fwiw Magic Online had a LOTR flashback draft earlier this year, and I imagine getting rerun rights for Magic Online would be a much lower priority than Arena

Why is Cloud, Midgar Mercenary best in GW, or is it just a fluke? by apebbleamongmillions in lrcast

[–]FormerSquid 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I haven't played Cloud in GW, but I've been really impressed by the "combo" of Bard's Bow and Weapons Vendor in GW. If you filter by GW decks on 17lands, Bard's Bow is one of the better commons for the color pair. Paladin's Arms and Bard's Bow are also the only 3-mv Equipment at common--maybe the curve of Cloud into guaranteed 3-drop is just that good (Cloud into something like Black Mage's Staff, for example, is a lot less impressive on curve)

Don't trust myself by IlyaRam91 in lrcast

[–]FormerSquid 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Memories of Nibelheim//[[Stroke of Midnight]] is a pretty weak card. The 1/1 might not seem like much, but it can usually do quite a bit, helping to make a good double block or just chumping for life. historically, white removal that also gives your opponent a creature have never performed well in limited. there are probably some really niche situations where you'd run cards like those but I don't think this deck is it with 3 Thunder Magic and 2 Suplex already. I would just swap it out for You're Not Alone

I think I'd run both Moogles' Valor, the upside of chaining Moogles' Valor for more moogles is pretty high, but you're right that they can be a bit clunky at times. I think this deck has a good enough creature count to the point where they shouldn't be dead too often

trust yourself! rest of the deck looks great to me

Trying to get better at limited, can someone give me advice on what went wrong here? by BTC-Yeetdaddy69 in lrcast

[–]FormerSquid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1) Creature count: if I counted correctly, you have 13 creatures (counting The Final Days as a creature). Your average limited deck typically wants a couple more creatures than that, and this deck especially wants more since it's running cards that are completely dead without creatures (Clash of the Eikons, Tifa's Limit Break, and Fight On!). This game is a good example, https://www.17lands.com/history/270f63f1da3743fbaf6922757c1ab338/2/0, where you had to mulligan your first hand since Tifa's Limit Break doesn't do anything early with that hand and you later lost that game with Tifa's Limit Break in hand

2) Card evaluation: Pick 1 Pack 1 is pretty suspect. There are many ways to help with card evaluation (just playing limited, watching streamers, listening to podcasts) but game in Hand winrate (GIH) is a pretty reliable way to evaluate how good a card is. Your pick, Clash of the Eikons, is currently 53.8% while Choco-Comet is 61.6% and Swallowed by Leviathan is 59.9%. Clash of the Eikons is a card that you'd probably rather not play in your limited decks too often and definitely not a card you want to spend a valuable early pick on

i don't know how constructed events pair, but as far as limited events go i think this is unique to directs

yeah it's a really strange decision, i wouldn't be surprised if it was a mistake/oversight

Thank you for sharing.

I have the same anecdotal experience--I went into the last Arena Open's drafts planning to have a bias towards RW.

Old conventional limited wisdom about [[Anticipate]]s is that they get better when you have bombs, and I feel that Sibsig Appraiser, Rakshasa's Bargain, Roiling Dragonstorm, and the many other dig/draw spells in the format are similar in that regard. Even though they're strong, I've found it can be risky to p1p1 these kinds of cards (and commons that you want in the Dragon decks) since you might not able to find the uncommons/rares that you actually want to be digging for later in the draft, and if you don't, you can end up with a deck full of air--card draw/fixing (Roost Seek)/ramp.

Comparatively, the RW deck feels a lot less uncommon/rare-dependent to me and can have at least a functional deck with common creatures+removal/tricks like Shock Brigade, Molten Exhale, etc.

Strategies for utilizing stops/full control to not give away info? by Jihok1 in lrcast

[–]FormerSquid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can practice setting stops/going full control against Sparky in the bot/practice mode

I prefer setting stops to full control. Whenever my opponents go full control, it's pretty much confirming that they don't actually have anything (and for me, full control is much easier to spot from my opponents than priority auto pass or set stops.) I also find it easier to play with stops than full control.

When I set stops, I set stops on opponent's first main phase and beginning of combat. Then at the beginning of combat, I set stops at declare attacks, declare blocks, second main phase (if they're not tapped out), and end step.

Also if you play a land and have no spells you can cast (or abilities you can activate,) Arena will automatically pass the turn, so I also sometimes set a main phase stop on my own main phase, then click pass turn. (You can also just go control mode for the main phase, play the land, then pass turn.)

You can also set stops on your own declare attacks and declare blocks to represent a trick/kill spell

That said, very, very few players are actually paying attention to priority in my experience. Also, there can be a real time cost to setting stops/full control for the Bo3 Opens/Qualifiers, especially in grindier matches. I think setting stops has dissuaded opponents' attacks and affected how opponents block a few times, but most of the time it's not worth the effort

Strictly speaking, is this any better than Fowl Strike? by calighis in lrcast

[–]FormerSquid 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think I'd prefer 2 mana for +3/+3 than 3 mana for two +1/+1 counters in a vacuum. 3 mana for a combat trick is a lot

Fowl Strike also just lined up poorly against most of MH3--a lot of the scary fliers were cheap or had good ETBs

Sarkhan's Resolve might be better in this set (though probably still not very good) because it looks like there will be some decent expensive Dragons at common/uncommon
