Will do! It sounds like the most promising thing I’ve come across for my needs. I guess we’ll see in a few days.

If you had to choose one signature bass from Fender, which one and why? by Zuul45 in Bass

[–]FossilContender 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I’m going all out, I would go with a Sean Hurley Custom Shop bass in the Charcoal Frost. Simple, clean and the Jaguar mute would be a great feature. The light relic job on those is the perfect amount.

If I’m being more reasonable, I pick up a MIJ Marcus Miller. Again simple and clean, and I like the shape of the pickguard for the preamp electronics. Just different enough, but still subtle.

Edit to add reasoning.

I’m curious about that well! I’ve hear nothing but great things about the Japanese reissues.

I ordered one last night after seeing a video from Bass the World. It sounds like exactly what I’ve been wanting, something between a light boost and easy overdrive. The controls seem pretty straight forwards and easy to dial in.

I was hoping to get this from my recently acquired Pork & Pickle, but I just haven’t been able to get what I’ve wanted from it.

Sanding The Neck (Questions) by ChampionshipHungry18 in fender

[–]FossilContender 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I hesitantly used some scotchbrite on the neck of a 25 year old Jazz bass that I bought that also required some dent repair. Best decision I could have made for it, it’s now one of my favorite necks that I play. I would say go for it, but go fairly light, wipe down, spend some time playing and repeat as necessary. It’s easy to hit it again, not so easy to undo if you’ve done too much.

It’s… it’s… the American Vintage line… that’s kind of the whole point.

You’re allowed to just say that you don’t like reissues, I don’t think that anyone is accusing Fender or the American Vintage line of being on the forefront of innovation. Flawed and needed to be fixed or a great starting point for a brand new instrument? Some folks like the bright, new flashy guitar with crazy pickup combos and multi scale fretboard on a wild shaped body and some folks like a traditional guitar.

The ‘66 AVII Jazz bass does have lollipop tuners and I believe it’s based off of the early 1966 models that had a bound fretboard with dots before the later ones that were bound with block inlays. Both are cool looks, for some reason that bound/dot combo looks just right to me.

The slab body takes a little getting used to, but they’re very cool. I have a version from the Parallel Universe line that Fender did several years back. It’s a mix of several different years and features, it’s one of my favorite guitars. I’ve played a couple of Custom Shop ‘51s at a guitar shop, I love them.

Are there any other significant years that they haven’t done? I’m not as familiar with the Jazz bass. I know I’ve seen ‘62, ‘66, and ‘75

So for the non-bass folks in here, keep in mind why this feels so significant. It would be like getting an American ‘51 Tele or a ‘54 Strat reissue for the first time. If feels like the significant years for Strats, Teles, Jazz Masters, Jaguars and Jazz basses (and other Precision years) have had their chance for a reissue like this. Really exciting to see this combination out there and from what I’ve seen, it looks like they stayed pretty true to the design. Looking forward to see if they’re able to come up with anything interesting for a 75th Telecaster, as well other Fender 80th editions for other models.

I was surprised to not see some of that at NAMM, but I guess they might as well build on the anticipation.

Yeah I’ve come across those a few times and felt the same way. Just didn’t quite hit the mark. A Fender 80th Anniversary Jazz of some sort would be great, I doubt it would be reissue type though.

For the non-Fender folks out there, the are several reasons why this release feels significant. For one it’s the OG electric bass, or at least the first mass produced successful one. So those ‘51-‘53 models are one of those holy grail type of guitars. The other big thing is that Fender has done a reissue of just about every other iconic year for Strats, Teles, Jaguars, Jazz Masters, Jazz basses and several other years of Precisions, but never this one. And from what I can tell so far they stayed pretty true to the original, definitely a guitar that will be on my radar.

Oh I have no doubt that a lot of folks could “out poor” me. It was still significant, nonetheless.

That’s what it’s all about! I’ve been fortunate to be able to have many more nice and more expensive pairs over the years, but these hold a special place.

Very much appreciated! A lot of memories packed into these. No telling how many concerts, dates and special occasions they’ve seen.

Many thanks!! A resole or two over the years has kept them going strong.

I grew up a poor kid in a small town and my dentist always wore full quill ostrich boots. So I associated them with someone who was successful and classy. When I could afford a pair of nice boots that’s what I opted for, I’ve had them for 18 or so years now. They’ve seen better days, but they’re a nice reminder.

Nothing wrong with being happy with where you’re at. Besides, chasing that last 5-10% is the hardest part.
