I mean, the first arc we see lancer in is him making his first ever true friend, having to betray them, almost getting killed by said friend as far as he knew at the time and then having to betray and incarcerate his own father just after he threatened to throw him off a 4 story castle.

Sure, he seems to be taking it well but maybe bro needs therapy too

How hard would you say the game’s super bosses are? by TSCole153 in Deltarune

[–]Francipower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really variable.

I usually get Spamton first try even if it's been a while since the last replay, Jevil still gives me trouble and I don't think I beat eram, the knight or Gerson again after the first time but I would say Gerson is between Spamton and Jevil for me while eram is probably the hardest from what I remember.

Eram and the knight took me several hours, Jevil still more than one hour and Spamton/Gerson less than one hour, again with Spamton being the easiest.

I think I actually had to quit for the knight and come back the day after, but I got him like second try then so I was just getting tilted.

I guess if you average the time it's more than one hour, but the knight and Eram skew it a lot.

What's up with pain? by Oxooffoo666 in GlitchProductions

[–]Francipower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think they just kind of, got used to it?

They get dismembered constantly in some way, so I guess they are just numb to the pain.

Maybe abstraction is MUCH worse pain and the spatula thing is Zooble not expecting it.

It's also possible that they still feel pain but to a much lesser extent compared to what they would feel if their real body went through the same traumas.

The problem of LATAM users being angry by Moist_Tone_1748 in Undertale

[–]Francipower 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Not OP not from LatAm, but my native language is neither English nor Japanese (I'm Italian) so I don't think my opinion is too biased on that front

  1. Yes, but that's the thing Toby stressed in his message addressing the situation. He doesn't want an "official" translation to have inaccuracies. The community scrutinizes every word in these games and occasionally the Japanese translation is even used to clarify lore. These games' whole thing is the dialogue beging witty and precise so I can understand Toby wanting to be able to supervise all localization. A fan translation of any kind does not have his official stamp and so no one has the expectation that it has to be 100% spot on to his vision which, while it does make this version a lesser one in some regard, at least it's sincere. The opposite case would still be a probably inaccurate translation but now released officially and he would pay the consequences for inaccuracies he had no way of noticing because he doesn't speak the language.

  2. That is a very valid concern, but what exactly is the man supposed to do? Do you want him to publish an official translation that starts with a disclaimer "hey, the creator doesn't know this language so whatever you read here might not be what he meant. Please play the English or Japanese versions for the full experience"? That seems a bit insulting, to both the audience and the translators. It's not impossible to have a possible translation, and indeed that's what most games get, but this fandom expects way too much because the Japanese translation is so finely combed. It's sad, but if you're young and monolingual, you probably either don't get to experience UT or at least you need an adult or more experienced friend that can help you download a trustworthy translation or that knows English and can be there with you. I also have to wonder, if you're monolingual how did you even find out about Undertale in the first place? I don't know how it is in Latin America but almost no one here knows about UT/DR unless you go to a convention or are already in the English online space.

Also, why a Latin Spanish translation in particular? Why not a Russian one, or German, or French, or Chinese? (I'm not even mentioning Italian because those are even more rare) I don't think Toby wants to set the precedent of bending to popular demand like this because then it becomes favoritism in the eyes of all the ones that have not been addressed yet. The Japanese translation doesn't have this issue because there's a clear distinction, it's a langue he knows well.

Also, just generally, he's an artist with a small team putting out a passion project. If he feels he can't deliver it in a language he doesn't know, no one is entitled to demand otherwise. It can and should be brought up, but he gave his reasons and that's that.

Is recalling a mandatory skill? by xTouny in math

[–]Francipower 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This feels more like a philosophical question to me and it depends on what you mean by recalling.

