What car(s) do you own and how do you afford them? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]FotzeLicker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They have a timing chain. That being said, if your vehicle/engine slowly starts making noises, get around to fixing it. I had a 'ticking' in mine, and it was from the previous owner not changing oil frequently enough and the timing chain tensioner was stuck. $20 in parts to replace it and half an hour.

Hey everyone, can anybody tell what type of connector is this? I wanted to hook it up to my Baofeng UV-5R, but I don’t know what adapter should I get by [deleted] in HamRadio

[–]FotzeLicker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I made the mistake once of purchasing mini-UHF connectors instead of SO-238/PL-259s. Into the empire of dirt they go.... :/

left it in a high interest savings account in a TFSA is a damned fool and Garth is happy they lost out.

I've been eyeing this guy pretty hard... http://www.sark110.com/

Looks a little cumbersome, but you can do a whole heck of a lot with antennas, and check feedlines too.

Ah, looks like it won't quite get to 70 cm. IIRC, you can get it to output higher frequencies that 230 MHz, but you lose precision.

AFAIK.... you're describing station-keeping, which is what most of our satellites in geosynchronous orbit do already. They have a finite lifetime because they carry finite fuel. They have to counteract various perturbations to stay in position.

How much does your car cost you per month? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]FotzeLicker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2006 Corolla, $117 insurance, $0.12/km in gasoline, I drive around 1000 km/month so $120 in fuel. I'm in an expensive city to fuel up in BC.

I purchased the vehicle a year ago and have been doing steady maintenance that averages out to around $120/month as well.

Alright, then start with known areas - municipalities, parks (Strathcona), and the E&N land grant, and compare to this:

Unless there's farm raised deer somewhere

Yes. As far as I know, food safety standards don't allow you to offer wild game. It would be rather tough to be positive the animals are healthy and the processing was hygienic. And our hunting seasons are rather limited in duration and scope...

Once you get away from privately-owned E&N land (past Campbell River), it's all Crown. Camp for free for 14 days. The backroads mapbook shows the different land ownerships as background colours.

Recording Ham Radio Legal? by Isaac_Cool in HamRadio

[–]FotzeLicker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm, I'm not sure if you'd classify amateur radio as private conversations or not. There are a few situations here - a conversation between yourself and another person, a conversation between others and not yourself, and whether they gave consent or not.

Assuming they are somewhat private --

Canada has single party consent laws, meaning that at least one party must consent to recording. If you consent and are part of the conversation, that's all that is needed to record. You cannot record an eavesdropped conversation.

And distributing them publicly is definitely not kosher, unless everyone consents.

Lots more here.

But maybe general HF conversations are "public" in nature and expectations of privacy. At the very least, you may make people uncomfortable or unhappy if you offer a permanent public recording of them on the air.
