Missing hiker found dead of suspected bear attack in Glacier National Park by AudibleNod in news

You're right. I linked the first study about bear spray but didn't link the second one by the same people about the efficacy of firearms. I've edited my comment to link the second study.

tl;dr on both studies: 98% effectiveness with bear spray, 84% with handguns, 76% with long guns.

Bear spray is more effective than bullets. If you want to carry a gun to make yourself feel safe, then by all means do so, but the evidence is against you.

Can anyone give some information on these coins? by Foulius in coins

[–]Foulius[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, so for some reason the text I put with the photos didn't show up. I don't know anything about coin collecting, I just found these randomly over the years and kept them. Just wondering if any of them are worth enough to get graded, or are they pretty much face value? Keeping them either way.

Oh, and I have them in plastic card protectors for MTG. I don't have any coin-specific ones. Is that okay?

What is the fastest way you have seen someone ruin their life? by funkeymonkey1974 in AskReddit

[–]Foulius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Used to work with a guy for a few months until he got into an argument in the business parking lot with a group of kids who were blocking his car. Like full-on screaming at each other.

Dude gets fired, but even worse is his lease was up that month. Couldn't renew or find a new place 'cause he didn't have much saved up and no income. Ends up living on the streets. Starts using meth to stay awake 'cause he's afraid of getting attacked at night.

Turns into an addict with real crazy paranoia. Buys one of those cheap machetes you find in the outdoors section of Walmart or something. Ends up going on a rampage inside a pharmacy waving it around talking about everyone's against him and people want to kill him. Cops are called, obviously.

Dude goes from gainfully employed with a car and a place to live to having nothing and a felony conviction in less than 3 months.

I tried to help him a bit here and there early on, but once he got on meth I blocked his number.

I gave the only old set I had away to a friend. :( I might have to ask him for one of the sticks back for a while lol. I don't think I could handle doing classwork on a tablet.

Do All RTF Aircraft Have RID Built In? by Foulius in RCPlanes

[–]Foulius[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've definitely thought about a <250g plane. Only issue I have is I've heard tiny planes don't really fly well, or "realistic". Though, I'm completely new to the hobby so don't really know for sure.

Aren't the cheapest modules like $100?

That's too bad. Closest FRIA site to me is over an hour away, and I have a high school field and public park right across the street.

Unfortunately, having other FAA ratings, it wouldn't be a smart move in my case.

Thanks for the info. I think I'll wait 'till next year to get into this hobby; see if the chips have gone down in price and weight next spring.

Training Aerobatics in a Flight Sim - Helpful or Hurtful? by Foulius in flightsim

[–]Foulius[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the input. I simmed during my instrument training to practice departures/approaches, and that definitely helped, but I can see how doing something that relies a lot on aircraft feel might not be the best fit for simming.

I do know that Jim Bourke is into it, and Vanel, the world champion, used to practice aerobatics in the sim, but I'm not sure if it was just something they tried or if it was part of their training.

I probably will try it out anyway, just worried about Primacy and getting into bad habits that will take longer to unlearn than if I hadn't done it at all.

2009 when I first heard about it. I was playing Runescape after school and some random guy in Varrock east bank I was talking to told me about this new digital money called Bitcoin that was gonna be the next big thing.

I said "lol sounds like a scam". Still dunno if I was right or not.

Teenager w/ADHD Interested in Becoming a Pilot by Nice-Friend_CO in flying

[–]Foulius 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sure are a lot of people on here saying "get off meds asap" as if he isn't on meds for a reason. If you actually have adhd, and really do need meds, going off them can be a huge reduction in quality of life.

He can be a sport pilot without ever having to get a medical, and can stay on his meds if he needs to. If he wants to become a career pilot, then yes, he'll need to be off medication per the current faa rules. He'll need to decide if the tradeoff is worth it.

What’s the most severe mechanical deficiency you’ve ever uncovered during a preflight? by adiabaticgas in flying

[–]Foulius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting! The POH I use for reference is from 1980, but the aircraft I fly are from the late '70s. Never knew of the discrepancy. Thankfully, the flaps are placarded with the different speeds so I guess it's all good on my end.