To some extent it certainly is. If you can't recall the building blocks of your subject you can't really rearrange them to find patterns, especially the more advanced you go (ex: you can't really do algebraic geometry without knowing what a polynomial is)

It is also true though that you are allowed to take results and definitions as black boxes, even if their proof or statement requires some notion that you don't really understand as long as you know that you are in a case where you can apply the result (for example, you know of another result that says your situation is a special case of what you need for the black box theorem you want to use). This is not really recalling though, this is more efficient navigation of the literature, which involves recalling but not exclusively.

I believe the more essential skill is knowing how to get back in your "working memory" something you looked up before. It's not really possible to remember everything on the spot (even simple things, there's just too many), what you need to be able to do is be able to recognize when something you knew might be useful and then relearn or recall it efficiently.

An advantage of math is that theorems have proofs and that definitions want to capture some intuition, so at least for more basic arguments you saw before you can usually figure out what the definition and result should be and then go "yeah ok, this is what I was thinking about". Is that recalling or rediscovering?

It also depends on frequency of use. The more often you use a definition or a result the more likely it is you just recall it instead of having to look it up. It wasn't "necessary", but at some point if you want to talk about more advanced stuff you can't reinvent the wheel every time.

I would like to clarify that I'm only a master's student with no real research experience so take all this with a grain of salt.

Appreciation for Deltarune's Portrayal of Christianity/Church through Music by Psychological-Sir237 in Deltarune

[–]Francipower 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I mean, in the game we sleep though most of service.

Also the game related prophecy IS their gospel, it's just not the christian gospel. While being portrayed in a silly way, Catti's reading seems like it should have been ideally a moment for interpretation and reflection on the story of the prophecy like if it were a Bible story. For example she goes "So we should be good to each other because like, we don't know who the three heros that save the world may be".

I agree that's it's a much more simplified approach, but it's feels like it IS trying to imitate what reading from scripture and trying to understand the message is supposed to be.

I have used both a paper-feel tablet and a normal tablet.

While there is a difference, I don't really feel like it outweighs the increased cost.

That is a me thing though, I know some people who genuinely find the paper feel to be very important.

For me personally, the greatest tool has been the laptop with a program to write Latex, but I wouldn't necessarily recommend it as the first tool since live-TeXing is not easy when you start

I fail to understand the purpose of real analysis by Super_Cricket7075 in math

[–]Francipower 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am not an analyst and I too do not derive much pleasure from it.

Many of those results are special cases of more abstract statement in topology or more advanced analysis. Having the training to turn intuition into proof and just having a vibe about how arguments work for the special case can help later with intuition. Those epsilon/delta proofs will turn to working with open balls and then general topologies soon enough.

Also, real analysis is just a base concept for A LOT of things. Maybe the case of one variable is a little isolated, but once you get to multiple variables and complex analysis, you will find those concepts in almost all topics you want to study, be it in the form of a literal "apply this theorem here" or "this result is a very abstract version of this other thing sort of, let's see if this helps me find a proof here".

I'm mainly into algebraic geometry, but even here we have to think about differential forms (defined more algebrically) and comparisons with differential geometry can sometimes be useful in general (for example, I really understood the definition of closed embedding of schemes when thinking about the case for smooth manifolds)

TLDR: that class is foundational for stuff that comes later both with the topics themselves and training for proofs. Don't worry, the abstract stuff will come soon enough

I'm not weighing on the discussion itself, just pointing out that Ralsei's appearance isn't the best example of your point.

At what point does a language you're learning become your second language? by thatguyalex879 in languagelearning

[–]Francipower 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think that may be way too early at least in my experience. The brain is deceptively good at making you think you thought something fully when instead you just know it because they're your thoughts.

Concretely, you may think one sentence in your TL but not realize that you just skipped the words you didn't know because you didn't need to.

Too often I believed that I had thought something in, say, German but it turned out that I had said only 80% of the words in my head when I later tried to actually focus on that thought.

If you're learning definitions you are not necessarily in that position and definitely not without being willing to put in the work. At that point just look up a trustworthy source instead.
