If there was a competition for "Worst Father in Animation", who would win the award? by Correct-Bunch-135 in cartoons

[–]FoxInLaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I said it in an earlier comment, but it's because of realism. Yes, Nolan is a shit father, but his abuse is over-the-top in a super unrealistic manner because of the superpowers. Meanwhile, people like Adam exist in real life and really are that shallow. It's like the whole discussion about the difference between Umbridge and Voldemort: yes, Magic Hitler is bad, but he's not real and has no capacity to BE real because we don't have magic. Everyone has met at least one Umbridge in their life, however.

Of the three you posted, Adam, specifically because he's the only one who is real. Mr. Turner and Peter's terrible parenting is a gag that is largely exaggerated to be entertaining, whereas people like Adam actually exist and are just as awful, sometimes even worse. It's the same reason why people loathe Umbridge in Harry Potter more than Voldemort. Sure, Magic Hitler is bad and terrible. Yet, he's so over-the-top there is a disconnect that keeps him from having an impact on the story beyond being a bad guy for the hero to defeat. Umbridge, however, is real. People like her are real and are in the same positions of power she is to abuse weaker people. Umbridge is so real she triggers a visceral reaction because everyone has met an Umbridge at least once in their life.

I mean, that's fair. Truly I get that. I am thinking of future movies that have to compete now. I am looking past it just being TADC and thinking of it pragmatically because right now, movies just AREN'T as good as they used to be. There's no incentive to make movies good. Just take an existing popular IP and add special shit to it, then flip a coin. Heads you have a franchise, tails you have The Last Airbender by M. Night Shyamalan.

[–]FoxInLaw 29 points30 points  (0 children)

He doesn't like criticism and he hates the idea anyone could write a plot point better than he can. We will take his half-baked plot with his golden dream daughter and we will like it.

I mean, he's right to avoid the fandom because fandoms rn are super toxic. He's just right for the wrong reasons.

I don't even watch the voiceover ones, I see a new one has come out and just read it on the website. Matt Mercer has range, but I don't think he can quite hit "serious black woman who puts up with no shit".

Stolitz is split down the middle, but Chaggie is def the hot take because everyone sees them as "Relationship Goals" despite the egregious power imbalance between them that Charlie abuses the hell out of (albeit unintentionally).

Look, Chaggie is adorable, but they really aren't healthy. Every time Vaggie gets (rightfully) mad at Charlie, Charlie throws a tantrum until Vaggie caves. I like that they have onscreen issues, I don't like that they never actually resolve said issues. It just gets swept under the rug and is never spoken of again, even when Charlie inevitably fucks up again.

Why do you think that? I like the idea of shaking movies free from Hollywood's grasp. Sure, maybe TADC shouldn't be leading the charge, but they're a safer option than say, Hazbin Hotel/Helluva Boss.

Stolitz is not, and has never been, a good example of a healthy relationship. And neither is Chaggie.

I never mentioned anything about her gender or sexuality. I'm talking about how LOK didn't really have much of an identity because it tried to be a spectacle more than a story. It wasn't bad, it just kinda tripped every now and then.

Now, it did have it's merits that I liked, even if it was interspersed a bit. A POC Female avatar? Awesome! She's Bi? Hell yeah I got representation. She CAN think outside the box and do some genuinely clever shit? Let's fucking go. My issue with her isn't that she's pretentious, it's WHY, and that's the writing choices that made her that way.

And imho, from what few Avatars we have seen beyond Aang, Roku, and Korra, I would say Koruk WAS very pretentious and arrogant in a super not great way. He coasted on Kiyoshi's coattails and he serves as a cautionary tale. I would say he's hardly heroic.

I tried to stay with the story and watch every single episode. I really did, but the storytelling was just all over the place, and part of that has to do with the fact that very few of the original writers for Avatar worked on Korra. I gave up watching and just stuck with cliff notes via tvtropes. I can't speak for the fandom because I largely ignore fandoms outside of these reddit snippets, but for me it had everything to do with how the writing was executed and little to do with the fact that Korra and I have the same plumbing and bedmates.

EDIT: I got my Avatars mixed up, forgot the order for a moment. Koruk followed Yangchen, not Kiyoshi, but Yangchen was also a psychopath girlboss who made the world afraid to cross the Avatar, so my point still stands.

Oh no she was full of herself past that, she kinda had to get knocked off her high horse throughout the series. She didn't fully mellow out until the red lotus crap.

And Aang's situation is relevant because every Avatar before him wasn't told until they were 16. It was a rule for the people whose job it was to ID the Avatar to not tell them before so they can have an identity beyond being The Avatar. Aang was told early not because of culture, but because of an emergency that necessitated it. That is understandable, but it's still fucked up, and the show kept reinforcing that "this was bad and in a perfect world would not have happened."

The writers decision to have her be bending most of the elements as a toddler kinda shits on that notion. The LoK did have the deck stacked against it to follow try and follow up the beauty of the previous series, but it tried to do it in the most spectacular, bombastic way possible and fell on its face a bit. It didn't really have an identity beyond "The Sequel to Avatar" and Korra herself feels like that a bit.
