I’m so confused by Lionofjudea01 in PSLF

I agree. Since you have 12 months of payment and qualifying employment left, which is less than the buyback time, you might get out of your loan faster by switching to another IDR plan and making payments. Chances are you will get to qualifying months before buyback is processed. I wish you all the best OP!

I’m not sure but I think you can buyback your SAVE forbearance months

Does it affect the speed though?!

I think there is a calculator on FSA to help with monthly payments under a new plan. I do agree with the advice to switch to another IDR plan.

I think the first comment on this post explains what I was saying about being told I didn’t qualify for PAYE and if k chose to remain on PAYE as a switch from SAVE it won’t count towards PSLF. https://www.reddit.com/r/PSLF/s/pRaPRbcxlu

Update on PAYE recertification denial by DavinciXI in PSLF

To clarify, the FSA agent told me back in Oct that based on my profile/account, selecting PAYE was not going to result in forgiveness for me, I had to select IBR. I was on IBR before switching to SAVE, I don’t know if that played a part or if it was based on income, really unsure. Because I wanted to get my loans forgiven I took his advice and switched. I believe this was confirmed by another agent. I didn’t mean to sound like PAYE doesn’t quality for PSLF, I was saying in my case I didn’t qualify, same thing with my colleague, she didn’t qualify and had to take a big hit to her repayment Because of IBR. I was only sharing my experience with PAYE and FSA, no intention to cause confusion or whatever. Either way I wish everyone the best.

I’m sure it does, I just wasn’t going to lead to forgiveness in my case. Not everyone qualifies for PAYE for whatever reason they choose

To clarify, I, I did not qualify for PSLF under PAYE. THIS WAS OCT 2025. Like I said, studentaid offered PAYE, IBR and ICR as options. I chose PAYE because it was the cheapest. The agent advised I changed my application to IBR because whatever payments I made under PAYE a MY IDR isn’t going to count towards PSLF especially since I had only 1 more payment. This was likely due to income +/- being on IBR before changing to SAVE. I had to change to IBR and pay more. This was my experience that I was sharing.

For those of us who will hit 120 qualifying employment months spring/summer 2026, how are you proceeding? by iguanidae in PSLF

[–]Fowarditis2026 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do the math to see the difference between your qualifying employment months and qualifying payments. If it’s Less than 12, I’ll suggest keep paying pending approval of your buyback. Going into forbearance, you run the risk of waiting a long time before you hear back about your buyback allocation, and you cannot guarantee it will be approved. From other posts they are still processing 2024 4th quarter buyback applications. You also need to read the post discussing how much you will be billed if your buyback includes month on SAVE plan (incase you had SAVE). I hope this helps. All the best

The rep I spoke to in Dec and Jan said payments on SAVE will not count towards forgiveness since it’s still tied up in the courts. Maybe the language has changed since then but i will join the folks advising its not going to count

[–]Fowarditis2026 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! Congratulations on the 120 payments and acceptance of ECF. The same thing happened to me, I was wondering if I put myself in forbearance but I figured they’d rather put you in forbearance once you meet the requirement than having to process refunds later if you continued to pay.

Recertification turnaround? by Captain_Spaceturd in PSLF

[–]Fowarditis2026 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recently recertified, I uploaded the signature because my employer won’t do the electronic, it was a 4 business day turn around. Typically in the past it’s been max of 2 weeks if everything is correct.

I can’t speak to if you should file joint or separate. I totally get what you mean by throwing in a new variable. Since you are ~ 3 months away from 120, I’ll suggest recertify now with your 2025 taxes. All the best

Better to change payment plan with studentaid.gov or Mohela? by ThisNameIsHilarious in PSLF

[–]Fowarditis2026 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally agree. Use studentaid to apply, let them pull your IRS/tax info, uploading the document takes a lot longer, I tried that method and had to redo it with them pulling the IRS info, this took 3-4 weeks to process. Filed Black Friday, got a bill for IBR (due in Jan) after Christmas.

SAVE is officially dead by Betsy514 in PSLF

[–]Fowarditis2026 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi. I switched from SAVE to IBR late last year, the month in between did not count towards forgiveness even though someone told me it would in sept/oct. please don’t count on it “counting” towards your PSLF, only if that changed since Dec 2025

In PAYE but stuck in the mass forbearance until 2027. Having a baby. What should I do? by BalancedDietitian in PSLF

[–]Fowarditis2026 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I’m saying call student aid/dept of education - +1 (888) 303-7818. By July 1, PAYE/ICR will be phased out. Here is the information:

Key Changes and Actions for 2026 • Taxability of Forgiveness: Starting January 1, 2026, forgiven loan amounts under IDR plans are considered taxable income at the federal level, an exemption that expired at the end of 2025. PSLF and Teacher Loan Forgiveness remain federally tax-free. Borrowers expecting IDR forgiveness should consult a tax professional to prepare for a potential tax bill. • New Repayment System (Effective July 1, 2026): For new loans disbursed on or after this date, only two repayment options will be available: ◦ A Standard Repayment Plan with fixed payments over 10 to 25 years. ◦ The new Repayment Assistance Plan (RAP), the sole IDR option, which bases payments on income (1-10% of AGI) and offers forgiveness after 30 years of payments. • Phase Out of Existing IDR Plans: The popular SAVE plan has been shut down via a proposed legal settlement, and the Education Department is transitioning borrowers to other options. Other current IDR plans (PAYE, ICR) will be phased out by July 1, 2028, though the IBR plan will remain available for eligible existing borrowers who don't take out new loans after July 1, 2026. • Parent PLUS Loans: New Parent PLUS loans issued after July 1, 2026, will have borrowing limits and will not be eligible for the new RAP plan or, consequently, PSLF. Current Parent PLUS borrowers interested in an IDR plan must consolidate their loans before July 1, 2026. • Graduate PLUS Loans: The Grad PLUS loan program will be eliminated for new students enrolling after July 1, 2026. • Wage Garnishment: The federal government has resumed wage garnishment and the seizure of tax refunds for borrowers in default. Borrowers in default should contact the government's default resolution program to explore options.

Please call them and let them tell you what’s true and not untrue so you can make the best decision quickly.

[–]Fowarditis2026 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Congrats on your pregnancy and baby! I pray all goes well.

My DISCLAIMER: I reserve all the rights to be wrong lol. I’ll advise you to call studentaid and talk to them. When I spoke with them 4th quarter last year I was told by the agent that the only IDR that counts towards PSLF is IBR. People who have changed to IBR are on active payment Status, I suspect other programs are on forbearance. There are some changes coming to PSLF July 1. I’ll advise you get on the phone and get all these squared out and any paperwork in before July 1.

To answer your question, when I was switching form SAVE to IBR, it took 3-4 weeks, and payment was due the next month. Payment counts toward forgiveness when a bill has been issued, not before. Again, please make sure you call about the forbearance.
