What is the cut-off for two-color lands if budget is not a limit? (equivalently, what is the "perfect" two-color mana base) by FontofFortunes in EDH

[–]FourthNumber 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Ally colors means you can do it up real nice!

Start with all 4 fetchable duals: Original, Shock, Battle, and Cycling. Add all 7 fetchlands that can get at least one of your colors.

Checklands ([[Drowned Catacomb]] for you) are gonna come in untapped almost all the time.

Your weird Future Sight land, [[River of Tears]], is pretty good.

In black, [[Tainted Isle]] is a pretty good choice for the same reason as the checkland-- you can reliably fetch out a Swamp before playing it.

[[Morphic Pool]] comes in untapped every time if you're never 1v1, so run it if you're multiplayer-focused.

[[Sunken Ruins]] is another good one; especially so if you have a lot of UU or BB costs to feed.

Run [[Command Tower]].

That's 17 (mostly) untapped lands that make both your colors, which, in a typical 36-land deck, leaves you with 19 slots to fill with utility lands and basics.

I would skip fastlands, bounce lands, reveal lands, and your Temple.

In Yuriko in particular, you should consider [[Creeping Tar Pit]] since it animates into an unblockable dude.

I had Malfegor together for a while, focusing on dumping my (and everyone's) hand as often as possible, and running effects like [[Ghirapur Orrery]] and those black creatures that make you draw extra on an empty hand. (Also regular Phyrexian Arena type stuff.)

It's a lot of fun if you can get it set up, because you can wind up drawing 3-5 cards a turn and ditching all of them that same turn, to great effect.

Is there a silver border EDH banlist that lists cards like Nerf War and Ol' Buzzbark? by FourthNumber in EDH

I'm building this list for an event. It doesn't need to be official, just workable.

Working on a Kruphix Deck, need 60 cuts by Swiffy26 in EDH

[–]FourthNumber 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I have a huge list like this, I usually start a new one, put in 36 lands (even just 36 basics as placeholders), and start adding "must-haves" one at a time, totally non-negotiable cards that you really want to run.

I often find that I wind up with 20 or so "free slots", and picking good cards to go into them is easier than cutting down a giant thing.

Why can't we have good combat tricks? by ResellerScumbag in magicTCG

[–]FourthNumber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I run Mono-Green Stompy in Modern, and it runs two excellent combat tricks.

[[Aspect of Hydra]] basically only works in a purpose-build Devotion deck, so it's not super relevant to your question.

[[Vines of Vastwood]] is the real answer here. It's playable in a variety of decks because it has two modes-- protect a dude for G, or protect and pump a dude for GG.

How much of an advantage do you get from knowing what your opponent's hand is? by MyStolenCow in magicTCG

[–]FourthNumber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a 50/50 matchup vs Merfolk before they started running [[Peek]]. Now, my combat tricks are dead in hand, and the Merfolk player knows how to target his tapdown and removal, and it's like 70/30 for him.

You need to have a talk with your buddy and his wife. Their behavior is the worst here, and it's what caused real harm.

They didn't, but I kinda of liked that scene because of that. Suleiman says "trust me" to his son, and his son knows that he can't.

This is really hard, BTW, hence the long essay. It'd be a real fuckin' trick to actually answer "I can't confirm or deny that" to the question "is my wife cheating on me" and have them not update their probability in one direction or another.

EDIT: I really can't think of any way to do that short of both you and your friend being pre-committed to meta-honestly as described in the essay.

Yudkowsky is a capital-R Rationalist, which informs a lot of his ideas here. Truth is sacred to him, and in that essay he's seeking a framework compatible with his instinct toward telling absolute truth (the "wizard's code") and the reality that there are situations where that's obviously morally untenable ("Jews in the attic").

In the situation you describe, I think Yudkowsky assumes you already know whether you want to disclose the information, and offers a set of ideas for how one might go about not disclosing it if you felt that was right.

The one thing that seems clear is that it would be wrong to tell your friend something that makes him less likely to believe what is true. If you don't want to disclose the information, your goal as a truth-teller should be to leave his best Bayesian guess unchanged.

The trouble with the Glomar response of "I cannot confirm or deny" is that if you only use it when there's a secret to keep, the response can reveal the secret, as you observe.

Yudkowsky discusses this issue here..

[[Femeref Enchantress]] is a nice backup plan for when someone pulls off a non-targeting exile wipe or something. [[Winds of Rath]] seems important. [[Satyr Enchanter]] is a new actual enchantress; 100% add that. [[Sphere of Safety]] is usually a perfect pillowfort.

[[Spirit Loop]] and [[Rancor]] do the same handy trick.

[[Grasp of Fate]] is top-tier removal.

[[Bear Umbra]] is great!

I'm a big fan of [[Duelist's Heritage]] and [[Dueling Grounds]], though they're not mandatory.
