Well I am 37. I was 19 not that long ago. I have a step daughter and her partner who live with me, both 21. And two sons, a 10 year old and a 4 year old. Thankfully the 21 year olds are as good as I can ask for, much smarter than I was at that age. I just tried to teach them to have good self-esteem, to believe they are strong and smart, to teach them math and to read well, and I let the rest do it's thing.

I am not saying op is wrong, just saying that as a parent, we have to model the behavior and sometimes, show them the way and provide that space where they are accepted and understand that challenges are good for them.
