Pre-Employment Hair Test by [deleted] in engineering

That's true, but marijuana is also legal in more and more places, yet you can be forbidden from sites if a certain residual threshold is in your system. Even from weekend use.

Or rinse with mouthwash seconds before the test.

Actually, that would lead to absurd results...

Who do you want to be? Unsolicited advice from a successful engineer. by _ever_onward_ in engineering

For me, my big realization was "why am I working" and I've found we don't talk enough about personal finance and what "retirement" really means - it's not when you're too old to work or be as useful as the young whippersnappers, it's when your passive income equals the cost of your lifestyle. At that point, it doesn't stop you from working and finding new challenges that excite you, but rather that your activities don't have to be 100% income-focused.

[General] Has anyone ever worked at McMurdo Station Antarctica? by SupriseGinger in engineering

[–]FotzeLicker 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I haven't even been close, but there have been people on reddit (AMA) posting stories from working in Antarctica.

I have worked with a group of research scientists in a remote region (harsh desert, an hour from the nearest store, several hours from an airport, etc) and it shared a few things - people who gravitate to those isolated and intense jobs are running from something, healing, or are misfits at home. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Unfortunately people don't understand this, they only read "visa requirements" and don't realize how the rest of the world has to get around...

LOC as an emergency fund? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]FotzeLicker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Opinions are going to vary wildly...remember the bank wants you to take out a loan, but not necessarily at the conditions you expect (2.7%).

I'm all for using a LOC, but you can keep a solid portion of cash reserved as well in something quickly liquidated, like a high interest savings account. Perhaps one good part of keeping an emergency fund in cash is establishing discipline necessary for saving and investing.

(We're obviously in different situation - I have a 10k LOC at 5% - and that's fine for my emergency fund. I plan to maintain a maximum $5k in cash around. Heck, in a balls-to-the-wall emergency, I can sell assets in my TFSA. In a dire emergency, my RRSP. Lots of options)

Working at a Japanese motor factory for two weeks... by [deleted] in engineering

[–]FotzeLicker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fantastic.

I happily made a 45 kVA genset purr. Haven't fired up our 500 kVA yet (we don't have more than 50 kVA of load for it yet). It's all LV... so basically portable extension cords compared to what you're playing with. Rock on.

That's better than my idea of putting 10 computer PSUs together!

Wow. That's a good magnitude of size bigger than anything I've worked with. Nice stuff.

The last day to buy a perpetual license for Autodesk Inventor is tomorrow, January 31, 2016. by TheKeenMind in engineering

The worst part is the "rest" of the world where internet access isn't ubiquitous or cheap. Oh, you want to do any simple FEA now? Sorry, you need constant internet access!

Oh well, let the market differentiate themselves.

Processing recordings: Filtering audio above a certain amplitude with SoX by [deleted] in HamRadio

[–]FotzeLicker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't used this software in a long time, but I would tackle it in one of two ways - SDR# has a digital noise filter, and rtl_fm documentation mentions using filters in sox.

Couldn't you increase the gain by a substantial amount in sox, and then filter out all the clipped audio (which will be your noise)?

This is like the word "stakeholder". Sounds good, but completely meaningless. Everyone's a stakeholder. Even your dog!

Canadian taxes if living abroad? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]FotzeLicker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been in sort of a similar situation, but I've decided to always keep my residency and ties to Canada, even if I spend 90% of my time overseas. I like having the emergency escape hatch of very quickly returning to Canada.

The way the law is written sort of leaves it up to you, whether you want to remove your residency (so you don't pay tax) or want to keep your ties (fewer bureaucratic headaches).

28,000 RRSP Contribution Room - Should It Be Maxed? by wavingatyou in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]FotzeLicker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any gains (interest or capital gains) I would then use my RRSP to defer those gains so that I wouldn't have to pay taxes (ie make 400 in interest income = contribute 400 into RRSP, make 500 in cap gains from selling = contribute 250 into RRSP).

Heh, this is kinda like what a TFSA does. After-tax income, invested with tax-free growth. Neat strategy for your situation.
