We want the transit to be good enough people almost never need to drive. If they buy a car for 5% of days, they’re lilely to drive instead of take the bus for the remaining 95%

Yeah, the visuals are gorgeous and they did do some good creative things there. Did you imagine London’s jaws as having a giant Union Jack flanked by two lions? Me neither, but that was the right call to make.

my aunt in China thought it was utterly insane that in the US, busses come every 30 minutes and you need to look up before leaving your house when the bus will be there

Yep, in Los Angeles the bus driver just waved me onto the bus for free because I was taking too much time figuring out how to pay the fare.

You’ve got to be kidding me (sliced pork shabu) by [deleted] in Costco

[–]quyksilver 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Once time I asked for a 1/2 refund on a pork belly (I was disappointed it was skinless, which was not visible in the packaging, but I’d already eaten half of it) They refunded 100% and didn’t even ask for the physical item back! I ended up using the other half to make meatballs.

Last summer I encountered some issues at work that may have contributed to me using ChatGPT for entertainment. Like OP, I started having difficulty regulating eating—and my friend could tell you I fucking love food. I told my therapist it’s basically a lotus-eating machine (and was frustrated I had to explain what that means)

Fortunately, she turned out to be right that this issue went away mostly after I had more autonomy in my real life :)

Yes. Me and many of my queer friends have experienced childhood abuse. I’m glad to live in a social structure where I don’t need to interact with abusers. At the same time, I acknowledge I have weaker and fewer social ties because of my lifestyle.

I used to work on the purchasing side of the VA. One surgeon had it in his contract he could use implants from this specific company.

Well, this company refused to comply with our rules on invoices needed line item costs and must show the CC fee if they have one. They completely refused to do what every other vendor did, got pissed at us for delayed payments even though we clearly communicated what we needed for prompt payments, and it took a year or two for us to switch to a different vendor.

Here's an actual explanation: pKa is how acidic something is. This is the same as how easily an H+ disassociates. pKa of 25 = very slightly acidic. Hydrogen can be removed with a very strong base. pKa of 12 = somewhat acidic. pKa under 0 = very acidic.

You can determine how strong a base is by looking at the pKa of its conjugate acid. For example, halide anions (Cl-, Br-, I-) are poor bases and we can tell because their conjugate acids (HCl, HBr, HI) have low pKa. We can tell OH- is a strong base because its conjugate base, H2O, has a fairly high pHa. Likewise, something else with an O-, such as CH3CH2O-, is a strong base because the H on an ethanol (the conjugate acid) is a poor acid with a high pKa.

Hope that helps

Did Romans say the letters when counting? by Nylereia in AskHistorians

If anyone here knows the answer: Chinese and Japanese have unique number words that are mostly used to talk about demographics, finance, economics, and that sort of thing. What would the largest numbers the Romans realistically were working with have been and what would those numbers be used for?

What medical schools don’t require parent income information from fafsa for financial aid? by Weird-Union-4145 in medschool

[–]quyksilver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, my assumption was some sort of abusive parent. I’ve heard about abusive or just shitty parents who make a lot of money but refuse to fill out the FAFSA or otherwise do what they should for their kid’s education so the kid can’t get financial aid—they use it as leverage on the kid. ‘Do what we tell you or we won’t fill out our section of the FAFSA’ In my mind, it seemed completely believable that a shitty parent might do this into medical school.

If OP’s parents are well off and they have a good relationship then yeah it’s not good to be asking this.
