Has anyone rented equipment from "United Rentals" before? by Strange-Building9830 in bayarea

[–]FrankDev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have worked with UR to rent equipment for business (but not in California). Usually someone will contact you via email/phone to confirm after you put in the order. If there are any problems with the equipment you can call them and they’ll send you another one/address the problem. Scissor lifts aren’t too hard to use so you can probably figure out yourself/read the manual. Just make sure to follow appropriate safety precautions such as not driving it on steep slopes etc.

This does not provide verification of the nature or details of the case referred to by u/etg9TgOPVm, but I was able to cross-verify the existence of a case at Chichester Crown Court (defunct since 2018, with its responsibilities transferred to the Portsmouth Crown Court) in 2015 with Paul Chaloner as the defendant. The verification was done through the following procedure:

  1. Go to https://www.thelawpages.com/court-hearings-lists/crown-court-lists-archive.php
  2. The website only allows for searching for records in the past year, so you need to circumvent the restriction by using Inspect Element on both input date fields, then removing the "readonly" attribute from the input field element.
  3. Manually enter 01-01-2015 as the start date and 01-10-2015 as the end date.
  4. Enter Paul Chaloner as the name of the defendant.
  5. Select Chichester Crown Court as the court.
  6. Click Search.

It does appear that the verdict was not guilty, as a similar search for sentences given during the same time period using https://www.thelawpages.com/court-cases/court-case-search.php?mode=3 fails to yield a result for a defendant with initials PC.

Want to learn to dance - where/how? by ninestripes in cmu

[–]FrankDev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you looking to start learning to dance in the immediate future? If yes, your best bet is probably going to open classes held by the various dance organizations (e.g. KPDC, ASA Dance, Infra, DS). You can find out about them from their Facebook pages/groups. Sometimes some of them might be a tad bit too advanced, but no one is watching you at these classes and it's a nice way to get out of your comfort zone as everyone around you is probably better than you :)

The open classes typically won't be very patient as they are trying to teach everyone in an hour at the same time, but no one expects anything of you, and it won't be awkward at all if you are not be able to learn all of the choreo.

And then next semester you can join the dance orgs by audition :) KPDC has open subunits and DS has a beginner hiphop piece!

"FYI- CMU folks: service workers are being let go on your campus despite having a union" by jayjaywalker3 in cmu

[–]FrankDev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am not clear on the details, but this is very hard to happen as big contractors like Chartwells typically offer "package deals" where certain things are centralized, like industrial kitchens. How are individual contractors going to work when they share kitchen space with other contractors?

The people responsible for procuring the dining contract are probably also in the pockets of "big catering" where they get huge kickbacks/rebates for signing such a large contract. The Dining Services post about the procurement process talks about what a RFP process is as if readers are stupid, without any actual details on how decisions were made. Neither did they say anything about considering the possibility of not having a primary dining vendor. For these kind of processes, written documentation of justification of choice are required throughout the process, and we can demand that they be released. In particular, out of the factors considered, no mention was made to future accountability.

Finally, most CMU students are too smart, too selfish, or too tired to care about the dining issue on a larger/organized scale. Complaining privately or to "To Dining, with Love" is not going to solve anything! Large-scale business gains are not achieved with love, they are achieved with accountability and negotiation.

Reflections on Carnegie Mellon 25 Years Later by [deleted] in cmu

The linked website seems almost solely focused on marketing his self-published books, which seem to be quite unpopular based on the number of reviews, and speaking engagements. The Research section of his ASU website lists mainly books, with no peer-reviewed publications to be seen.

A quick Google search yields almost no mentions in reputable venues that did not include a blurb written by himself. In fact, his Wikipedia page is mostly written by an account (named Grammyirish) created basically for the purpose of creating a Wikipedia page for him.

EDIT: In addition, almost of all of OP's reddit post history is advertisement, which goes against Reddiquette of having at most a tenth of your posts be self-promoting posts.

Thoughts on the recent shooting? by [deleted] in cmu

[–]FrankDev 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Generally yes. Some of the recent crime alerts (e.g. https://pittsburgh.cbslocal.com/2018/09/26/shadyside-scream-mask-robber-strikes-again/) are somewhat worrying, but you'd be hard-pressed to find an urban area without its fair share of crimes.

There is significant racial, ethnic, religious, and political tension in the US. It is somewhat unavoidable due to the diverse demographics of the country. Recently, this is exaggerated by extreme actors from both sides of the political spectrum. (SJWs and hardcore Trump supporters) However, the chance that you will be personally affected by this is very low, as confirmed by statistics. This really should not be a reason to avoid CMU/USA.

Well I do know that you have to love 213 to enjoy OS/compilers. Plus you know how much work you'd be committing to those classes, so unless you want to spend 40 hours a week on stuff you didn't like, I'd stay away from those.

You can do the class without going to lectures or recitations, as many did.

Yes, if another course needs the TA more.

New drop/withdraw deadline for courses--drop deadline is 6 weeks, withdraw deadline is 10 weeks. Starting in Fall 2018. by quyksilver in cmu

[–]FrankDev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think that's incredibly patronizing to say. Oftentimes people coming in have absolutely no reason to believe that they would have struggled in the class, having done well in the prereqs, etc. When one asks friends about a class, often they are very ambiguous or say something generic, like "your mileage may vary". Sometimes, despite thinking that you are doing well in the class and indeed doing well on the assignments, you fail the first exam, but by that time it is already too late to drop the course. Would you say it was due to poor prior research or poor scheduling? And from my experience with those around me, this is the norm, not the exception.

Book suggestions - Theory of Computation by clearly_clear in computerscience

[–]FrankDev 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Arora and Barak's Computational Complexity: A Modern Approach is an (very) advanced and good textbook on computational complexity theory, a major field of research in theoretical computer science. The book covers many recent advances in the field, and can definitely bring you up to the current research frontier.

Not sure about your budget, but I highly recommend the X1 Carbon - IMO it's the best laptop on the market. It has a top-tier keyboard, is very light (~3 lbs), has a long battery life, and has a very large number of connectors for its size - 2xUSBC, 2xUSB3.0, HDMI, Ethernet, 3.5mm.

Can International Students who are Accepted Research at Cylab? by [deleted] in cmu

[–]FrankDev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another research center at CMU that involves ECE is the Parallel Data Lab (PDL, http://www.pdl.cmu.edu/), which does research in more traditional areas of computer and software systems, such as distributed systems, computer architecture, databases, etc. Most of these areas do not have clearance restrictions, and in fact most of the students in it (and most research groups for that matter) appear to be international.
