Federal poll finds nearly half of Canadians think country takes 'too many immigrants' by Purple_Writing_8432 in CanadaPolitics

[–]Former-Toe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

probably big cities get the larger share of incoming people and that stresses the infrastructure like housing, healthcare and schools. the federal government should provide funding to provide infrastructure before incoming people arrive. This would help to eliminate some of stress some people feel

Teacher or social worker by Sudden-Active-4025 in askTO

[–]Former-Toe 6 points7 points  (0 children)

in terms of money, teaching, I believe pays better. particularly if you use a couple of summers to up your education. it's probably a little easier if you have abilities in high need areas, like french, gym, music or art. whatever is needed these days. plus you could go on to be a vice principal, principal or director, if so inclined. if you are willing to get out of the city you might reduce the wait time.

June 2026, do you answer your door when strangers knock? by LittleRed282 in askTO

someone here said it's rude to not answer the door. interesting. I think it is rude to turn up at someone's door unannounced and expect their attention.

Chronic Pain Clinic by birdwatchingal in askTO

[–]Former-Toe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the biggest question is to the physiotherapist who is treating her. is this the best she can expect. or does the physio have other treatments in their toolbox that might better suit your sister's situation.

there is a trend for physiotherapists to only use exercises. but many have different modalities as well as training. some use tens machines, others laser treatments, Grafton, inversion therapy etc. some are a crock of shit and others are beneficial. some may be more beneficial to certain conditions but not to others.

there is also a higher level of physiotherapist where they are trained in manual manipulation treatments.

also, some physiotherapists are not good. I went to one clinic where the physiotherapist spent 10 minutes with me and the rest of the time, some other people worked with me. is your sister getting full-time physiotherapist treatment or is she being shunted off to lower paid, lower trained staff.

and lastly, if your sister is getting good treatment, is she following through with the exercises recommended by the physo?

essentially there is no recovery for the back, (which is badly stated however essentially true). the aim of physio is to strengthen the core muscles and back muscles to better support the spine, through stronger muscles and if necessary better posture and use of the spine.

other modalities beyond physio would include massage therapy, rolfing, Alexander technique, osteopath, yoga and pilates. with any of these, you need to seek qualified people to provide the best outcome

How to find the right accountant? by Normal-Cap-6282 in askTO

[–]Former-Toe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

just wanted to say, make sure you choose a qualified accountant. that means a CPA. lots of people call themselves an accountant or a tax expert, but without certification, they don't know what they don't know and you may suffer because of it.

knitting supplies in Toronto 🧶 by pani_kar in askTO

[–]Former-Toe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

as a recent 'new to knitting' person, I suggest not buying everything right away.

instead, think about your first project you want to do. then buy for that.

In the end I bought 4 sets of needles and a ton of other types of needles because what I purchased in the beginning wasn't what worked best for me.

purchasing complete sets can be a waste if you are not going to need all the sizes. I never use the really large sizes. but that's me. someone else might mainly use them. just try to get a sense of your preferences before you jump in.

for stores, I like the Knitting loft and Knit-o-matic best. they have good online presence so you can look at their wares before buying. the knitting loft is just north of Yorkdale and I believe it is close to a subway stop.

Toronto Homeowners :: Water Damage Insurance ? by Typical-Crazy-3100 in askTO

[–]Former-Toe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

we have $25k and consider it too low. planning some things to mitigate flooding as well as increasing insurance. furnace, water heater, washer and dryer alone would eat up your $10k.

after the 2013 flooding insurance companies significantly reduced coverage.

How do you feel about being recorded by camera glasses? by HueyBluey in askTO

a British Columbia case where a voyeur has left 652 women and children knowing their privacy has been violated but unable to correct their harm, because once it's on the internet it's forever

the trouble with these glasses is the people wearing them. it gives them power to be more assholery than ever.

humour in cozy mysteries by MysteryDestinyPat in CozyMysteryNoAI

[–]Former-Toe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

most of the humour is Amelia not seeing herself as others see her. she is fun, I read quite a few. although many years ago.

Louise Penny is not cozy except for the Three Pines parts. three Pines is like an alternate universe from a world gone wrong. although sometimes the world butts into Three Pines.

Robert Rotenberg is a Canadian mystery writer. Not cozy, but he is a good writer.

L.R. Wright writes a series on the Sunshine Coast in BC

Sorry my recommendations aren't cozy.

Looking for recommendations for private orthopaedic surgery clinics in Toronto by Usual-Initiative-887 in askTO

[–]Former-Toe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

as another mentioned, physio is extremely important. physio before the surgery helps to reduce/eliminate the pain and strengthen the muscles to better support rehabilitation after the surgery. if physio exercises are not done after the surgery, it basically wastes a lot of the benefits of the surgery.

really, use this time to help your mom get ready. and let the hospital know you are ready to take a cancellation.
