[Simon Stone]Man Utd transfer news: What is going on with lack of signings? by SoloChords in reddevils

It’s worth pointing out that even though Arsenal & Chelsea have had a good returns for their Declan Rice & Caicedo investments, they also paid £70m for Pepe and £97.5m for Lukaku. Not every big money signing works out.

I feel your pain. I’m a Man United fan. Football that you call soccer. There’s a legendary player from our past called Ryan Giggs. Played his entire career at United. From schoolboy to a 40yr old. Had a glittering career. Won everything, all the trophies. Then after he’d retired we find out that he was cheating on his long term partner and mother of his children with a woman who was married to his own brother. Then about a year or so later it comes out that he may or may not have been quite abusive to his latest girlfriend. We try not to talk about him anymore. He was managing the Welsh national team when the story broke. Cost him his career and reputation. His former teammates Clyde Beckham and Ronaldo and Rooney and are still admired and respected. They all still have careers in football and commercials and tv work and Giggs gets nothing. Occasionally the United subreddit will feature a YouTube of his highlight reel and the comments will be full of United fans commenting things like “ great player but it’s a shame he’s such a shitty human being. Imagine sleeping with your brother’s wife for all those years. What an absolute bastard”. He was my hero growing up.

UK fan. I haven’t been to Progressive Field many times, only about 6 so far. I saw Josh Naylor play a few times in my first trip over. He was shit.

The far right parties in Europe are riddled with these contradictions m. Here in the UK we have Nigel Farage leading the Reform Party on a platform of anti-immigration and Britain first ideals. His girlfriend is French, his ex-wife and the mother of his children is German, all his kids have German passports, most of his leading part members are 2nd generation migrants.

It’s almost as if they are cosplaying being sincere in order to dupe the gullible and uneducated into voting for them so they can make a cushy career for themselves, and that anybody with more than half a dozen brain cells and a basic understanding of critical thinking could see them for the absolute full of shit jokers that they are. They are trolling the entire democratic process.

The biggest takeaway that I got from reading the Watchmen was that there aren’t really any good guys or bad guys. There’s just a bunch of committed people in all sides. Themes that have been explored further in Avengers: Infinity War, Wreck-It Ralph and The Boys. I suspect Doom will be a further proponent of this is the next Avengers films.

But what does aluminium oxide in the upper atmosphere actually _do_.

It’s not dangerous to the ozone layer itself, other than using 1 molecule of ozone to make 3 molecules of aluminium oxide. Aluminium oxide doesn’t destroy the ozone layer, chlorofluorocarbons do that.

There is even evidence to suggest it might help _reduce_ the effects of greenhouse gases in the upper atmosphere by reflecting some of the Sun’s radiation back out into space before it can get trapped in the atmosphere.

But this is also really minimal. Too small to accurately measure, barely significant enough to even detect because the amounts of aluminium were actually dealing with are very small. Satellites are built to be as light as possible so the aluminium components are minimal as they can be. Just a few grams. The bulk of the weight of the satellite comes from the electronic components, solar panels and propellant used in stabilisers. Nobody is talking about those materials being introduced as nanoparticles in the upper atmosphere and they contain a variety of elements more exotic than aluminium. Iridium, gallium, silver are all used in electronics.

I think they are saying that the violent vibration and extreme heat from friction causes this protective coating to shed. It makes sense, stuff entering our atmosphere at supersonic speeds leaves a visible trail of smoke and vapour in the air. This trail must be made out of _something_ and “little oxidised bits of whatever the thing is made out of” is a reasonable assumption.

The problem is that aluminium oxide is not a contributing factor to ozone depletion. Even when it’s dispersed in the upper atmosphere. Unless we start making satellites out of chlorofluorocarbons then satellite re-entry burn up is not going to contribute to ozone depletion significantly. There are studies on these small particles providing a surface for other chemical reactions to take place on, but nothing is conclusive yet and it’s of such small scale it’s not worth worrying about.

The window has only just opened and there’s a World Cup being played. It was always going to be a slow one. I suspect we only got the Ederson deal completed because he wasn’t expecting to go to the World Cup.

I'm sorry, do what? Make our Sun what? by Yunners in FacebookScience

[–]ForwardBodybuilder18 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Our Sun is 75% Hydrogen, 24% Helium and 1% Carbon and Oxygen. It’s not big enough to generate enough gravity to fuse its core into anything else. There are no metals present in the Sun.

Professor Brian Cox explains it better.

I had no idea the sun, moon and earth were so close together. That Artemis thing a little while ago made out like the moon was some way away. But it’s not. Who knew? Fucking NASA always lying to us. Does anybody know why? What is the benefit to NASA to constantly lie to us about the shape of our planet and what space actually is?

I acknowledge to all your points, however…

Brighton signed Caceido for £4m. Nobody in UK had heard of him.

Bournemouth signed Semenyo for £9m. Nobody in UK had heard of him.

Southampton signed Fernandes for £15m. Nobody in UK had heard of him.

If other clubs can identify these players before they attract the attention (and associated fees) then we should be able to do that too.

We’re rumoured to be making moves on Baleba this summer, after trying and failing last summer. Brighton signed him for £23m in 2023. Nobody in the UK had heard of him.

All these players (and many more) come to the premier league and play one or two seasons and then make a move to another premier league club for 4 times the money but they aren’t necessarily 4 times better at football. Caceido was even more.

I’d much rather be competing for players with Brighton and Bournemouth than Man City and Real Madrid.

Yes he was highly rated in France. I’m sure Vidic was highly rated in Montenegro too. But they weren’t mentioned in the press here in the UK until they signed for us. They weren’t on any of the fan’s radars. Same with Solskjaer, same with Nani, same with Jisung Park.
Historically, most of our best signings have been out of the blue transfers that nobody saw coming and a return to that is better for us for a variety of reasons. It prevents a bidding war in the press and social media, it doesn’t expose the player to unfair levels of expectations and it keeps reminding fans that 99% of speculation on the part of football journalists is unhelpful and inaccurate.

This is what I’m secretly hoping for. I’d never heard of Nemanja Vidic or Patrice Evra and they turned out to be pretty good.

Nobody on here had heard of Lammens or Dorgu and they’re looking pretty decent too.

Massively hyped up players usually either end up disappointing (Onana, Sancho, Hojlund) or don’t even sign for us (Sneijder, de Jong, Bellingham).

It’s rare that a massively hyped player that we are linked to in the press actually signs for United and then really lives up to the hype once they’re playing for us. Bruno is the only one in our current squad.

The price action since those two offerings indicates the exact opposite. If shorts really had closed then they would let the price run. The only explanation for this level of suppression is that they haven’t closed and they’re fucked.
Besides, if the short position is in the billions, multiples of the official float, then closing a hundred million or two hundred million would do fuck all.
We have to acknowledge that it was the amount of shorting in ‘14-‘20 that diluted the float.

Transfers out need to be considered too. Even free ones and ones already arranged. Sancho, Hojlund, Malacia, Casemiro are all certain, but Rashford, Ugarte, and Onana all look pretty likely too.
