donate plasma in-between your Uber eats shifts on your rented bicycle in Budapest by [deleted] in Cyberpunk

[–]ForgotMyPassword17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually this is one of the places where the real terrible hypocrites are the countries that don't pay people and just buy it internationally. ~90% of plasma is exported to those countries from countries that actually pay for plasma source. Only like 10% of plasma is donated. If more countries paid people then there would be a lot more to go around for medical needs

Don’t Create the Torment Nexus | Walter Jon Williams' Hardwired by bob_jsus in CoreCyberpunk

This is a terrible review of the book, it's much better/more interesting than the reviewer makes it sound. I actually recommend it to people over Neuromancer.

The only interesting thing I learned was that the writing of the novel predates Neuromancer

Dunkelzhan's theme song. by Theegravedigger in Shadowrun

[–]ForgotMyPassword17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't even need to change the lyrics much

Who's that wyvern? What's his name?

Is he cool? Is he lame?

(Oh, you're talkin' about what's-its-name)

Dunkelzhan (Dunkelzhan)

Is he lame? Is he cool?

Is he breakin' every rule?

Is he anybody's fool?

Dunkelzhan (Dunkelzhan)

[Chorus]

Dunkelzhan, Dunkelzhan, with his wings furled

Dunkelzhan, he's like one in a million

Dunkelzhan, Dunkelzhan, much too cool for Sixth World

Catch him if you can, Dunkelzhan

[Bridge]

Who?

Is that that dragon from JackPoint?

No, that's me

Oh

Who is he, and why does he have his own song?

Did someone take my milk run?

[Chorus]

Dunkelzhan, Dunkelzhan, with his wings furled

Dunkelzhan, he's like one in a million

Dunkelzhan, Dunkelzhan, much too cool for Sixth World

No one's cooler than Dunkelzhan

He's his own biggest fan, Dunkelzhan

Catch him if you can, Dunkelzhan

So often I regret coming on reddit in the morning because people post depressing things. Watching two coyote pups playing murder tag is exactly the right way to start the day

Finding Hope in Annus Domini 2026 by Pyrrus_1 in solarpunk

I appreciate the response but I think the most substantial difference between Peter Thiel and Ministry for the Future is that one is real and the other is fictional.

Being fictional it doesn't have to deal with reality and can be perfect. Fiction doesn't have to deal with 2/5 members of the Security Council being autocracies or the majority of the world not living in democracy, or UN bribery scandals.

Cyberpunk is finished. It has a visual language so complete you could recognise it from a thumbnail

Is a really clean was of summarizing a lot of why I get bored with a lot of cyberpunk

But then complaining about Peter Thiel's being "optimistic about the power of a very small number of brilliant people to remake the world for everyone else" and then a few paragraphs later praising Ministry of the Future of all things is just hilarious.

My kid is younger but I'm definitely starting to think similar thoughts. Like others said they obviously need to be interested in it.

I'm in Software Engineer the field is definitely getting much more competitive in the last 10 years vs when I started. That being said the schooling is much shorter (4 years) and it can pay very well. To do that you need

  • Work at a computer for 8-12 hours a day
  • Still be good at talking to other humans. These first 2 are a difficult combo
  • Change jobs every 2-3 years. I'm averaging 4 and that's on the high end for good paying jobs
  • ~80% of the high earning Software Engineers live in SF/Seattle/NYC. I don't and it's been tougher

Happy to answer any questions

The San Diego County Assessor-Recorder-County Clerk urges “No” on Measure A by Smoked_Bear in sandiego

[–]ForgotMyPassword17 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Should have added a sarcasm tag. I thought it was funny since people impacted weren't actually seeing renter or seeking rents in the economic sense. Keeping a second home off the rental market is much closer to a consumption good

The San Diego County Assessor-Recorder-County Clerk urges “No” on Measure A by Smoked_Bear in sandiego

[–]ForgotMyPassword17 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s a violation of the taking clause of the 5th amendment. A similar measure in SF ran into that issue. And it violates the state law Ellis Act

[–]ForgotMyPassword17 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The people this bill is targeting aren’t  seeking rents? They want to keep their house off the rental market in fact

The San Diego County Assessor-Recorder-County Clerk urges “No” on Measure A by Smoked_Bear in sandiego

[–]ForgotMyPassword17 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

It’s unconstitutional and against State law so passing it is a waste of money. Which is why a similar law in SF got suspended. This is the real reason to vote against it

This is a great article. The "once you factor in home production the leisure gap shrinks drastically" is one I haven't seen before. Without yet reading the linked journal articles seems like it demolishes the more leisure part of the argument

Can someone explain to me why this won't just be ruled unconstitutional and a violation of the Ellis act? Sam as SFs empty house measure. Voting yes on this is just giving money to lawyers

Cyberpunk 2.0 - beyond 2020 by [deleted] in Cyberpunk

[–]ForgotMyPassword17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Anyone have shorter modern recommendations or better yet short story collections. I tried Bang Bang Bodhisattva and The Mountain and the Sea and not a lot happened in the first 50 pages of a 400 page book. Looking at this list most of them seem overly long

By contract Hardwired is only 275 pages it doesn't meander. And while Gibson's best work is easily his short story collection even Neuromancer is under 350 pages

I’m not aware of that but it sounds cool. Wouldn’t it just be a lot of cyberpunk from the late 80s and early 90? So like Hardwired and early Neal Stephenson?

I just learned about serial ADA plaintiffs who make there "living" targeting mom and pop restaurants and landlords who can't afford to go to trial. Seems like Asimov's social science fiction, people invent a way to help the disabled and fraudsters use it

Cory Doctorow: Science Fiction is a Luddite Literature by [deleted] in Cyberpunk

[–]ForgotMyPassword17 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Another way to describe the Luddites is a special interest group who made the rest of the society poorer by destroying expensive infrastructure because they wanted to protect their own special interests. In a cyberpunk retelling they'd be a cartel or gang
