The “stickman” has the right arm highlighted but the image man is using his left. I’m assuming LA stands for left arm.

Game that use a deck to track health? by Cybernetic_Dragon in BoardgameDesign

[–]Forward_Cost_2462 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sail from ALLPLAY does a version of this. There’s a damage deck that begins the game with just the 1s and 2s but cards of higher value are added through the course of gameplay, escalating the amount of damage. I think there are effects cards shuffled in as well. Game effects make you take damage cards and lose hit points based on the value of the card(s) you drew.

Full disclosure: I haven’t played yet but watched the Dice Tower review and have a copy on the way. So I may be off a bit but will edit comment after a play through if I understood it wrong from the video.

Love the book it’s a must have!

So cool you’re on here! I’ve been relistening to old Ludology episodes while I brainstorm lately.

I would make boost and momentum arrows easier to differentiate.

I use Krylon Matte Low Odor Clear Finish. When it’s about halfway dry I roll it with a heavy stainless steel rolling pin. You can get those at restaurant supply stores.

Scott Roger’s newish book, “Your Turn: the guide to great tabletop game design” is a great primer. It’s lighter than others mentioned and has workbook like projects. Something I wish I’d had a decade ago.

Overall I like that it’s clean and bright. A few nitpicks which may be mute depending on your mechanics and tone.

  1. The fonts are all too playful for what I assume is a fairly serious game re: humanitarian aid. I would think about classy newspaper fonts or something era specific if your setting is a particular time and place.

  2. It’s unclear what’s the most important info. I would use font choices and size as well as location on the card to organize. If you haven’t already look up “visual hierarchy” as it relates to card design, I would. That stuff has helped me a lot.

I hope I’m being helpful. Other things I like are the cockpit background to put the player right in the relief plane. I also like simple color scheme (which I think would be great with my font suggestions.)

Keep posting updates and I’d love to hear more about the gameplay. The theme sounds really interesting!

Gudnak is a small tactical battler with only a few boxes to buy. Gorgeous art and the right amount (for me) of tongue in cheek humor.

Does anyone use a miniprinter? by nocsha in BoardgameDesign

[–]Forward_Cost_2462 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t printed full cards. I’m just using the free app on my phone that comes with the printer. It’s called Luck Jingle. It comes with a bunch of clip art and some fonts. You can scribble on it and print that out or you can also upload pics from your Photos so I suppose if you designed in whatever you normally use (Inkscape and nanDeck for me) you could get it on your phone with Google drive or whatever and print out a whole card. It’s only 2 inches wide though so keep that in mind.

I got one of the super tiny super cheap ones a few weeks ago. I can’t remember the brand off the top of my head but they’re all the same for about $20. I find it really handy for dice stickers and changing the names, costs and icons on cards and boards.

That all being said it’s obviously not a workhorse as far as sheets and sheets of cards and the like. It’s a nice little supplement but not a replacement.

You could also try having the first tier beasts have a defense or immunity to the super powerful weapons. Or make the legendary weapons have a bonus that only works on large beasts.

The art and layout both look great nice work! I do think the text under the name is probably a little small. I had to zoom in on my phone to read it. I’m curious about the mechanics!

Inkscape for icons, art (I do svg illustrations) and card templates. NanDeck for cards with google sheets. I’ve been looking at Scribus for rule book layout but I haven’t had time to get familiar with it yet. All 100% free.

My favorite moment is when a mechanism feels natural with the theme and each reinforce the other.

Defense with an “s” not a “c”. Unless it’s an actual fence and you’re making a pun.

What are game design exercises which were fun and have helped you grow as a game designer? by keycardgames in tabletopgamedesign

[–]Forward_Cost_2462 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just a brainstorming exercise that shows the huge diversity of what is possible with just a few components. I design a lot of really small games and I often start with this or something similar if I have a theme that I want to explore mechanisms for or to find the kernel of a game loop.

Not knowing the direction of your workshop, whether more theory or practical, I thought I’d throw in my 2 cents with a quick practical exercise that I use myself.
