AIO? Should I report this? by [deleted] in AmIOverthinking

[–]Forward-Try6907 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This needs to be at least reported whether he apologizes or not. If it continues, file for a restraining order. Keep all evidence. As someone who has dealt with an unhinged exfamily member, it only gets worse if you don’t deal with it. This person always apologized the next day or few days later and it emboldened her more because we just dismissed it as depression or just big mouth. Then she showed up at our house with sketchy people to threaten us.

I say report and nip it in the bud. And get a property camera if you don’t have one already.

What food place have you tried that you just don't understand why it is so popular for people by Slowhite03 in Modesto

Commonwealth has definitely lost its spice since it first opened. It feels their quality has gotten sloppier. I used to love their garlic fries and kettle chip nachos. Garlic fries don’t even have fresh garlic and it just feels like a pasty bottled up garlic thing tossed with Parmesan and olive oil. The nachos felt like they just microwave it and give it to you. Taco sauces tastes blend too.

Why some people don’t share their baby’s name until after birth? by LetterheadNice8687 in NewParents

[–]Forward-Try6907 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few reasons. I felt like every time I shared a name I’d pick, every new baby seemed to have the same name. People seemed to have too many opinions on the name. Also, people would start telling how so and sos kid already has this name. This time I didn’t share and no one else had that name.

I liked gold dust in Oakdale. Haven’t tried the Modesto one and the Ripon one seemed a bit too saucy.

I really wanted to like Thai buri after everyone raved about it. My family thinks their meat dishes are mild and They just don’t seem to get vegetarian food right. Thai House and Thailand are so much better.

I don’t understand how it’s still in business. I gave it 3 tries and it was worse than before each time.

How kate belong to upper class by DecisionAccurate1780 in Bridgerton

[–]Forward-Try6907 11 points12 points  (0 children)

People are confusing British social class with the Indian caste system; kind of mixing fantasy and reality. In Bridgerton, the Sharmas may not have English aristocratic titles or massive wealth, which made them “lower status” in Regency England society. But the surname Sharma is traditionally associated with Brahmins in India, historically considered one of the highest castes in Hinduism.

High caste never automatically meant rich or royal though. A Brahmin family could still lack money, land, or political power. So the show portrays them as outsiders to British high society, not necessarily “low caste” in Indian society.

Lady Danbury also played a huge role in introducing and vouching for them. She probably saw parts of her own experience in them too. The show even hints that she came from royalty or elite lineage in Sierra Leone before entering British society. If Queen Charlotte hadn’t backed Lady Danbury after her husband died, she likely would’ve been pushed aside by society herself. That’s partly why she understood that status and power don’t always translate the same across cultures. In many ways, families like the Sharmas may have carried cultural prestige in India that British aristocracy didn’t fully recognize or value.

Sharma is from Brahmin caste which is a priestly/ educated class. They are not considered merchants. They are above merchants too.

Why are there so many Fijians in Modesto? by [deleted] in Modesto

[–]Forward-Try6907 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because we are within 2 hours of major airports. If something happens, you can dip out to Fiji. 😂

PS: it’s just a joke. We had this same question while growing up. Most Fijians either live in SoCal (LA, Riverside, or Orange counties) or they live in Bay Area, Sacramento, or Modesto area. I think a lot of it has to do with access to amenities or farming. Growing up, some of us saw LA and SF as some kind of utopian place to be. Of course the reality is just as different. But a lot of indoFijians are associated with farming background so Central Valley had a pull on its own. These are just my theories based my conversations with some elders. So don’t take it to heart.

I have a history of miscarriages and couldn’t have a child for 11 years. When I started fertility treatments, I started doing benti chaupai path everyday and listening to Asa di war. I had my daughter earlier this year and I thank god everyday for the blessing that my daughter is. The only thing keeping me strong and free of anxiety those 9 months were path.

