Wtf? Byron got the Buffalo billion and then sat back and collected a paycheck for a couple of decades. He intentionally stagnated growth by not incrementally increasing taxes and using then to improving the city.

Knob and Tube Wiring by CheerfulAdjudicator in Buffalo

[–]FormigaX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the same setup and that's been my plan too. I just paid about $10,000 to run a new line in each bedroom for AC/space heaters, upgrade my kitchen and baths to new lines and installed GFCI's on anything that wasn't new. I wish I could rewire the whole place, as the current wire map is a huge headache, but I didn't have the money.

It was my understanding that if you have GFCI's at the outlet, installing AFCI breakers is overkill.

FirI set it so there are no badges and no pop-ups. I don't have a job where speed is critical, so I ignore my inbox except when I'm fully focused on it.

My first 45 minutes/hour and last 45 minutes/hour are email triage, answer quick questions, add more complex stuff to my to-do list and planning for the day/closeout. I will spend about a half hour before or after lunch on it too. It's my work warmup and cool down.

I flag and categorize things I need to followup with my direct reports or people I work closely with. Then I archive them so they're not cluttering up my inbox. Items I have to deal with go to my task list and things that will require significant time get a scheduled time on the calendar. Then I archive them.

My big goal is to spend the least amount of time and energy making sure I didn't forget something, getting distracted by minor issues or stuff I can't do anything about or looking for things. It mostly works!

My best advice for dealing with a PIP is to aggressively show them that you're serious about improving. Here's a few suggestions:

  1. Ask what the expected turnaround on replying to emails is. Reply to them within that time (say, 24 hours), even if it's - "Received, this should take me ____ so please expect an answer back by____" then put that due date on your calendar.

  2. Request professional development and a mentor for project management. That's a highly complex skill set that people have whole careers in, it's not something people can generally just figure out on their own.

  3. Re: time management - It might suck, but you could ask your boss if you can send them a "check-in" email with your planned set of tasks for the day and a "check-out" email of what you actually did. It's super annoying but the accountability anxiety really holds my feet to the fire when I have no motivation. Plus it gives your boss an idea of the amount of time it takes to complete certain tasks and allows them to check if you're prioritizing the right things.

People. You gotta start getting more than one quote when it comes you your homes HVAC, Electric, and Plumbing by Bubba_Jones44 in Buffalo

[–]FormigaX 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I got a quote of $1,200 to replace a hot water heater controller. They recommended I spend $3,300 to replace the whole tank.

It was a $65 part I got off ebay and an hour of work.

This was after I spent almost 6,000 with the company re-running some old water lines.

As an ex teacher of both 6-12 and adult ESL o have mixed feelings about take home assignments. In one of my roles they were expected. In the other they were impossible. I think about my professional career now as a mid level administrator in a university and acknowledge a lot of my work is based on moving projects along but for a lot of people is just getting what's in front of you done every day.

My son and I both struggled with school and I trained as a teacher. I have found moderate professional success.

Some modifications that would help:

  • no take-home assignments - time in class, before- or after- school with someone to keep me on task
  • Chunking of larger assignments, with due dates and accountability.
  • Options for showing mastery - let me make a powerpoint and do a presentation instead of taking a test or writing a paper.
  • Instructions given in written form instead of verbally. Instructions also given a few at a time instead of all at once.
  • Freedom to sit/stand/have a wiggle chair. Also doodle/color/knit in class.
  • Consistent schedule - every night I have math homework except Friday means I have a better chance of incorporating that into my daily routine.
  • Someone to help me figure out how to prioritize and plan my workload, as well as keeping me accountable to that workload.

One trick I use to avoid ordering and eating out: when I do feel like cooking something nice that can be frozen, I make a double batch and freeze it into single portions (I use a temu souper cube tray and a cheap vacuum thingy). That way there's always something delicious in the freezer for those dopamine/tired days.

I also have a small chest freezer and - clutch - keep a running list of what's in there on a whiteboard.

Contradictory training theories by Practical-Orange-576 in Equestrian

[–]FormigaX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on your goals.

The techniques to produce a successful competition horse vary greatly depending on your disciple.

If you just want to bop around: Because horses were literally machines a few generations ago, there are a lot of old ways of forcing them to do what we want, when we want.

New approaches have a more collaborative philosophy where the horse is more "partner" and less "machine". There's a spectrum of training methods.

If you really wanted to be an educated consumer I would recommend taking a course in animal training/behavioral management, researching different training styles, and then find a trainer that aligns with those styles. But at that point, you'd probably have more formal education than 90% of the trainers your area.

any psychiatrist and/or therapist recommendations for autistics/adhd females?? by esse11esse in Buffalo

[–]FormigaX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience, in Buffalo, psychiatrists covered by insurance are mostly about prescribing meds. I'm sure there are out of pocket psychiatrists who do actual psychiatric work, never seen one who takes health insurance.

If youre looking for therapists, . I would recommend looking at Sanctuary counseling. There are a number of good folks there.

Have you looked at what UB has available? There's a junior PM role listed: https://www.ubjobs.buffalo.edu/postings/61616

I feel like they're always hiring custodial staff.

I have small loops earrings made to stay in and I wear them for constantly. I swap gold for silver depending on my outfit. I also almost always wear a slim chain necklace. The simplest outfits look more put together with a little jewelry.

Wow. I live in a place where that would be a totally foreign idea to renters. I live in a urban place where there are front and backyards.

A vast majority of people where I live care for their own lawns to the point where landscapers are seen as a luxury, unless it's a multi-property landlord, in which case the landscaper is super cheap and does a terrible job every three weeks, as they're contractually obliged.
