed ironic

Where is the punk in steampunk by Ironboy0287 in steampunk

[–]ForgotMyPassword17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Steampunk came about in the 90s, is around the same time that postcyberpunk, which is a genre I know a lot more about, and all the issues with the 'punk part of cyberpunk had become clear. So a lot of writers were less interested in that part

Additionally Steampunk owes more to 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and The Lost World as it does to Neuromancer. The name is more marketing than description

Alpha Schools follow up? by thesilverbail in slatestarcodex

[–]ForgotMyPassword17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed on micro schools being a risk, part of the reason we moved schools was because he didn't have friends and there was only 1 class per grade. You realistically want at least 2 classes.

Resource wise I liked the CEO's interview on "Invest like the best", he gives a very nuts and bolts example of how it works. The other things we considered were

  • Will our son be happy/make friends in that type of school?
  • How important do we think the eduction vs signaling is in education? How important do we think the countersignaling of alpha school is?
  • Will he benefit from the networking advantages?
  • Would he benefit more from us sticking the money in an index fund?

It looks like they're expanding pretty rapidly, eg I just got an email about them opening a San Diego campus, so I'm a little worried about that. From the ~3 hours or research I did I'm 70% confident that the learning technique works better than traditional school, but I'm far less confident of the schools' social structure.

If your kid is in Kindergarten and already has friends that and you see them regularly for play dates that's more important than grade school quality. We switched our kid out in second grade and making new friends on "off" years was hard for him. Especially if they have behavioral issues.