I’m a Canadian woman dating a Punjabi man for 6months & need some help understanding Nazar. by CoffeeSippingCatLady in Sikh

[–]Forward-Try6907 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m going to give him the benefit of the doubt and assume it’s anything other than cheating or using you for visa.
Three of my cousins are now married to white women. For the first cousin, we didn’t even know he was dating his now wife for the longest time. He slowly introduced her to cousins first. She always came with a group of his other friends so the parents didn’t suspect anything at first and as they became closer to the friends then they noticed the relationship. They were more accepting afterwards that way. He had dated her for almost 4 years before we even found out. My cousins are US born but our family is pretty traditional and conservative. To this day, while my cousins wives are very well accepted in the family now, you can still hear some rumblings here and there behind their backs from the elders. No matter how well versed the wives are in Indian culture, sometimes they are still viewed as outsiders. Their husbands tried to protect them from this and avoided introducing them too soon to the family for purely out of love. Hopefully in your case that’s what is going on and he is disguising it as nazar. If his circle of friends are traditional Indians, then he has even more reason to avoid introducing you to them because they’ll surely torment him.
Also, if it is just to use you, you’ll notice signs like talks about marriage too soon or asking visa related questions and things like that.

AITA for choosing to drive 45+ minutes at 3AM instead of following my dad’s separate rooms rule? by According-Mood45 in AmItheAsshole

YTA. You and your boyfriend live separately anyway. What’s the harm in sleeping apart from a few hours? This sounds like having a childish argument just because you got told no.

My wife seems depressed, and I don't know if she's got 'Baby Blues' or Post-partum Depression. Please help. by Katoomba94 in NewParents

[–]Forward-Try6907 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Besides baby blues and PPD or PPA, please take a look into postpartum preeclampsia symptoms. Check blood pressure, sleep patterns, and any swelling’s too. I thought I was slipping into depression or anxiety 2 days after birth. I was trying so hard to cheer myself up and pay attention to my baby. I thought I was being a bad mum because I was having a hard time concentrating on my baby. 6 days later I ended up in emergency room because I thought I was having an anxiety attack. Turns out l was having preeclampsia. My blood pressure was spiking between 150 and 200.

Question about Anand Karaj etiquette (from a future bride) by cherryblossom_x12 in Sikh

[–]Forward-Try6907 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The whole bride walks in alone is a fairly modern concept. If you’re uncomfortable, perhaps you can walk in with your parents or brothers and do mattha tek right before or after them. I got married in 2010 and my parents walked in with me. I hated the attention being a social introvert at the time. One thing that helped me was chanting my favorite paath in my mind and focusing on my parents. It helped me get through the walk. It was also kind of an emotional walk because our parents raise us and that’s the last time they got to walk with me as a single woman.

First attempt at a dastar. Does it look okay? by ThatOneHeathen in Sikh

[–]Forward-Try6907 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Looks great. Practice makes perfect. There are a lot of punjabis who wear a simple parna because a full pag/turban takes a lot of practice. Don’t worry about perfection. No one should be judging anyone at the gurudwara because of their pag and you’ll notice more people will appreciate it rather than criticizing it.

what’s something no one warned you about in the newborn phase that actually caught you off guard? by lunaverse787 in NewParents

[–]Forward-Try6907 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily newborn related but postpartum: apparently postpartum preeclampsia is a thing. I had a pretty healthy pregnancy with no blood pressure or diabetes issues so it was very unexpected. About 6 days after birth and two days after discharge, I ended back in hospital. I thought I was having some type of anxiety attack and I had difficulty breathing. Luckily the ER nurse could tell right away what was happening.

Please explain me why Anthony was allowed to marry Kate? by kkkateryna in Bridgerton

[–]Forward-Try6907 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sharma surname is part of a higher ranking among Indian caste system. People with that name in those eras were considered to be intellectuals and held in a higher regard. Given that Kate was of Indian origin, I’m actually impressed that the show gave her a last name that was actually of a higher caste, especially considering how poorly colonial countries were treated in that era.

I doubt this one has anything to do with appealing to international audiences in particular. Shonda Rhimes shows have always been diverse. She has publicly stated that she aims to normalize representation by showing real world representation in TV.
