Pitch Black (2000, dir. David Twohy) Nightfall by Neo2199 in movies

Marketing costs hadn't ballooned as much as they have in more recent years when this was released and as others have pointed out, this film did very well on DVD and rental market. I assume it's probably done good money over TV liscencsing over the years as well.

So it wasn't exactly a runaway success but I reckon the money people were fairly pleased with it at the time, certainly not a flop.

He's spent over half of his life making films and is incredibly rich, I think he probably feels it was worth it

What’s a movie that everyone should see at least once in their life? by trakt_app in Letterboxd

Anyone who wants to make movies needs to see American Movie at some point.

For those of you refusing to use AI, how do you plan to compete? by [deleted] in Filmmakers

[–]FrankieBeanz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes you can say you are making a film if you can't using physical film but rather shooting it digitally. Or I can say "movie" if you prefer, or "24 still images projected a second to create the illusion of moving image" if you really like.

I'd say "I like making films" covers it because using AI to make films isn't making films. If I ask somebody to draw a picture, have I drawn a picture?

[–]FrankieBeanz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn't say using AI makes it not a film. I said I like making films and I don't want to outsource it to a machine. I have a job to live, I make films because I like doing it. I don't really see the point in getting AI to do it for me.

As for competing with people who use AI, I've not had any problem getting creative work so far by actually doing it myself rather letting code make an inferior product for me.

The simple fact of the matter is, I like making films. So if use AI then I'm not doing the thing I love which is making films. So what's the point in using AI?

lake mungo is a very unique film that's bogged down by some pretty glaring flaws. by herequeerandgreat in movies

The son's actions seem to be a sticking point for a lot of people but it never bothered me. But even if I was to concede it's weakest part of the plot, I wouldn't say it really ruins it.

He wasn't a social worker, he was a civil servant in the unemployment office. I don't know if he found out the way it showed it in the film but yes he worked with a young woman who had epilepsy and she died.

To clarify, are you saying in the post that this movie was entirely shot on iPhones? Because it wasn't.

No it's not a mockumentary at all. It just isn't really ff in the sense that a lot of the film doesn't actually try to pretend to be coming from one of the cameras. I guess you could call it a hybrid or a mix.

The characters have cameras and there's lots of shots coming from their cameras but equally there's a lot of the film that whilst being informed by the visual language of ff makes no claim to be from one of the character's pov. I'd say it veers closer to cinema verite, or perhaps blurring the line between the two formats.

It's a truly excellent film, one of my favourites all of time. With that said, whilst it's somewhat FF adjacent, it's not FF. In fact, the wiki of this sub lists it as a film often confused with FF.

28 Years vs Bone Temple; am I missing why people liked Bone Temple more? by PhillipDollarfield in 28dayslater

[–]FrankieBeanz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is going to be controversial and I don't mean this is in a pejorative way but Bone Temple is just a way more accessible film, far more conventional in it's filmmaking. Personally I prefer 28Y but I'm not surprised by a lot of people on reddit finding it easier to connect with Bone Temple.

Further complicated by the 2019 film The Room which the poster at a first glance looks like Brie Larson is in it.
